Newsletter #1 Friday 10 January 2020 Dear Parents School is currently a hive of activity with much being done in preparation for the arrival of your children. We trust that we can facilitate a very smooth and happy start to the year. On this side, our planning is just filled with enthusiasm and happiness and our staff are genuinely excited at the prospect of this new year and all the opportunities it affords. We pray for God’s protection and provision on all school families this year. What a joy it will be to see our new pupils and parents on Tuesday and our ‘old’ ones on Wednesday! THREE STREAMS OF EDUCATION AT HATFIELD 1. Our campus school celebrates her 35 birthday this year and was a truly amazing initiative of the leaders of the Hatfield Christian Church. We are blessed to have served hundreds of families over this time. In 2020 we start with 763 pupils (ranging from Gr 000 – Gr 12) 2. The Online School has been going for 10 years and has a number of different avenues of expression. This year we have approximately 400 students enrolled from Gr 8 to Gr 12. We are in partnership in this venture with Accelerated Education Enterprises (AEE) and are able to serve pupils from smaller Christian Schools. We welcome Ms Claudine van Tonder as the new Principal of this school this year 3. The Hatfield Christian Online Campus School (which became known as “The Hive”) was successfully launched in 2019 to meet the demand identified in our campus students for individualised education. These students follow the current Hatfield IEB online system on individual laptops in a separate venue where each student can work at his/her own pace. Academic support and study skills are offered as part of the academic programme. We only accept a small group of HS students onto this programme and there are particular criteria for a pupil to be accepted and cost implications. Mrs Emily Malan leads this ministry. MATRIC RESULTS 2019 The true test of excellence and commitment is in consistency. This year’s Matric results are certainly consistent with the pattern over the last decade. Hidden within the following statistics are thousands of hours of collective hard work, tears and prayers on the part of pupils, parents and teachers. We are delighted with the excellent results achieved by the 2019 Matrics, and particularly proud of those pupils who persevered through all kinds of challenges and managed to do better than expected. Please know that both our teaching and administrative staff are here; wanting to help and ensure a good introduction for you. • To parents, new and old, feel free to call or e-mail as often as you need questions answered. At the back of the school diary you will find specific e-mail addresses of staff members or alternatively you are always assured of getting a prompt reply from Debbie at admin@hatfieldcs.co.za. • Pauline, our school receptionist feels like an old friend to families who have been with us for a while and I know that new parents and pupils will find her most approachable. She is always a good starting point when in doubt about anything. • Also, remember to consult your FAQ booklet for parents when in doubt. If you don’t have one or have mislaid yours, Teresa at our Admissions Office, will gladly assist you. • You will receive an electronic copy of a newsletter from us each Friday. (They won’t all be as long as this one, I promise. Starting a new school year just requires a lot of information and our style is to over communicate rather than to under communicate.) Please mail us if you have not received a newsletter from us on a Friday. I urge you to read them diligently and thereby keep abreast of all school happenings. A very comprehensive letter went out with reports last year (and was e-mailed to new parents) which has a lot of important information for this year. If you have mislaid yours, please mail admin@hatfieldcs.co.za. • Each pupil will receive a diary on the first day of school. The diary is central in the effective running and management of our school. If in doubt about anything, you may like to consult the diary first. We do have a few available at reception for parents to purchase should you want a copy of your own. Please browse through the diary, in particular the beginning pages. Much of what you need to know is in there. (On receipt of the diary, please have a quick look at it and return any faulty copy to the school reception by Monday 20 January.) • Please to subscribe to D6 and select your channels for the year. Should you have any challenges with this, please mail Mr Dollenberg at ddollenber@hatfieldcs.co.za. He will also be available to assist with this at the General Parents Evening. • The Ed-Admin Parent Portal is helpful. Please mail dpotgieter@hatfieldcs.co.za if you need assistance with this. • We understand that there are WhatsApp groups that are created but these are not ideal platforms for communication. Staff prefer an e-mail query rather than public WhatsApp queries. HATFIELD CHRISTIAN SCHOOL • TRAINING LEADERS TO SERVE NATIONS • 012 361 1182 • WWW.HATFIELDCS.CO.ZA • ADMIN@HATFIELDCS.CO.ZA
At Hatfield we place a high priority on communication and keeping you well informed. However, we easily forget what it is like to be new in an organization. Please feel free to let us know if there is anything that we could have done or told you that would have made your transition smoother. Gather your thoughts over this next season and drop Debbie Holloway an e-mail at admin@hatfieldcs.co.za. REGULAR BEGINNING OF THE YEAR REMINDERS • School Times: School will start promptly at 07:30 for all pupils from Gr 0 - 12. Gr 000 & 00 may be dropped off any time between 07:30 and 08:00 but not after 08:00 as the programme starts at that time. Herewith the finishing times: GRADE FINISHING TIME Grade 000 – 0 12h30 Grade 1 – 2 13h00 Grade 3 13h10 Grade 4 – 6 13h22 - Monday 13h45 - Tues to Thurs 13h24 - Fri Grade 7 – 12 14h00 - Monday 13h45 - Tues to Thurs 13h24 - Fri (Gr 7 – 9) 14h00 - Fri (Gr 10 – 12) –– Please note that there has been a change to the Friday timetable and this has affected finishing times on a Friday. This has been necessitated by an increased demand from the IEB on senior students in one particular subject. We are sorry to lengthen the day of Gr 10 – 12 pupils on a Friday but couldn’t do it any other day because of sports practices and matches. –– Gr 7 & 8 pupils requiring assistance with Science Expo projects are to come and see staff between 13:30 and 14:00 on Fridays. • Please note that Gr 0 – 3 pupils are supervised on the playground until 13:45 thereafter they automatically go to aftercare and parents are then billed accordingly. • In the mornings, we have staff on the playground from 07:00. We cannot take responsibility for pupils dropped earlier than this. (Gr 00 and 000 not earlier than 07:10) • Whilst we have enormous respect for the God given mandate of parents, we do ask that you assist us by adhering to some boundaries. –– Please never walk in to a teacher’s classroom or disrupt a lesson. Their focus must be undivided and must be on the pupils in their care. Teachers may not stop their teaching for a quick word with a parent. –– We request that you don’t wait in the corridor for teachers during break times or after school. They are often rushing for a quick cup of tea or going to an extra-mural activity. –– Please don’t gather for conversations outside a teacher’s door. We request that you do this in the JP Playground or elsewhere while waiting for children. Staff are more than willing to see you and indeed we encourage these interactions. However, I do request that you arrange a more formal meeting time with them. • Car park: We urge parents to exercise extreme caution when driving on our property. In the mornings, please follow the instructions of our staff. • Parents are regularly asked to notify the school of any interventions that your child has received (therapy, counselling etc.) and any strong medication that your child may be taking. Please complete the attached form and return it school by Tues 21 Jan. We will send a hard copy as well. For this form, we require 100% return (even if yours is a nil return.) Pre-school teachers enjoying holiday visits in the children's home With all that being said…. May this be a year of God’s blessing and favour on the school. Our prayer is that we would be trustworthy and effective in the task that He has called us for.
