GIPPY LEAGUE INSIDER FOOTBALL REVIEW – Round 4 It was astonishing what happened at Bairnsdale City Oval last weekend when the Maroons travelled to meet a Red Legs side that sat above them on the Gippsland League ladder. 40 minutes into the match Bairnsdale had only registered a single behind and truth be told had barely got the ball past half way while Traralgon were sitting with 10 goals to their name. The Maroons were in their best form of the year and were transitioning the ball with ease. A single Ricky Tatnell goal on the half time siren pulled the margin back to 61 at half time after Traralgon dominated the first two quarters. Their nine behinds included some set shot misses they would pencil in including a Daniel Reid miss from the top of the goal square. The TRFM commentary team put what they refer to in the industry as the ‘mozz’ on Nick Lowden who also sent a Kristian Jaksch kicked another 4 goals and now sits well clear on top of the set shot out on the full in the second term after a Daryl Couling Lawless Award charts pump up. Lowden was causing all sorts of issues up forward Isaac Abas was back for the Tigers after his one week suspension while Dunbar, McMahon and Jacobsen were barely letting the while the Parrots were missing 2019 MVP Chris Verboon who was ball into Bairnsdale’s attacking third. Corey Timms was battling hard across half back but Maskell over the back and within two minutes of playing time winners were too and far between for them. The Third term was there were two goals on the board. Leongatha kicked the next all Traralgon and 7 unanswered goals were pilled on. Jake Best through Tim Sauravin who picked up a scrappy ball at the top kicked 3 and had no less than 5 shots including a point blank of the goal square and snapped over his left shoulder to put the miss when looking at his fourth goal of the term. 108 points was Parrots in front. Maskell failed to capitalise on a chance to kick the lead for Traralgon as the three quarter time siren sounded. his second at the 10 minute mark after Jake Van Der Plight broke Best shrugged off a defender and snapped his sixth goal to through and hit the forward up with a precise left foot dart. The start the final term which put the Maroons 114 points up early in footy was all flowing Leongatha’s way with the ball being locked the final term. Bairnsdale managed to do something they hadn’t in their half. Tom Marriott’s set shot at the 12 minute mark faded done all game and quickly reply with Link Robinson kicking their right with Leongatha failing to fully put their early dominance second goal of the match with a left foot snap. 7 minutes into on the scoreboard. Maskell was causing trouble for Max Linton the last and Best’s 7th goal brought up a game high 115 point after he outstretched to take another mark he was infringed in margin and the Traralgon coach subsequently jogged off the the entry gate side pocket. He missed the shot but it proved a ground for a well earned rest. In what was purely academic after dress rehearsal of sorts as the former Interleague captain nailed that McCarrey got one back and Ethan East also popped up for his second goal from that pocket only minutes later to give a couple to give Bairnsdale something going into next week. Leongatha a 15-point lead. Every foray forward for the Tigers Jake Best finished with which he would have ideally thought was swiftly dealt with and at the 20 minute mark Ginnane took an should have been 10 with some close misses. Traralgon looked far uncontested grab and added to lead which now sat at 23 points. too quick in both leg speed and decision making. The rare times Taylor Weathrill tried to take on Luke Bowman in a dangerous spot Bairnsdale had some possession they turned the ball over by foot of the ground, Bowman slammed him into the ground winning a on several occasions. In the end Bairnsdale did well to drag this free kick but joined the growing list of Parrots stars that missed back under three figures as it was a pure dominant display from gettable set shots. The Tigers best bit of play for the term ended Traralgon for the majority of the afternoon. Matt Northe finished in disappointment as a free flowing chain of marks and spot up with 49 touches taking full control over the ball he and Collison kicks ended in the final inside 50 spotting up Nick Nagle who had had bought to the game. GIPPY LEAGUE INSIDER after Ben Willis spiked a loose ball towards goal and Nick Nagel swung his boot through the bouncing ball to kick Leongatha’s sixth of the afternoon. Tim Sauravin really should have nailed his second missing a set shot from around 30 metres out which would have taken the margin to 42 points. This allowed Morwell to somewhat stay in the match as they started to win a bit more footy and saw back to back inside 50s and minor scores from snaps to Josh Hecker and Boyd Bailey. Maskell was the dominant forward on the ground and had another shot on goal from the pocket but it failed to register. A questionable free kick against Aaron Heppell on centre wing gave the Tigers the ball and a spot up kick from Boyd Bailey followed by a little one/two action saw him receive the ball back and send home Morwell’s second goal of the day. Nathan Noblett got another one back for Morwell with a brilliant set shot from near the 50 metre mark on the canteen side. CLUB NOTES WONTHAGGI FOOTBALL Under 16s: Our boys went forward repeatedly in the first quarter without hitting the scoreboard, whilst our opponents capitalised on their opportunities to take an early lead. The game was played at a high standard with Cade using the ball well from clearances, James and Jai playing their positions well giving us options around the ground. Jarvis worked tirelessly in the midfield while Matrix was a rock down back along with Joel repelling Maffra’s forward thrusts. In a very even contest around the ground with our opponents having more options up forward the scoreboard did not reflect the efforts of our boys. We take a lot of belief out of the game and work on continuing our improvement into next week. Lily for benching for us this week.
