America’s Beach
Dare County’s Outer Banks consists of three island areas with a 100+ miles of beautiful ocean shoreline. The Cape Hatteras
National Seashore commands much of the expanse, putting you front and center for Mother Nature’s show. The barrier
islands curve far out into the Atlantic Ocean for a dynamic environment you won’t find elsewhere (and quick access to the
“blue water” and world-famous deep-sea fishing). One of the best parts is that even on our most crowded weekend, you
can find your own stretch of beach, not another person in sight. That’s what we call getting away from it all.

Getting Here &
Getting Around
The barrier islands of the Outer Banks are surrounded the north. So even though you may add a few miles
by water. That means you’ll either be coming in on by circling around to US 64 East (if traveling from

Road"). Between Kitty Hawk and Nags Head, The Bypass and NC12 run parallel to one another.
• The Bypass is a 4-lane highway with a shared interior turn lane. Slower traffic should stay in the outside
lane. Leave the inside lane for passing. Few things will lose you cool points with the Locals faster than
driving slowly in the inside passing lane.
• The Bypass’ shared middle lane can also be used to make left-hand turns easier (get to the middle lane
and wait for a break in the traffic to merge in), but since others are pulling in and out of that lane, too,
don’t use it like an on-ramp. Stay put until there’s a break in traffic.

• NC state law requires that cars stop for pedestrians at the yellow
crosswalk signs. It’s the law and it saves lives. Meanwhile, be aware of
upcoming crosswalk signs in case the car in front of you stops suddenly.
• You’ll notice little green signs occasionally, like the one in the picture
above. The numbers are sequential and mark miles. These mileposts are
often used by businesses to say where they are, “We’re at milepost 6.”

Over thirty years before the Pilgrims
landed at Plymouth Rock, a group
of 117 weary men, women and
children waded ashore and made
history on Roanoke Island in July
1587, establishing the first attempted
settlement of its kind in the Americas.
Three years later, these pioneers had
vanished into the great wilderness
and into folklore. Their story is
reenacted every summer during
performances of The Lost Colony at
the Waterside Theater on the grounds
of Fort Raleigh.
ELIZABETHAN GARDENS
Located within Fort Raleigh National
Historic Site, The Elizabethan
Gardens encompasses ten acres of
botanical and sculptural delights.
A monumental bronze sculpture of
Queen Elizabeth I, ancient Italian
Renaissance statuary, Elizabethan
elements and the solitary figure of
Virginia Dare provide continuity
to constantly changing flora.
Horticultural collections are extensive,
and annual color planted every
season gives The Gardens a different
perspective throughout the year.
THE FREEDMAN’S COLONY
Recognized as a historic National
Underground Railroad Network to
Freedom Site. A marker was erected
in 2001 to designate the site of a
permanent colony on Roanoke Island
between 1862 and 1867. Most of its
3,000 residents had been slaves three
years earlier in northeastern North
Carolina. A path through the woods
north of Fort Raleigh leads visitors to
a commemorative park along Croatan
Sound.
