The region was granted Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status for its rhubarb heritage by the European Commission in 2020. To celebrate its long history, Wakefield Council organises a fabulous Rhubarb Festival in February that not only includes purveyors of fine food and drink but features a huge variety of other options too. You’ll find market stalls (with tastings of course), plus a week long programme of entertainment including cookery demonstrations, street performers, live comedy, and music, plus it has its own ‘Rhu-bar!” And you’ll find delights such as rhubarb flavoured chocolate, chutneys, fudge and of course, many flavours of gin - there’s even been a rhubarb and salmon curry with a rhubarb and coriander sauce that is sure to delight your taste buds.
