MAGAZINE MAGAZINE DEAR BERTH HOLDER It must be my age but the years seem to be passing faster and faster, one moment we are preparing for the return of the Thames Used Boat Show at Easter and now we are ordering coal and grit in preparation for the winter! As always on behalf of all of us here at Thames & Kennet Marina we thank those new to the marina for choosing to base your boat with us and the continued loyalty of the many berth holders who renew each year, your custom is appreciated and never taken for granted. This year we have had two new additions to staff, Bob Johnson has joined Dave on marina and estate maintenance, hailing originally from Canada he is slowly getting used to our tropical climate. Due to the continued growth in new and used boat sales Laura Johnson (no relation) has taken up the mantle of sales administration, to enable Guy and Andy to concentrate on maintaining our position as Tingdenes’ busiest and one of the leading sales operations on the Thames. In 2018 we will again be hosting the Thames Used Boat Show over the Easter holidays. BERTH HOLDERS The cruise in company trips we organise have been very popular this summer, especially those to the Tidal Thames. In 2018 we will be going further visiting the north Kent coast, but more information on that later in this newsletter. We would like to thank the many dog owners who have been using the FREE dog poop bags, and CAR PARK remind everyone that all dogs whilst in the marina should be on a leash. With the onset of the colder wet weather and frosty mornings can we please remind berth holders that all walkways and finger If you are an Annual Marina berth pontoons should be kept clear of all your boating paraphernalia for yours and our safety. holder you are entitled to park up As always available to listen to any issues, concerns or suggestions with regard to the marina or boat to two vehicles in the marina car sales operation here at Thames & Kennet or any of our other marinas or sales offices. parking areas whilst you are on your boat, in an endeavour to maximise Kindest regards the available parking spaces from Lee the 1st December 2017 we will be introducing permit only parking on Tingdene Marinas Limited / Tingdene Boat Sales Limited site. GET YOUR BOAT READY FOR HIBERNATION WITH THESE WINTERISING TIPS Winterisation is a necessary evil of boat ownership but an insurance against any costly damage over the winter months. However, there is a lot you can do yourself which will save money and give you a better understanding of the systems on your boat. Fuel - Winterisation starts with prepping the fuel supply with diesel engine boats the best advice is to add a good quality fuel conditioner such as Fuel-Set which is available from the chandlery, one small bottle with treat 1000ltrs of fuel. Then fill your tanks to reduce the potential for condensation in the tanks. The lighter components in petrol will evaporate over time and will result in the fuel becoming heavier and will cause hard starting, spark plug fouling and rough running next season. So unlike with diesel you ideally want to have the tank as empty as possible so fresh fuel can be added in the spring to rejuvenate the existing petrol. Regardless of type, degrease your engine and then spray the entire block, linkages and wiring with lubricant that dries to a waxy film such as Double TT Spray which is available from the chandlery which lubricates, protects and displaces moisture. Outboards can be drained to prevent frost damage simply by trimming them to the full-down, running position. Outboard engine storage inhibitor - Some call it “fogging,” “smoking” or “pickling,” whatever the name it’s the process of coating your outboard engine’s internals such as bearings, seals and rotating surfaces with a thin film of protective lubricant, which helps keep rust and corrosion away. This can be done with the engine running; the fogging oil is squirted into the carburettors or fuel- injection system air intakes in such a way that it “floods” the engine with oil until it begins to smoke heavily. Continue fogging it until it stalls. When the outboard is next started this will burn off after a short period of running. Rock Oil Super Marine Inhibitor is available from the Chandlery. Fresh water systems – To prevent frost damage the fresh water system should be fully drained. Turn on the fresh water pump with all the taps open (galley and heads) and wait for the water to stop flowing, at this point switch off your water pump and disconnect the inlet and outlet of the pump which allows any trapped water to drain rather than freeze, expand and crack the pump housing. If your boat has an older “ascot” type water heater there is a drain plug on the bottom and disconnect the inlet and outlet pipes. For craft with calorifiers these have a drain fitting which normally requires the use of a normal household radiator key to open. In the spring simply reconnect everything adding a bottle of tank clean prior to filling with fresh water, allows this to sit for 24hrs and run this through the system to clean all the pipework until the tank is empty. Then partly fill the tank with fresh water to flush out the last of the tank clean. Toilet systems – Cassette or chemical toilets just need to be emptied of waste and flush water, with pump out systems the tank should be emptied and with raw water flush (water from the river) seacock should be closed. Then add some non-toxic antifreeze such as StarBrite Pink once again available from the chandlery, to the toilet bowl and then flush this will prevent a potentially very unpleasant task of replacing a frost damaged split waste hose. StarBrite Pink can also be used to protect a shower drain pump, simply pour into the shower drain and activate the pump briefly.
MAGAZINE MAGAZINE Condensation – The use of a dehumidifier is the effortless way to help control the excessive humidity that leads to musty odours, stains or corrosion aboard stored boats. Rather than rely on a large bulky electric unit, the simple absorbent pellet type version works just as well without the need for a constant power supply. Products such as the StarBrite No Damp special pellets automatically remove moisture from the air, depositing it safely in the convenient container. Great for cabins, heads, closets, and other enclosed spaces and available in a variety of sizes and can be used year after year just by replacing the pellets as required. In addition, cupboard doors, refrigerator doors should be left open and cushions lifted to allow air flow. Do not block air vents. Batteries - If You are having the boat out of the water for the winter charge the battery, and then remove the negative cable. Let it rest for several hours before verifying its status (Specific Gravity) each cell should have a specific gravity of between 1.21 and 1.28, if you are using a hydrometer. Always wear safety glasses when checking battery levels. Either use a trickle charger/maintainer or check the charge monthly if power is not available if you are unable to remove the batteries from the boat. If the boat is staying in the water, switch off all breakers except the one(s) for the bilge pump(s) and check the boat weekly, more frequently in rough weather and during power outages as trips do not always reset. Check the electrolyte level of flooded batteries and top off with distilled water — just enough to cover the plates. Plug into shore power and keep the battery charged with your installed charger or a regulated battery maintainer. Engines – Never rely purely on mains powered engine room heaters, power cuts, trips not resetting can and do happen. So advice is always to fully winterise your engine, due to the amount of different engines and systems we can’t list every process here but are more than happy to offer advice on an individual basis and as always if in doubt we have the contact details of local engineers who can THAMES & KENNET MARINA undertake this work for you. Weil’s disease, also known as Leptospirosis, is rare in Britain with around 40-50 cases reported each year, however the disease does kill one or two people every year. It is carried by water organisms, so those taking part in water sports can be at risk. In the early stages Leptospirosis can be mistaken for flu but can develop into jaundice, kidney and liver failure. While the risk of contracting the disease from recreational water is very small, due to the potentially serious nature of the disease means that marina users must be aware of the dangers and should take simple, routine precautions to reduce the risk of infection. • Never drink water from a river or lake • If river water has been swallowed, refer to your doctor with full details of the incident • Always shower after contact with the water • Wash hands thoroughly and shower if necessary before eating or drinking • Cover cuts and abrasions (including blisters) with waterproof dressings 14 15

HOW TO TIE THE CLEAT HITCH KNOT BOATING TIP - A cleat hitch is the best way to tie a boat to a pontoon. It is a quick and easy method of tying a rope to a cleat on a pontoon or boat that is also easy to untie. HOW TO TIE A 1. Take a turn around the base of the cleat, and then bring the BOWLINE line over the top of the cleat. 2. Wrap the line back under the arm of the cleat opposite the first turn, then back over the top of the cleat. 3. Wrap under the first arm a 2nd time and then back over the top of the cleat. You have now made a figure eight pattern over and around the cleat. Now form an under-hand loop and slip that loop over the arm of the cleat, which pins the free end under the last wrap. 4. Pull the free end tight and you have the neat, tidy and secure Cleat Hitch. 16 17
