SURF TIDE CHART - AUGUST TO SEPTEMBER 2021 PLUS 15 MINUTES FOR CHERRY TREE BEACH, LOCH SPORT END OF AN ERA... Many people may know Gary Powers as the Real Estate Agent who rode the Oztrike 3 wheel motorbike to property inspections, however, Gary and Leanne have a long history in Loch Sport that far extends that. Leanne started working at Graham Chalmers Real Estate in Loch Sport 26 years ago as an office assistant, and then obtained her license for property sales/rental management. Gary started working at Graham Chalmers 23 years ago, and then studied to obtain his Estate Agents Licence. In 1998 they took over the business renaming it ‘Gary Powers Real Estate’ and have been running the local business for the last 23 years. Gary and Leanne have been great ambassadors for Loch Sport promoting the area on programs like Getaway, Escape with ET and Postcards. This exposure led to surges in visitors and prospective buyers to the town and at times record sales of property. The pair sponsored the town’s famous New Years Eve Fireworks display with April and John Manley for 12 years. They have also sponsored local community clubs such as the Golf Club and Bowls Club. The biggest change they have seen in Loch Sport over the 26 years has been in the population growth. At one stage Loch Sport had a population of only 300 people, this has grown to around 1500 permanent residents with an increase in population on standard weekends by 200 to 400 people and an increase in over 1000 people on a long weekend. They have also witnessed the property price range increase, particularly over the last couple of years. When they first started in the real estate business in Loch Sport waterfront blocks were $45,000, now they are selling for around $250,000. Along with this there has been a massive change in the availability of property in town with 465 blocks of land for sale in 1998 and only 7 currently on the market. Leanne also commented on the way propertys are now marketed which has dramatically changed from paper advertisements to online listings making Loch Sport property more accessible. Although Leanne and Gary have sold ‘Gary Powers Real Estate’ the business, they will be staying in town to enjoy all Loch Sport has to offer (while having a well-deserved holiday!) and are looking forward to spending FOR BOM DISCLAIMER, PLEASE GO TO time with the many friends they have made throughout the years of running their business. www.bom.gov.au/oceanography/projects/ntc/vic_tide_tables Gary and Leanne would like to thank Loch Sports’ residents and holiday makers past and present for supporting their business over the years, and are looking forward to still seeing you all in town. Never let a chance go by … Along with all the other disappointments of the pandemic, it has been a frustrating time for artists wanting to show their work. Galleries and craft shops have been locked down again and again, and exhibitions cancelled, often at the last moment. So when an opportunity arose for free entry into an online exhibition, Loch Sport artists Dinah and Lisa decided to have a go. Information came from an email forwarded by Loch Sport CRG that invited submissions to the Wellington Show Pavilions – Online Art, Craft and Photographic competition. It was a simple matter of choosing categories and downloading photos of works, which would be judged and prizes awarded. That was in January, and nothing more was heard of the event until July, when both artists were surprised and delighted to receive large envelopes in the mail containing sashes, certificates for First Place, and cheques for $60. The event, administered by Marley Street Community Hub, WELLINGTON LIBRARY was sponsored by Wellington Shire Council through State Loch Sport Community House Government funding to run Community Activation and Social Each Thursday 1 - 3pm Isolation events. These include an isolation switch on a solar panel array, a house full of smoke and a carport involving a boat. Otherwise, our members have been busy training as well as repairing and servicing all our Fire Fighting Equipment as required, which is an ongoing process. Covid has put a strain on a lot of things, but it is good to see people coming to our Opp Shop on Sunday mornings. I wish to thank once again the members of the Brigade for their time in running this Loch Sport Institution and I also wish to thank members of the public for showing their support in these trying times. Once again I ask the question? Have you ever thought about joining the Brigade, either as an Operational Member or an Auxiliary Member? Come along any Sunday and have a talk, we will let you know what is involved. Please think about it? Also, if you are an operational member of any other CFA Brigade across the state have you ever considered assisting us if the need arises? CHARLES STREET RECREATION RESERVE COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT Robin is keeping the reserve under control and a working day recently cleared many broken branches and dead mulch, thanks again to David Garnham with the golf club tractor. Thanks also to the Tennis Club for doing a great job of cleaning the toilet block in readiness for the Golf Tournament, and John for fitting a solar light. Recently I was shocked to learn that the Helipad located on the Sports Oval, which is a fully authorised Helipad, has not been in operation for 4 years due to an incident occurring with an officer receiving an injury from a rabbit hole, and that other urgent landing sites have had to be used along the foreshore. After discussions with Barney Winton, who was one of the people responsible for the Helipad being installed, I placed a motion to the Reserve Committee at our last meeting that the reserve should undertake the laying of a concrete landing area as specified by the Victorian Government together with road access, replacement of windsock and testing of landing lights. Motion Passed. Air Ambulance is under discussion and interested, thanks Bob. This is a Priority One consideration for Loch Sport and we are going to need financial assistance, other help and any necessary advice from interested parties. LOCH SPORT SENIORS GROUP Hi everyone, In the last Link we were all excited and looking forward to our High Tea Biggest Morning Tea for the Cancer Council of Victoria on 31 May, but that wasn’t to be. Old Covid raised its head again and back into lockdown we went. We were lucky enough in Victoria that our lockdown was not very long, but since then NSW has had a large outbreak and is under lockdown as we speak, so a decision has been made to cancel our BMT for this year as we do not feel confident that any date we choose will be able to proceed. We are all really disappointed but hopefully next year will be bigger and better. We really do need everyone to be vaccinated so that we all can return to some sort of normality. Our mystery trip planned for September-October hopefully will be able to proceed as planned but it is anyone’s guess at this stage, we are really hesitant to set a date for anything. Our next meeting, fingers crossed, will be on Monday 16 August at the Public Hall in National Park Road at 10.30 am, I will post on the Loch Sport noticeboard on Facebook a week prior to the meeting. New members always welcome. Secretary - Christine Potter. Phone 51460796. LOCH SPORT ANGLING CLUB It is with our deepest regret that we have lost one of the Angling Club’s longest and most respected members, Mike Evans. Mike was always there to help and guide other members. He regularly attended Wednesday meetings, club trips and working bees at Benambra as well as Loch Sport group trips to Broken Hill, where he would participate in a few beers or a glass of red or two. The Angling club extends its deepest sympathy to his wife Madeline and family. The club is now operating within the new normal activities with observance of changing Covid 19 requirements, all those attending Wednesday social meetings and bimonthly meetings are required to either sign the attendance register or sign in via the Covid phone app. Friday night meat raffles have recommenced at the Loch Sport Lakeview Bar & Bistro. All raffles have been well supported. Thanks to all local Loch Sportians and visitor supporters, with special thanks to Peter and Tanya of the Lakeview Bar & Bistro, and to the Angling Club stalwarts who organise the raffles, namely Dennis, Graeme, Mike and Noel. All Angling Club members are encouraged to support our local pub through patronage of the bar, bistro and bottle shop. The early June Covid lockdown has again slowed progress with Benambra Fishing Lodge for the remainder of winter. Working bees and social trips will commence when the weather gets a bit warmer. Painting and deck staining will be the order of the day. Our bi-monthly committee meeting was delayed until Saturday 3 July due to Covid. Several of our committee members were unable to attend as they were on Covid restrictions in NSW, the meeting was conducted and new members approved. Those attending have made provisional plans for another trip to Benambra in early September, hopefully, the weather will be warm enough to get some painting and staining completed. A social drink and barbeque were held after the meeting and several Bowls Club members called over for a social chat. They were most welcome, and they extended invites to Angling Club members to their Bowls Club activities. New members are always very welcome to join the Angling Club. WHY I LIVE IN LOCH SPORT By Nina Vasquez I would describe Loch Sport as my salvation. In Loch Sport I found a place to connect, to belong and to explore new opportunities in crafts and especially in friendship. I arrived in Sydney, Australia in August 1987 migrating from Chile. I was alone with my young son, and knew very few people and spoke very little English. It was a lonely time, but I was determined to make the most of the opportunities that came my way. I met my then husband, William while I lived in Sydney. Then in 1996 we left Sydney to live in Newcastle, and travelled around the country. In 1998, William purchased a piece of land in Queensland, and he wanted to build the house himself. He used to be a computer operator and knew nothing about building a house. I also knew him well enough to know that he would be very enthusiastic about building in the beginning, but would soon lose his motivation to continue the work to completion. At the time I was 50 years old, and I had been a nurse, so I knew nothing about building either. I knew then, that if I wanted to have a house where we really could live, I will have to finish it myself, and realistically I didn’t have the knowledge or strength to undertake this task. In 1998, we sold our house in Newcastle, NSW, got a caravan and off we went travelling around Australia. When we arrived in Victoria, we stopped frequently to look around. We would stay a week or more in caravan parks and explored the beautiful towns and any other features that were around. We explored Lakes Entrance, Bairnsdale and Metung. We both fell in love with Metung, but the price of a house was too much for us. We arrived in Sale and went to the information centre and got maps of the area. We were staying in the caravan park, in Longford, Lizard Electrics Reg. No. 25913 that was under what is now the bridge on the way Sale. William asked them about Loch Sport, and they said, “It is just a fisherman village”, but William wanted to see for himself. So, we came to Loch Sport, and we loved what Electrical Contract Services: we saw. Everything was so beautiful, and we thought for sure the house prices would be the same as Metung. As Underground Supply we were leaving Loch Sport, we saw a house with a sign that said, “House for Sale $65,000”. We immediately Wiring New Houses turned around and went to Gary Powers Real Estate. We discovered there were many houses for sale, and we ended up purchasing the home I am still in today. Switchboards Lighting & Power We bought the house, and I am still living in it. I have lived in Loch Sport permanently since 2004, and feel very connected to this community. William passed away last March, but I am still here. I have been involved in many Reliable & Fair Service classes and activities offered at the Loch Sport Community House, of which I am a member of the Committee. I Jonathon Zdrazil am involved in the Christian community, and have found an expression for my faith. I have been able to make my Full groom from $55 Phone: 0438 640 512 home my own, and have a strong sense that I have found my place to belong.
