To pass the NSC with entry to Diploma study, a student must: • Pass English with 40% or more • Pass 3 other designated subjects with 40% or more (excluding Life Orientation) (Note: All Dainfern College subjects are designated.) • Pass 2 other subjects with 30% or more (Life Orientation can be one of these) The final promotion mark in each subject is calculated in the following ratio: Description Weighting CASS 25% Final Examination 75% TOTAL 100% STUDY & EXAM TIPS 1. Be prepared: Use your exam timetable to work out a study timetable. Your study timetable must: ☺ Be time efficient: Ensure that you have enough time to study for each exam. Prioritise and organise your time to ensure that you spend study time effectively. ☺ Be specific – your study timetable should be specific about what you are going to study in each study session e.g. Session 1: English Literature – Macbeth: Act I ☺ Be realistic – it’s not possible to study your entire Geography book in one hour on the morning of the Geography exam. ☺ Allow for regular breaks – don’t spend hours staring at a book hoping that you will magically absorb the information. Study for one hour at a time and take a ten-minute break at the end of each hour. During the break, get up and move around. Don’t start watching TV because your ten-minute break will turn into a three-hour break! Dainfern College 5
Grade 10 Study Guide - November 2019 2. Study actively and know your learning style – make notes, use mind maps, summarise information in your own words, practise with old exam papers, practise maths problems. Never learn by rote. It is boring and a waste of time! 3. Know your strengths and weaknesses: it’s always easier to study for subjects we are good at. Ensure that you give enough time to subjects that are difficult for you. 4. Understand your work – you will never remember what you do not understand. If you don’t understand a section of work, ask your teacher for help. 5. Make a study area: Choose a quiet place with few distractions – you should not have your cell phone, computer or a TV on. If you need music to study, play the music softly. Make yourself comfortable enough so you can concentrate but not so comfortable that you fall asleep. Always study in the same place and ensure you have good light. Have your study timetable in front of you and tick off each section that you complete. It will help to motivate you to continue. 6. Look after your physical well-being – get enough sleep (7-8 hours a night), eat healthy small meals regularly, exercise every day. Don’t party or stay out late because you will waste a day recovering. 7. Look after your emotional and social well-being – don’t fight with friends or family. Leave the conflict until after the exams! 8. Look after your spiritual well-being. 9. Writing the exam: Know the mark and time allocation of each exam. Arrive on time for the exam and know your exam venue before you start writing your exams! Have all the necessary equipment so that you do not have to borrow pens, pencils, calculators etc. Keep an eye on the clock while you are writing to ensure that you finish your paper. 10. Get enough sleep the night before; eat a healthy breakfast on the day of the exam. 11. Trust yourself – once the exam has been written, don’t worry about it anymore! Dainfern College 6
