WHEN YOU ARRIVE ACCOMMODATION Transfer Service Accommodation is provided in one of the university residences on campus. Our staff will be waiting to meet you at the Arrivals exit point and will be wearing All bedrooms are single, en-suite (private bathroom) and lockable. There is their Bede’s T-shirts. There is a launderette on campus for you to wash your clothes. Bede’s staff will show you how to use the washing and drying machines and help you if necessary. The cost ID Card of up to two washes per week is included in your course fees and covered by Bede’s. You will be issued with a University of Sussex ID card on arrival, which will give you access to the campus buildings, accommodation block and which will be used to purchase food at meal times. A £5 charge will be payable for any replacement. You will also be issued with a Bede’s ID card that will be needed for certain Bede’s internal operations such as withdrawing spending money or completing your questionnaire. Phone Home As soon as you have checked in, you should phone your parents to let them know you have arrived safely. If you need help phoning home, ask the Welfare Manager. Getting to know your way around In the evening after you arrive, we will hold a Welcome Meeting where you will meet key members of staff and your fellow students, and you will be given a tour of the campus. 5
MEALS You will receive a meal allowance of £22 per day to purchase your meals on the Materials campus. Levels The campus offers a great variety of places to eat and a diverse range of food, from a vegetarian restaurant, to contemporary English cuisine or international dishes. LESSONS Progress Tests Each week, you will be given a short test by your English Skills teacher to monitor your progress and make sure you have understood what has been taught in that week. In England, smoking is forbidden in any enclosed public spaces such as bars, restaurants, train stations, schools, colleges, airports etc. Most such places now have a designated smoking area outside. It is very important that anyone who smokes does so only in the designated area. It is illegal to purchase alcohol for anyone under 18. 18+ When there are social events, such as a meal out, our staff will not be allowed to drink, as they will be on duty. We will make sure that you are drinking sensibly during these occasions. When you are on free time, when our staff are not with you, we will expect you to behave like the responsible young adult we believe you are and to respect our rule of not drinking large amounts of alcohol. Please, do not return to campus having had too much to drink. 15

Keeping yourself safe CARE OF STUDENTS By international standards, the UK is a safe country with low levels of crime and violence. FIRST AID EMERGENCY CONTACT All Bede’s centres are equipped with First Aid kits which are easily identifiable by their DETAILS green cross sign. Every Bede’s centre has a number of staff who are First Aid trained and there is always at least one First Aider on duty. Bede’s must have parent/guardian contact details and next of kin details for all students in case of emergency. Students must not disclose their username or password. In an emergency, you should speak with the Centre Director, Welfare Manager or any staff member at your centre. 2. Accessing or hacking restricted areas of the school network is forbidden. 3. Students must not take/share/distribute photos or videos of other students without their consent. Digital Communication 1. Internet use during lessons must be for educational purposes only. 2. Students must not use VPNs or any other means to bypass the school’s filtering system. 3. Using the internet/school network to obtain, store, print, display or share any material which is obscene or abusive is forbidden. Peer-on-Peer Abuse Students who maltreat or abuse other students will not be tolerated at Bede’s. • Bullying/Cyberbullying (see page 11) • Physical violence • Sexual harassment/violence • Sexting (sharing indecent images) • Initiation/hazing activities Any incidents of abuse will have very serious consequences. 23

WHEN YOU LEAVE Leavers’ Ceremony Check Out There will be an official Leavers’ Ceremony on your last evening where the Centre Make sure you arrive at the office at the correct time to check out; if you need to get up Director will present departing students with their course certificate, English report, very early, the staff will wake you up. Checking out means: activities diary and any awards or prizes they may have won. • Signing the check out form Do not forget • Collecting your tickets and passport Make sure you take with you: • Collecting any unspent pocket money and foreign currency • Your Bede’s folder and all of your classwork • Collecting your bedroom deposit – if no damage has occurred • Your course certificate, English report and activities diary • Collecting any medicines we are looking after for you • Any souvenirs and presents you have bought • Collecting any valuables • All your clothes and personal belongings Departure • The contact details of your new friends! A staff member will take you to the airport/station in plenty of time to check in for your • Any other awards or prizes you have won flight/train.
