MOUNTS BAY ACADEMY HEAMOOR - PENZANCE - TR183JT Principal: Les Hall BA(Hons) PGCE MA NPQH 18th December 2020 Dear Parents / Carers, Return to school arrangements As you will be aware, the government announced yesterday that there will be a staggered start to the spring term. Year 11 should return to school as normal on Wednesday 6th January 2021. All other Year Groups should remain at home, apart from the children of Key Workers and vulnerable children who wish to attend who require supervision in school. A space will be provided where they can access the same remote learning which is being accessed by those at home. It is currently the government’s intention that all Year Groups will be back at school by Monday 11th January 2021. We will be issuing a voucher for all students who are eligible for a free school meal which will be emailed to their respective parent/carers. In the second week of term, Year 11 will be undertaking their mock exams. They should spend time preparing for these over the Christmas break. We will issue further detail regarding remote learning on Tuesday 5th January, with expectations in place for the rest of the week. We will also be in touch regarding any further changes that occur at this time. Parents will need to return a consent form so that their children can take part in school based testing and we will issue this to parents as soon as we have further details on this from the government. We regret this is all the detail we can issue at this stage, as the government announcement was only issued yesterday and is not particularly detailed. We are expecting more detail over the next few days. Please refer to two pieces of information below, released by the government yesterday. I am sure these will be updated over the coming days: Yours sincerely, Les Hall Academy Principal www.mountsbay.org enquiries@mountsbay.org 01736 363240 @mountsbayschool
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT A Time To Reflect… It is always a good time, before the Christmas break, to pause for a moment and reflect upon what has been the most remarkable of years in so many ways. We are passing through an exceptionally difficult time due to the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to this, further problems have not gone away such as extreme climate change. Ancient Indian tradition describes the creation, abiding and destruction of worlds over time. Among the causes of such destruction are armed conflict and disease, which seems to accord with what we are experiencing today. However, despite the enormous challenges we face, living beings, including humans, have shown a remarkable ability to survive. No matter how difficult the situation may be, we should employ science and human ingenuity with determination and courage to overcome the problems that confront us. Faced with threats to our health and well-being, it is natural to feel anxiety and fear. Nevertheless, I take great solace in the following wise advice to examine the problems before us: “If there is something to be done - do it, without any need to worry; if there’s nothing to be done, worrying about it further will not help.” Across the world, everyone is doing their best to contain the spread of the Coronavirus. I applaud the concerted efforts of nations to limit the threat. As a result of the necessary lockdowns across the world, many people are facing tremendous hardship due to a loss of livelihood. Many people in our Mounts Bay community have had circumstances that have changed many times over the year. For those with no stable income life is a daily struggle for survival. At this time we need to pull together as a community and look after one another. Looking after one another by staying distanced from each other seems a little strange, but it is necessary in these difficult times. So at this unique time of year under the most unique of circumstances we need to celebrate the best of human kind and of human kindness by being our best and kindest self each day. Never was there a time where #BeKind was so vital to everybody every day, and it is our compassion and empathy that will see us through this time. And with this in mind we look forward to the next year - 2021. Let’s enjoy the time spent with the friends and families that we can, and enter the New Year stronger as communities, and as people. Merry Christmas Les Hall Academy Principal
A CHRISTMAS WORD FROM MR ROYLE #BeKind A huge thank you for all of your efforts on making it through this term. I do remember asking all families to sign up to our Covid behaviour annex at the SLC day before we allowed students into school back in September. At the time we felt this was on the harsh side, but necessary and here we are, 14 weeks later, having had no positive covid cases amongst students or staff. Was this just luck? We shall never know, but I do believe that the way in which the Mounts Bay Academy students have risen to the Covid challenge has been amazing. The rigid protocols have been followed - our behaviour points are the same as usual, possibly even a little less and achievement data shows that staff are rewarding students more than ever. Though lessons have been little different and our timetable and rooming has not been quite as we would like it, the students have risen above this, showing resilience and flexibility. Congratulations to all of you! I would also like to thank anyone who has done anything for someone other than themselves. Throughout this term we have pushed the #BeKind phrase resulting in acts of kindness wherever we look. The seven House charities each receiving a significant sum following our Christmas Jumper Day due to the excellent work of the Junior Leadership Team. Thank you to Tegan, Keira, Jas, Isla, Enzo, Kit and Sam and a very Merry Christmas to all of you and best wishes for your big year next year. Our Houses have done some wonderful charity work, and though I have a natural preference for Pegasus House (soon to be winners of the 2020/21 Inter-House Cup you know?), congratulations to everyone in Chamaeleon, Delphinus, Draco, Pavo, Phoenix and Tucana as well as the mighty Pegasus. A big shout to Mr Troup and 7Draco who have raised a huge amount of money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust following their exploits last Saturday morning. Cold wasn’t it? As I type I am awaiting representatives from the Penance Foodbank, The Newlyn Centre and the Street Food Project, Penzance, all of whom are receiving generous donations in the form of the contents of your shoeboxes. By doing this the Academy is doing a little bit to make PEGASUS someone else’s Christmas a little easier. Again #BeKind. It has been a very strange year, and yet the Academy students have delivered the goods again - I suspect that next year will be somewhat up and down, but I believe that the DRACO Academy families will again shine, ensuring academic and social progression, but most CHAMAELEON importantly, kindness throughout the year. DELPHINUS Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2021 TUCANA PHOENIX PAVO
A WORD FROM MR ROYLE Thank You! Well done to everyone who brought in foodstuffs for our House Shoebox Competition. Your contributions will be greatly appreciated by everyone who really needs them this Christmas. Once again you have proved what a caring and generous community we live in. The MBA Interact Group would like to to thank you all. However, this was a House Competition and below are the results! As you can see Pegasus House triumphed! The results were checked and verified by the Interact Group who come from a selection of different Houses. PEGASUS PAVO DELPHINUS CHAMAELEON PHOENIX DRACO TUCANA Hi everyone, it’s Keira and Tegen from Pegasus House here. We want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year (hopefully it will be better than this year!) We’ve had a very different start to the academic year however it’s good to see everyone getting along with the new system and hopefully we can get back to normal soon. We hope you enjoy the break and come back feeling refreshed and ready to learn. Let’s keep pushing for our half or full colours and get this completed before the end of the year - more House points for us all! Enjoy the holidays, stay safe, Keira and Tegen. Farewell Mr Harvey Today we say goodbye to someone who has been instrumental in making Mounts Bay one of the most successful schools both in the region and internationally. Mr Harvey joined the school 35 years (and 122 days) ago and since then has been one of many teachers who have been an inspiration to generations of students and fellow staff, starting at a small secondary school “at the end of the line” finishing his career at what is now our nationally accredited Academy. In recent years he became the Chief Operating Officer for the Leading Edge Academies Partnership, a group of like minded schools who share a vision of 21st Century Learning. His passion for helping young people to perform at their highest level to achieve their dreams has never wained and he will be a tremendous loss to our day to day life. We hope that farewell is not goodbye and that we will be able to welcome him as a guest of honour to future events and celebrations. We wish him the best of luck in whatever he chooses to do next.
Christmas Service 2020 We were not able to have our usual Christmas Service at Madron Church this year but that did not stop us organising a service online with all the usual readings and musical performances from our students. Well done to everyone who took part, it always gets us into the Christmas spirit. View the service online here: https://youtu.be/3ObovCVqnhc
BE INSPIRED Year 7 Impress A huge well done to Year 7 for such a fantastic first term at Mounts Bay. You have all shown resilience, determination and most importantly, kindness. BE INSPIRED Fundraising Dip The weather had obviously read the script on Saturday as students from 7 Draco took to the sea in beautiful sunshine to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. The sea may well have been chilly but the students ran into the sea with huge enthusiasm and obviously enjoyed their exploits. They chose the Cystic Fibrosis Trust after researching the effects of Cystic Fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-limiting genetic condition affecting more than 10,000 people across the UK. It affects the lungs and digestive system and can cause chronic infections and reduced lung function. Currently, half of those with CF will not live past age 41. The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is fighting for a brighter future for people with CF and their families by funding cutting-edge research, driving up standards of care and supporting people with the condition and their loved ones every step of the way. Please give generously! BE INSPIRED The Old Vic Comes to Mounts Bay! In these Covid times a school theatre trip this term was never on the cards! Instead, we welcomed a live streaming of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol to MBA this week. Performed at the Old Vic in London and starring Andrew Lincoln as Scrooge, this seasonal classic brought to life Dickens’ message of redemption and the need to care for others. A very topical theme this year! All Year 10 students watched the production in their English classrooms and enjoyed a stunning theatrical performance. As well as providing our students with the opportunity of experiencing ‘live’ theatre, the production also helped to consolidate the students’ study of A Christmas Carol as a set GCSE Literature text. Many thanks to Ms Turner for organising the event, the English Department, the Tech Team, and the countless other staff who supported by rescheduling their timetables to ensure that students remained in their appropriate zone and ‘bubble’. A great performance of a classic tale was enjoyed by all. ‘And so, as Tiny Tim observed, `God bless Us, Every One! Report by: Mr Whiteman
EXCELLENCE BE YOUR BEST REWARD Da Vinci Awarded to Hollie Well done to Hollie in 8 CHAMAELON for raising over £400 for the recent poppy appeal. Hollie's grandad regularly raised money for the British Legion and this year, she decided to do the same, taking part in the 11x11 challenge which involved swimming 11x11 lengths of her local swimming pool (that's 121 lengths!). Hollie set up a page on a funding website and set a target of £111. However, after many generous donations, her final total was an impressive £402! This amazing effort has earned her a Da Vinci Award - well done Hollie! EXCELLENCE REWARD Report by: Mr Worsdell Roscón de Reyes Miss Tripp's Year 7 classes were tasked to research Spanish Christmas Traditions as part of their homework last week. Miss Tripp was extremely impressed with the quality of work shown, students made some excellent keynotes and fact sheets using their iPads. Alfie in 7 Draco excelled in his homework and baked a traditional Roscón de Reyes cake. This is a traditional sweet bread dessert which is made in both Spain and Spanish speaking countries across Latin America. Alfie made a version which included whipped cream, dried cranberries and a cream cheese frosting. This cake is traditionally eaten on the 6th January which is known as Three Kings Day in Spain. This dessert is eaten as part of a big traditional festive feast and presents are exchanged on this day rather than on the 25th December. Well done to all of our Year 7 linguists this year, even in these strange times our students have embraced learning a new language and are developing into brilliant global citizens. We look forward to seeing what you can achieve in 2021! EXCELLENCE REWARD ¡Feliz Navidad! Report by: Miss Tripp
BE CURIOUS Outstanding History Year 10 have been working on their Health and the People unit of work for their GCSE. Poppy German has gone above and beyond when creating her Louis Pasteur profile. Every aspect of this has been created by Poppy, she has demonstrated a range of HPL skills when producing this. Notice the detail, from the friends to the targeted adverts! Outstanding work, Poppy. BE CURIOUS Grow Your Own This week in the MBA garden we have been getting into the Christmas spirit! Firstly it is holiday celebration time, which we have been doing with cups of hot chocolate to warm us up, followed by home made mince pies and biscuits. It has been a lovely week and together we have been chatting about all the things we have done in the garden since September. It has been a really successful start to the year especially considering all the restrictions and difficulties to work around. The whole gardening team is excited about finishing the winter jobs and getting everything ready for late February and March when we can start sowing the seeds for next year’s crop. Now is a great time to start planning what to grow next year. We’ve been looking at which varieties are best, where to grow them as well as making sure we have succession planting planned so you get as long a harvest you can through 2021. We have also been finishing off our Christmas presents, decorating the mixed spring bulb pots that the students have made for family. The pots are a mix of snowdrop, crocus, daffodil and tulips which will start to grow early spring and will add a lovely bit of colour to the garden. Report by: Mr New
BE CURIOUS Grow Your Own Piran and Liam have been learning a very valuable skill this week - how to mend a puncture. Our brand new wheelbarrow has discovered the difficulties of carrying on with a very large bramble thorn through your inner tube. They removed the wheel, found the puncture and repaired it on Tuesday. Hopefully the tyre will stay pumped up and avoid thorns in the future. Finally this week Year 10 students have been clearing a large area in front of the poly tunnel ready for us to build some new compost bins. We will be building three compartments for composting out of pallets ready for creating our own compost for next year. Report by: Mr New

BE ADVENTUROUS MBA Wins ‘Places to Ride’ Funding A small grant has been awarded to Mounts Bay Academy to build a new off road bike track alongside the 3G and up onto the top mound, after a successful application to British Cycling’s ‘Places to Ride’ capital grants programme and supported by Cornwall Council. Penzance is hosting the start of the Tour of Britain this coming summer. Delivered through a unique partnership between British Cycling, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) and Sport England, the Places to Ride programme has made funding available to ensure a lasting legacy in England from the 2019 UCI Road World Championships. The championships took place in Yorkshire in September 2019. Neil Eddy, SGO at MBA said: "We are excited the bid has been confirmed for our track bid, this is part of our efforts to get more people active, more people riding and more active travel. The track will be available for our students, local primary schools and the local community" Andy Farr, Head of Business Planning and Transformation at British Cycling, added: “Mounts Bay Academy is doing great work to get more people cycling in the area, so we are pleased to support their efforts to bring the community together and support their project through Places to Ride. “As we enter the final period of allocating grants through the fund, we are incredibly proud to see how it has already enabled so many people from a range of backgrounds – regardless of age, gender, ability or ethnicity – to get involved with cycling.” Charles Johnston, Sport England Director of Property continued: “Sport England is proud to be delivering, in partnership with British Cycling, the single biggest government investment into community cycling facilities the country has seen in recent years. The investment will provide more facilities such as tracks and bike centres, where people can ride confidently and safely as well as access to essential equipment they need to have a go.” The 2019 UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire set out to be the most inclusive, innovative and inspiring road world championships in the history of the sport, and followed a successful bid by British Cycling, UK Sport and Welcome to Yorkshire. The bid pledged to use the once in a generation opportunity to help transform Britain into a great cycling nation, and the Places to Ride fund has ensured that the impact of the championships will continue to be felt for many years to come. BE CREATIVE BE CREATIVE Indian Music Workshop Last week we were fortunate to have a visit from Rachel Scofield and Patrick Bailey from Cornwall Music Education Hub. They ran a workshop and performance with our Year 10 GCSE class based on Indian Classical Music and Rachel performed some improvisation and a piece on the Sarangi. This is a traditional Indian instrument used in the Punjab which has strings and is played with a bow. It was a really interesting and informative session where the class were able to perform a piece at the end with Rachel following tradition Indian rhythms. This will be really useful when the class come to study Bhangra for their GCSE exam. Report by: Mrs Brown
Christmas Musical Events As you are aware, during a normal school year there would be a lot of opportunities to participate in music making during the festive season. This would involve trips to the theatre, Christmas Karaoke, the Carol Service and, one of our favourites, The Christmas Mini-tour. This is a highlight of the Music Department calendar and we love spreading Christmas cheer by giving performances in supermarkets, care homes and primary schools ending at the Sportsman’s Arms for their annual Christmas dinner. However, this year has meant that we have not be able to do these amazing events. To try and still spread festive cheer in a socially distanced and safe way, we have done some smaller scale performances which you can access below. We have had the absolute pleasure of guest vocalists, keyboard players and drummers working together to create some Christmassy (and not so Christmassy) performances. Some of these may be more surprising than others, and it was hilarious and brilliant to rehearse and perform as a staff team to bring you these recordings. I am really appreciative of all of the time given by staff to make this happen. To keep up some of the suspense, I have only put the name of the song. You will get to see who is singing (or drumming) when you watch the clip. BE CREATIVE BE CREATIVE Hospitality and Catering This week being the final week for 2020, we had to cook something Christmassy. So with the Christmas songs playing everyone got into the festive mood and began showcasing the skills learnt in lessons over the last few months. We had pastry made from scratch for some scrumptious mince pies, brownies were a popular choice, turned into Father Christmas hats, and the traditional Christmas Yule log were all in the process of being made. The smell was divine in the room, and Mr Jenkins was lucky enough to try a Chocolate mince pie made by one of the students, and he said "It was the best he had ever had.” I have been so impressed with the enthusiasm, dedication and creativity shown this year by all students taking the food course, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents that have supported your son/daughter with supplying ingredients for them to be able to cook. I hope you have been able to enjoy some of their culinary delights, although some of the dishes do get consumed by themselves before getting it home. I wish you all a Merry Christmas, and look forward to welcoming you back and continuing to develop your cooking skills even further in 2021. Report by: Miss Osborne

BE ENVIRONMENTAL Because it’s our planet I am super impressed by the Eco Committee this half term. In spite of not being able to meet in school they have shown up on Teams every Monday and have worked incredibly hard to get across the message of a sustainable Christmas. They have now also got their own page on the website and will be redesigning this in the new year to keep everyone up to date with top tips to support a Green Future. They also made contact with the original Green Father Christmas and have a Christmas film for you. Sit back and enjoy, then watch the other ‘How to’ films that follow it on the website, to make your Christmas more ‘playful, creative and sustainable!’ Merry Christmas from the Eco Team! BE COMPETITIVE Christmas Run All 1000 of Mounts Bay students took part in a Christmas run or walk as part of the Junior Leadership Team's festivities and charity event on National Christmas Jumper day last Friday. Keeping active is important to all of us particularly at the moment. During their lunchtime students walked, and some even managed to run, a mile (5 laps of the 3G). The Christmas jumpers and seasonal music kept all participants entertained and suitably festive during their laps of the 3G. MBA was one of many schools taking part in this event across the county and wider country. Report by: Mr Eddy
