Peter the Great: A Czar Larger Than Life $25 / $30
June 3 at 2:30 – 4pm, Friday
AR4780 – The Arlington (Southeast Naples)
Speaker: Nancy Maxwell
Peter the Great dragged Russia kicking and screaming into the seventeenth century! Peter was larger than life – a
towering man with towering ambition to match and a vision of greatness for Russia. No project was too big: move the
capital city! Or too small: measure the length of men’s beards! To modernize the state Peter turned his hand to every
aspect of Russian life. Was he a visionary reformer or a ruthless tyrant? This lecture will explore the life and legacy
of a most unusual czar.

The Last of the Romanovs $25 / $30
June 6 at 2 – 3:30pm, Monday
AG4781 – Aston Gardens (North Naples)
Speaker: Nancy Maxwell
The 300-year-old Romanov dynasty, all powerful rulers of the Russian empire, came to a shocking end in 1917 as
the Russian Revolution swept across the country. For some time, their story was lost, swallowed by larger world
events. How did Czar Nicholas II, a gentle family man end up in a remote prison? What happened to his five
children and their bright futures? What was the fate of the extended Romanov family? This lecture attempts to trace
their story and resolve some of the mysteries.

For love, power, intrigue and scandal you cannot beat the story of Mary Stuart! She was Queen of Scotland at six
days old, Queen of France at sixteen, and, had events gone as planned, Scotland would today be a part of France.
Mary fully expected to become Queen of England as well. Instead in a tragic twist of fate, Mary lost her head. Her
life was one of political ambition, intrigue, love, murder, plots and deception. Did Mary create her own fate or was
she a victim of much stronger outside forces?

CONCERTS / LECTURES

Operas, Musical Theater and their Literary Origins: Lecture & Concert $25 / $30
July 8 at 2:30 – 4pm, Friday
AR4841 – The Arlington (Southeast Naples)
Speakers: Rachel Cox / Judy Kaff
Many of the great operas and classics of musical theater began as literary ideas. The abstract power of music and its
ability to inspire images of reality and connect with the human experience – attributes observed by the ancient
Greeks – will be analyzed in this presentation. The ability to relate to a melody and follow its ultimate destination is
similar to the development of a dramatic character. Explore how a novel or novella, poem, play, or a myth comes to
life musically and how the libretto transforms the work to fit the operatic stage. Selections from the operas and
musicals that will be performed include L’Orfeo, Le Marriage de Figaro, Faust, Cavalleria Rusticana, Thais, Romeo
and Juliet, Les Misérables, Cats and The Phantom of the Opera. Excerpts from the literary sources will accompany
each musical selection.

folk songs of the British Isles, the cultural import of European classical music in this emerging culture, the rise of
popular music and Tin Pan Alley, Latin roots that run deep in the national heritage, and the classic American genres
of jazz and rock and roll. Musical selections include the works of Amy Beach, Aaron Copland and Ruth Crawford

The music of Johann Sebastian Bach has had a profound influence on composers and musicians to the present day.
Bach, who came from a reputable lineage of church musicians, fathered twenty children, four of whom distinguished
themselves as composers and musicians in their own right. The works of each of his sons bear the influence of their
father, who was their mentor, while also reflecting the contemporary Rococo and Classical styles that had
Southwest Florida | Summer 2022
supplanted the Baroque tradition. Enjoy a presentation of music by J.S. Bach and of four of his sons: Wilhelm
Friedemann, Carl Phillip Emanuel, Johann Christoph Friedrich and Johann Christian.

Versailles and the key events of the reign of Louis XV.

Speaker: Nancy Maxwell
Southwest Florida | Summer 2022

The Scientific Revolution and Age of Enlightenment brought new knowledge and ideas to an increasingly literate
European society that was hungry for information. The famous “salons” of Paris, attended by aristocratic men and

Products of their age, some monarchs embraced the new ideas, hoping to reform systems and strengthen their states.
But what happened when ideas of reform clashed with notions of their own power? How far could the
Enlightenment go? We will examine the plans, personalities and performance of Frederick the Great, Maria Theresa
and Catherine the Great.

The Creation of Italy $25 / $30
July 26 at 1:30 – 3pm, Tuesday
SL4902 – Siena Lakes (Northeast Naples)
Speaker: Nancy Maxwell
A visitor to Italy today travels freely through the magnificent cities of Florence, Naples, Rome and Venice; but it
was not always so easy. Italy is a relatively new country, and the fabled cities may indeed be regarded as prizes,
because they did not all join Italy willingly! It took a combination of the wily statesman Camillo Cavour, the
political activism of the secret revolutionary Giuseppe Mazzini, and the romantic nationalism of Giuseppe Garibaldi
– none of whom wanted to work together - to draw disparate “Italians” together. And even that wasn’t quite enough.
Napoleon III and Bismarck had something to add. This presentation will look at the remarkable personalities and
events that led to the emergence of a unified Italy in 1871.

The Creation of Germany $25 / $30
August 4 at 10 – 11:30am, Thursday
BR4908 – Commons Club at the Brooks (Bonita Springs)
Speaker: Nancy Maxwell
Perhaps because of its dominant role in two world wars, it is easy to think of Germany as an old nation with a long
history. But Germany is a young state, less than 150 years old. The original territory was divided into myriad small
holdings ruled by independent noble families and surrounded by the powerful states of Austria and France. The path
to unification would be blocked by all of these. Despite earlier attempts, it took the rise of Otto von Bismarck, with
his cunning, wisdom and political acuity, to overcome all these obstacles and establish the German Empire.

only for Israel? Additionally, we will discuss other Mossad operations (Eichmann, the Hangman of Riga, other
assassinations) and Israeli intelligence organizations.

When are corporations too big? Trust Busting or Busting Trust? We look at two honorable gentlemen of the last
century set on the horns of a dilemma. President Roosevelt and many others believed that “trusts” (corporations) had
grown so big, they needed to be curtailed. Mr. J.D. Rockefeller had “done the good work” of making heating oil
readily available at a good price for the common man. Today our nation faces the same question it faced 100 years
ago. When is a business too successful and how or should it be broken up?
