BIO Born in La Tuque, Quebec, Sophie Villeneuve is a folk singer-songwriter based in Whitehorse (Yukon) since 2013. Mixing story telling and music, she transports her audience into her Yukon world inspired from Nature and northern adventures. In 2016, Sophie wins the music competitions Pacifique en Chanson and Chant’Ouest in which she also obtains the Public's Choice Award. In 2017, Sophie is positively received by the critics after performing in the prestigious Festival International de la Chanson de Granby (FICG) music competition. On television, she was seen in Prise de Son with Eloi Painchaud and Jean-François Breau, as well as in Constellation Francophone where she collaborated with Lennie Gallant and Elisapie Isaac. Her atypical life path inspired Les Productions Rivard for an episode of Chacun sa Route on TVA national channel in 2017. Her new record, Le Chant du Hibou, was released in January 2018. Produced by Jim Holland (Green Needle Records, Whitehorse, Yukon), the album takes its inspiration from Sophie's northern adventures since she moved to the Yukon in 2013.
SHOW Inspired by her new Yukon world since she left Quebec, Sophie Villeneuve shares her life story with authenticity in her show Le Chant du Hibou. From dog sledding to skiing on avalanche terrain, to talking about her northern romances or living in a wall tent in the winter, she does not miss a chance to let her audience travel with her. Characterized by her direct lyrics, Sophie switches back and forth between guitar and piano to share her songs that are mainly in French with a few titles in English. Addressing her audience as if they were around a campfire, Sophie Villeneuve offers an authentic experience in a world th North of the 60 parallel. Solo, duo ou trio, Le Chant du Hibou is flexible in its presentation and can last up to 1h15. “Sophie's performance is like a mural of her Yukon story. With a magnifying glass, she presents each image of the mosaic, from a story to another. But when we step back, we see that everything connects as a whole." (translated from French) – Robert Bellefeuille, artistic director FICG
