Introduction Welcome Wrecker! The Rose City Wreckers was founded in July of 2008 as an outlet for those 18 and older who wanted to skate, play derby, and be a part of the Rose City Rollers without the demanding commitments of competitive play. The Wreckers program serves as the recreational side of Rose City Rollers where skaters can show up when they want and skate at their own pace with others who are there to do the same. Involvement is a HUGE part of roller derby. As a grassroots, not-for-profit organization, we rely on everyone's volunteer efforts and input to keep things going. While there are no volunteer requirements for Wreckers, you are welcomed and encouraged to work with RCR committees, take part in events, market, promote, and represent the league just like everybody else. Ultimately, RCR recognizes and appreciates hard work and involvement on and off the track. What is this handbook for and how is it updated? The Wreckers Handbook is a guidance tool for members of the Wreckers program of RCR. This handbook is a living document and will be updated annually. The handbook is intended to create accountability, train people regarding expectations and act as a succession document for the new generation. Updates are provided by the Wreckers Administration, comprised of Wreckers Leadership and WrAdmin. This handbook includes Wreckers program-specific information that is supplemental to the Rose City Rollers Handbook, which is the guiding document for all league programs and members within. All RCR members and programs are expected to adhere to the RCR Handbook guidelines. 2018 Wreckers Handbook 2
Wreckers Mission Statement The Rose City Rollers Wreckers are a diverse group of skaters empowering women to discover their own athletic potential. We challenge ourselves and our derby teammates to improve our skills in a collaborative and fun environment. As a division of Rose City Rollers (RCR), we support the league's mission and actively promote roller derby in the community. Rose City Rollers Gender Inclusivity Statement In line with our mission to foster an inclusive community, our league welcomes trans and gender-expansive athletes — regardless of their preferred pronouns — who feel most comfortable playing women’s roller derby. Please see the WFTDA Gender Statement for more information. Core Values The Wreckers program core values are: • Community • Challenge • Athleticism • Empowerment • Fun 2018 Wreckers Handbook 3
Wreckers Program Leadership and Administration The Wreckers administration team is a group of volunteers who have taken on leadership responsibilities for the program, providing guidance by managing the program and leading others with their hands, mind and spirit. The Wreckers administration team is comprised of 2 volunteer groups: 1) Wreckers Leadership, and 2) WrAdmin. Wreckers Leadership is a small group of elected volunteers who have been assigned limited voting rights to make quick decisions on Wreckers-specific issues when needed to drive the goals of the program. Members include the Leadership Chair, Wreckers Admin, a Green Level Wreckers (GLW) Captain, Minimum Skills Requirements (MSR) Coordinator, and the 101 Liaison. WrAdmin is a larger group of volunteers who have been elected to fulfill their documented roles and responsibilities and to be a part of the creation of program goals. Members include the Coach Wrangler, Events Committee Rep, Training Committee Rep, Social Media Coordinator, Orientation Coordinator, WrAllies Coordinator, Heat Press Managers, Wreckers Attendance Tracker, Name and Jersey Wrangler, Wreckers Volunteer Coordinator, a GLW Captain, MSR Lead Checkers (3), WrAdmin Secretary, Rent and Roll Manager, and Wreckers Treasurer. Non-Wrecker skaters: Wreckers practices are also open to the following skaters, provided they sign liability waivers at each practice they attend: i. Alumnae (RCR team retirees) per the Alumnae policy (see RCR League Handbook for details) 1. Alumnae skaters will not be required to get approval for drills or scrimmage readiness unless they have been off skates for more than 6 months. ii. Guest skaters from other leagues, pending approval from Wreckers Administration. iii. Drop-in skaters from other leagues, pending approval from Wreckers Administration and a drop in fee of $10 per practice iv. Practices may include skills, drills, endurance, and strategy. The specific format may change from practice to practice based on attendance, coaching staff, and the needs of the group. 2018 Wreckers Handbook 8
b. Practice Requirements: i. Every practice must adhere to the RCR guidelines, which includes the following: 1. There must be at least one person off-skates or two people on-skates with current CPR certification for our insurance to be valid. 2. There must be at least one skater who has been a league member for 6 months or longer. ii. Practices are closed, which means no visitors - this applies to partners, children, and pets as well. Wreckers are encouraged to invite friends and family to watch at open scrimmages when fire permits allow for the extra hangar capacity. 2018 Wreckers Handbook 9
Skill Levels RCR takes skating safely very seriously and has developed a comprehensive rubric and process for assessing the skill level of skaters, which will define what practices and events they may participate in for the safety of themselves and others. Please see the league MSR documents and the Wreckers MSR Checking documents in Apex for more detailed information. Skaters’ skill levels in Wreckers are identified by colored tape on their helmets. The following is a brief description of these levels: • Orange: Beginner/Injured skater; can participate in little to no contact • Red: Novice skater; can participate in light/medium contact • Yellow: Developing/Intermediate skater; can participate in full contact drills • Green: MSR cleared skater; can participate in full contact drills and also scrimmages Note: Derby 101 skaters are considered Orange level but wear red since they do not participate in mixed skill practices until they have reached Red level. All skaters in the league are required to pass their MSRs (Minimum Skills Requirements) prior to engaging in scrimmages. This applies to all active, alumnae, guest, and drop-in skaters. The only exceptions to this are the occasionally offered Non-MSR cleared Open Scrimmages which offer a level of play that is safer for skaters who are still developing MSR skills. Skaters are expected to maintain their skill level to continue to participate in applicable activities. MSR checkers can reassess skills as necessary to ensure safety standards are being upheld. Wreckers assess skaters’ skills via MSR assessments that occur roughly once per month. See the RCR calendar for dates and the Wreckers MSR Checking documents for more details. Should any skater be absent from Wreckers practices for three months or more, they may be required to be re-assessed prior to attending practices. 2018 Wreckers Handbook 10
Other Items 1. Derby Names a. Derby names are optional and are earned by consistently contributing to the league and Wreckers program. b. To be eligible to register a skater name with the league, Wreckers must: i. Have six consecutive months of membership (monthly dues and/or Derby 101) ii. Have a minimum of 36 volunteer hours logged in Volgistics c. Rose City Rollers maintain a PG-13 public image and atmosphere at events. For that reason, all derby names must also be PG-13 when used in public. This includes skaters, officials, volunteers, etc. Cuss words and/or obscene references are not considered PG-13. If a member of RCR chooses to use a derby name that is not PG-13, they must use a "family friendly" version of their derby name on all uniforms, bout programs, team info for announcers, and any other public arena. d. Skaters are responsible for tracking their requirements themselves; when a skater believes all requirements have been completed, the skater must send their request, including desired name, to namewrangler@rosecityrollers.com; admin will then confirm that the skater has met all requirements and submit the name to the league on the skater’s behalf; if admin finds that the skater has not completed all the requirements, the skater will be informed e. If Wreckers transfer to Rockets, they become subject to Rockets requirements for earning a derby name. 2. Voting Rights a. Wreckers who are new league members are encouraged to attend and participate in league meetings. They do not have voting rights, unless otherwise noted. b. Any Wrecker wishing to gain voting rights will need to request to become a Provisional Voting Member. Candidates must fill out a form and then wait for approval by the RCR Board of Directors. c. See RCR League Handbook for more details regarding processes for voting and applying to become a Provisional Voting Member. 2018 Wreckers Handbook 11
3. League Meetings a. Wreckers are not required to attend league meetings according to RCR league policy; however, they are strongly encouraged to attend. A lot of good information is given regarding volunteer opportunities, upcoming events and general RCR business. 4. Hangar Usage a. The Hangar door code will be given out to Wreckers after six months of regular practice attendance; please see an admin after six months to request the code. Any private practice times must have at least one person in attendance who has been with the league 6 months or longer. b. For skaters to be covered under WFTDA Insurance there must be at least one CPR certified person in attendance off skates or two CPR certified persons on skates. c. The heater should not be turned on unless 15 or more people are in attendance. d. Any league member can request private practice time during times that are not occupied on the RCR calendar, provided they meet the above requirements. Requests can be made for the current or following months only. Teams/Programs receive first priority, then it is first come, first serve for individual requests. See the RCR League Handbook for more details. 5. Transitioning from Wreckers to Rockets a. Wreckers who want to be on a home team will need to try out for Rockets. Tryouts are approximately once a month. Wreckers are not guaranteed a spot on Rockets. The Rockets program is a competitive program designed to get skaters drafted onto a home team.
