Victorian Award categories There are four team award categories for 2019: • Customer Experience Achievement of the Year Customer Experience has a number of variations and abbreviations. CX, UX, UI, customer centric, people at the centre – they all mean pretty much the same thing – Are we delivering something that people want and can use? A good digital customer experience requires a totally new approach to service delivery. It demands new business processes and cultural change within council. None of this is easy. • Collaboration or Partnership Achievement of the Year Working together to achieve better, faster, simpler and more cost effective outcomes for our communities. Collaboration or partnerships between council business areas; between councils; or between councils and external service providers, other levels of government, research organisations or community groups are all eligible. • Smart City Achievement of the Year Using information communication technologies and data to be more efficient, solve challenges, and provide new opportunities. Smart communities advocate for the integration of technology and data infrastructure, promote digital technologies to increase the capability of existing infrastructure and services, and champion citizen involvement and citizen-focused service delivery. • Strategy and Planning Achievement of the Year Without well-defined goals and a high-level plan to achieve them, it can be easy to be deliver unneeded output, rather than desired outcomes. Strategy and planning shapes and guides what the project is, who it serves, what it does, and why it does it. It also clarifies the actions needed to make progress, and includes clear measures to determine if it is successful. Entries may be considered in multiple award categories. Australian and International categories The Victorian Achievement of the Year will be awarded to one of the four Victorian award category winners. Interstate local government associations are invited to nominate a single local government achievement to represent their state or territory in the Australian Achievement of the Year award. The winner of the Australian Achievement of the Year will be Australia’s nomination in the 2019 LOLA International Award for Excellence, competing with local government entries from New Zealand, Canada, Sweden, Netherlands, United 7 States, United Kingdom and Belgium. The winner will be announced in May 2019 at the LOLA Conference in Sweden. Interstate and International award nominations will be assessed according to how well they demonstrate outstanding innovation, effort and outcomes; advance the digital transformation of local government; support council business objectives; and influence or assist other councils to improve service delivery. Entries close on 28 February 2019

AUSTRALIA LINKED ORGANISATION OF LOCAL AUTHORITIES NATIONAL CONFERENCE & AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE Riding the wave Transforming local government for the digital era 25-28 MARCH 2019 @ KARDINIA PARK, GEELONG, VICTORIA The Municipal Association of Victoria is a not-for-profit association for local government that’s been around since 1907. Its members are the councils of Victoria. The MAV provides advocacy, support and guidance for its members – and as such, has a critical role to play in helping metropolitan, regional and rural councils and communities thrive in the digital era. MAV Technology “Riding the wave” National Conference & Awards for Excellence will be held in Geelong on 25-28 March 2019. It’s deliberately located an hour from Melbourne, close to the surf coast beaches and the Great Ocean Road to bring the conversation to the regional Victoria, encourage delegates to stay for the full program and also make it more attractive for our invited international speakers. March is a sensational time of year here! The primary focus of the conference is how we are transforming local government to serve and support communities in the digital era. Topics will include emerging technologies, AI, data ethics, business transformation, data governance, customer experience, smart cities, new and collaborative ways of working, digital access, equity and diversity – and navigating the massive cultural change that all this will bring. It will include rural, regional and metropolitan council case studies from across Australia. Our secondary theme will explore how indigenous cultures might help shape our collective future in the digital era, using some inspiring Māori & Aboriginal people and case studies to illustrate different ways of finding purpose and self-worth in challenging times. Our conference chair, David Bartlett (former Premier of Tasmania) is excited to be returning in 2019 and will co-chair with Jirra Lulla Harvey, founder of Kalinya Communications and an inspiring and tech-savvy Yorta Yorta / Wiradjuri woman. We usually attract an audience of about 300 people from around Victoria, interstate and overseas. It is a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Our program is not streamed so everyone has the same experience of inspiration, education and conversation fuelled by great food, wine, music, culture and company. The event will begin with a welcome reception at a Geelong landmark, attended by dignitaries including our keynote speakers, mayors, councillors, sponsors, partners and delegates. The conference itself will be held at Kardinia Park in the President's Stand of GMHBA Stadium which overlooks the football ground. It is an interesting and unusual venue, where the Geelong Cats will be in action preparing for the 2019 footy season. It features 26 state-of-the-art audio visual facilities, comfortable seating (at tables), fabulous catering and an expansive trade expo space allowing for innovative and exciting new displays from our exhibitors.
We’ll be welcoming an outstanding group of keynote speakers who we will confirm soon. To give you an indication of what you can expect, last year's speakers included Thomas Frey (Google’s top rated futurist speaker), Larry Irving (one of the world’s leading thinkers on technology for social good), Peter Auhl (CEO Magazine's CIO of the Year 2017 and CIO at City of Adelaide), Sam Hannah-Rankin (Director Public Sector Innovation, Victorian Government), Claudia Lajeunesse (Head of Digital iD™, Australia Post), Martin Ferguson (Director of Policy & Research at Socitm, UK), Kelly Grigsby (CEO City of Wyndham), Scott Thomson (Customer Solutions & Innovation, Google Cloud APAC, Google) and Harry Turnbull (CIO at City of Windsor, Ontario, Canada). Previous special guests have included Judith Lucy, Charlie Pickering, Todd Sampson, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki and Peter Helliar. On night one of the conference, we host the MAV Technology Awards for Excellence Dinner. It will be held at the spectacular The Pier Geelong and will be a formal affair celebrating innovation in local government ICT in Victoria, across Australia and around the world. We’ll have Casey Bennetto (Keating! the Musical) and the band on board to announce the awards in their musical and entertaining way. On night two of the conference we offer an informal dinner get-together at Little Creatures Brewery, with special guests, Tripod. The music, food and conversations are sure to be sensational. On day three there is an optional half-day site tour that includes special access to Deakin University’s world-leading innovation centre and the City of Greater Geelong’s impressive technology assets, OR you can choose to attend a masterclass. The region also provides access to recreational options like golfing at Angelsea amongst the kangaroos, catching a wave at Torquay, or walking your way through the famous Geelong Botanic Gardens, the iconic Baywalk Bollards and the spectacular Geelong Waterfront. The Riding the Wave conference will be held from Monday 25 March – Thursday 28 March 2019. The weather should be wonderful and there are accommodation options to suit every budget. MAV Technology member councils will enjoy heavily subsidized registration prices at less than half the cost of a standard registration. Special rates are also available for our interstate local government ICT association colleagues. 27 This conference is made by local government, for local government. See you there!
