A copy of the procedure is available at all school offices or from the Human Resources Director. Dual Enrollment Policy Dual enrollment is a program that extends educational learning options to students who qualify to take academic classes at a post-secondary institution while attending high school. The program is available to juniors and seniors who meet the State of Michigan and Reeths- Puffer School requirements for the program. For more specific details and enrollment information, students should see their counselor. Test Out Policy Testing out of a course is intended for students to establish credit in a course they have failed or to advance to the next level in a subject area. In order to provide students with course syllabi and supplies, students must pick up an application in the counseling office and pay a fee which is refundable upon completion of all application directions. The test window for 2021-2022 will be during the 4th week in August and early January. Class Rank A student's rank in class is based on the cumulative semester grade point average. AP classes will be calculated on a weighted 5.0 scale in determining class rank. Senior Final Rank in Class A student's GPA at the end of the 7th semester is compared to all other classmates'. This determines a student's place or rank in the graduating class. By honoring students' course requests, they will be held accountable for these selections in both the first and second semesters. To have a schedule adjustment made, one of the following criteria must be met: Incomplete schedule Need to retake a failed core course Teacher recommendation - the student does not meet class prerequisites Summer School or Test-Out credit earned There are, at times, adjustments made to student schedules due to overloaded courses whereby counselors are authorized to make changes to meet class size guidelines. The courses in this curriculum guide will be offered only if registration figures indicate a sufficient demand for the course. If there is not enough demand, alternative choices will be provided. Student selections made through this registration process will be considered final. The deadline for changes is 4/16/2021. Freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior students must be enrolled in six classes each semester. From these activities, students are able to learn about careers, decision-making, employability skills, goal setting, career pathways, and resources. These activities are driven and documented in the student's Educational Development Plan (EDP). EDP's are created and updated in an online program called Xello. Students can access and share their profiles with parents by logging into their Google account and clicking on the XELLO link. Business and Technology 99 COOL TOOLS & MOBILE APPS (AC) .5 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: None 9, 10, 11, 12 99 Cool Tools & Mobile Apps provides students with a foundation for proficiency as a user of a variety of mobile devices and apps. This course offers exposure to image manipulation; video and audio editing; collection, analysis, protection, storage and dissemination of data; personal productivity; presentations and more. Tools explored include Google Drive, keyboard shortcuts, Zamzar, Doodle, VozMe, Prezi, Blogster, Code.org, and many more. Students will learn the basics of good site design, functionality, and will gain exposure to HTML5 through the creation of prototype and original apps using sites such as MIT's App Inventor, Udacity, and Android Studio. AP COMPUTER SCIENCE - AC (MR) 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: Programming 10, 11, 12 Advanced Placement Computer Science A (“APCS-A”) will give students exposure to college-level computer programming. 3/15/2021 Reeths-Puffer Curriculum Guide CAD 100 (AC, MR) 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: None 9, 10, 11, 12 CAD 100 offers an introduction to the concepts and principles of drafting and AutoCAD through a variety of 2D and 3D mechanical and architectural projects using Autodesk AutoCad software. This course is recommended for students with interests in engineering, architecture, or mechanical/industrial technology, and counts as a 4th-year math-related credit. CAD 201 DRAFTING FOR ENGINEERS (AC, MR) 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: CAD 100 10, 11, 12 CAD 200 students will learn advanced skills in the use of CAD. Students will study manufacturing processes used in industry and how to communicate these processes via CAD using SolidWorks software. Emphasis is placed on the production of 3D projects. Course counts as a 4th-year math-related credit. CAD 202 FOR ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN (AC, MR) 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: CAD 100 10, 11, 12 CAD 202 includes advanced concepts of Architectural Drafting, AutoDesk's Revit Software, and Interior Design. The course is project-oriented and will require students' development of a set of working architectural drawings for a residential dwelling. Students will also develop Interior Design skills that include planning, designing, equipping, and furnishing residential and commercial interior spaces. Course counts as a 4th-year math-related credit. CAD 300 FOR ENGINEERING (AC, MR) 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: CAD 200 11, 12 CAD 300 is an advanced class in Engineering/Drafting and SolidWorks software. Students will learn to interpret and create complex engineering drawings in both 2D and 3D formats using advanced CAD techniques. Course will draw on the text Interpreting Engineering Drawing, and will allow for students to design their own projects. Course counts as a 4th-year math-related credit; as well as articulated credit at Muskegon Community College. COMPUTER SCIENCE PRINCIPLES (AC, MR) 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: Algebra 1 recommended (not required) 9, 10, 11, 12 *This course is offered with an AP option, and AP credit can be earned for students electing to choose this track. CS Principles is an introduction to the fundamentals of Computer Science. Topics include: how computers work, digital information, basic programming and algorithms, and big data and privacy. This course will follow the code.org curriculum. Students will develop communication and collaboration skills while solving problems, creating computational artifacts, and discussing/writing about technology innovations and impacts on their community, society, and the world. STEM.org-accredited and backed by Microsoft, this course will allow students to gain an appreciation for gaming, learn interpersonal communication skills and logic, and promote health, physical awareness, and mindfulness. Using the High School Esports League (HSEL) platform, students may have the opportunity to participate in global competitions (students may choose to purchase online access and/or additional applications or provide their own). Parent waivers will be required for applications with ESRB ratings over "T". GAMING CONCEPTS 2 (ESPORTS LEAGUE) (AC) .5 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: Gaming Concepts 1 or Teacher approval 9, 10, 11, 12 New Offering! Gaming Concepts is a semester-long expansion of Gaming Concepts 1. Students will gear up for competition held on the High School Esports League platform (students may choose to purchase online access and/or additional applications or provide their own). This course encompasses multiple aspects of digital communication. Students will design materials and implement strategies for communicating and promoting individuals, organizations, and ideas through the use of social media such as Instagram, Linkedln, Snapchat, and Twitter, as well as video production and website design. Students will complete real-world projects to experience planning, creating, editing, and publishing content, and will gain an understanding of advertising strategies, visual and audio design principles, media site management and metrics, website builders, digital editing and more. PROGRAMMING: VISUAL BASIC AND C/C++ (AC, MR) 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: None 9, 10, 11, 12 During the first semester, students will learn the basics of programming and logic through examination of logical programming structures. Using Visual Basic, students will build and design applications for a number of real-world scenarios. Second semester, students will learn the principles of top-down, object- orientation and event-driven programming through lecture and discussion, reading, homework, and in-class labs. Concepts covered include but are not limited to: algorithms, programming methodology, arithmetic operations, I/O, decision structures, looping, arrays, and an intro to databases. Other topics include software development life cycles, testing, and pseudocode. ROBOTICS (AC, MR) 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: CAD, Programming, or Teacher approval 9, 10, 11, 12 This course offers students the opportunity to design, fabricate and program a robot for team participation in VEX Robotics and SeaPerch competitions; as well as independent robotic engineering projects. Emphasis is placed on the problem-solving and teamwork aspects of design and engineering and includes student responsibility for all aspects of the team's functioning, including website development, t-shirt design, video editing, animation, desktop design and publishing, and public relations. 3/15/2021 Reeths-Puffer Curriculum Guide 10, 11, 12 This course includes a thorough review of SAT test content, including mathematics concepts and skills, grammar rules, rhetoric, and reading strategies, with a focus on test-taking strategies that strengthen students' standardized test performance. Students will identify their learning and study styles and will explore time management skills. This course includes several complete SAT practice tests, familiarization with test scoring and the use of scores by colleges and universities. Emphasis is placed on discovering the strategies that improve success for each individual, uncovering the individuals’ priorities for college and other post-secondary decision-making. WEB DEVELOPMENT AND GRAPHIC DESIGN 1 (AC) 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: None 9, 10, 11, 12 Web Development and Graphic Design 1 provides students with foundational skills for web-based communication and marketing. This project-based class explores the application of basic design principles that allow students to conceive user-friendly and visually appealing sites that are customized to specific target audiences and for a variety of purposes, as well as the practical understanding HTML5 and CSS3 programming which will enable them to develop highly-functional sites adaptable to mobile, tablet, and desktop devices. WEB DEVELOPMENT AND GRAPHIC DESIGN 2 (AC) 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: Web Development and Graphic Design 1 10, 11, 12 This course will familiarize students with the differences between HTML, ASP, and PHP web pages, and how to convert HTML pages to function in an ASP or PHP environment, as well as key concepts of programming languages such as Visual Basic and C/C++ and data storage, MSSQL and MySQL. Emphasis is placed on the features of ASP and HP which enable the creation of data-driven, user-enhanced websites. Career Preparation and Exploration CAREER PATHWAYS (AC) .5-1.5 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: 90% or better attendance, good disciplinary record or recommendation of Administrator. 11, 12 Career Pathway Internships Career Pathways is a unique course which allows students to develop an awareness of their natural career preferences and interests. In this class, students will be researching and familiarizing themselves with careers of their choice, and they will ultimately be exposed to innumerous job opportunities through the six Michigan Career Pathways. In addition to learning about various career paths, students will also prepare professional correspondence such as resumes and cover letters, and all students will be introduced to an "elevator pitch" and participate in mock interview sessions. Individuals in this course will also be given job shadowing opportunities, so they may gain first-hand knowledge and learn directly from professionals in their field of interest. PALS (PEER-ASSISTANT LEADERS) AC 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: Teacher recommendation 10, 11, 12 PALS is a course whereby students examine themselves and others as human beings, discovering both strengths and blind spots in the process. Upon completion of this training semester, students will demonstrate their newly acquired skills and carefully honed strengths in a mentorship role with students in our school district. TEACHER READINESS TRAINING (AC) .5 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: 90% or better attendance, good disciplinary record or recommendation of Administrator. 11, 12 Teacher Readiness Training provides students who are interested in careers working with children exposure to elementary and middle school teaching through placement in a Reeths-Puffer classroom. Placements are supervised by R-P staff members and offer daily experience in the tasks of a teacher, including tutoring, individual assessment, small group supervision, and clerical work. Requirements include daily attendance in the assigned placement classroom, documentation of performance and classroom attendance, completion of all tasks assigned by the Supervising Teacher, completion of a semester project lesson, and timely correspondence with the TRT Coordinator. English Language Arts English - 4 credits needed for graduation 9TH GRADE ENGLISH 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: 9 This class is for 9th grade students to better develop their proficiency in writing, language, and literature. 9TH GRADE ENGLISH HONORS 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of 8th grade English, an English GPA of 3.6 or higher, a proficient score on the 8th grade MEAP and a Teacher recommendation. 9 Freshman Honors English is similar to English 9; however, it is designed to move at a faster pace. It will involve the analysis of novels, short stories, drama, and poetry. Basic writing strategies and literary devices will be taught along with in-depth instruction for research projects. Summer reading required. 10TH GRADE ENGLISH 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: English 9 10 English 10 is a year-long course where students engage in reading, writing, speaking, and listening experiences designed to increase the breadth and depth of their understanding of language and literature. Students will examine a variety of literature and informational texts, and they will explore diverse writing and speaking experiences. 10TH GRADE ENGLISH HONORS 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: English 9 Honors, an English GPA of 3.6 or higher or Teacher recommendation. 10 This is an advanced-level class for those students who wish to develop a higher level of proficiency with writing, language and literature at an accelerated and rigorous pace. 3/15/2021 Reeths-Puffer Curriculum Guide 11TH GRADE ENGLISH 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of English 9, 10 11 English 11 is a course designed for all eleventh grade students to develop higher level proficiency with writing, language use, and literature. The course prepares students for their senior English experience, successful completion of the state test (SAT) taken in the spring of their junior year, and their post-secondary education aspirations, primarily through the examination of varied American authors and their writing, as well as a strong focus on the students' utilization of the writing process. 12TH GRADE ENGLISH 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of English 9, 10, 11. 12 The English Language Arts Curriculum is built upon the expectation that students will engage in broad reading and writing experiences which encompass literary texts, non-fiction, and other informational texts as well as film and visual texts. The High School Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts are organized into the following strands: Reading Literature, Reading Informational Text, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language. AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE & COMPOSITION 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of English 9, 10. Teacher approval is required and will be based on previous teacher recommendation and academic record. 11 This is a college-level class for juniors who excel in the study of English and who wish to develop extensive competency in the area of reading and writing through the study of non-fiction and American literature. This rigorous course will move at an accelerated pace and includes additional reading beyond the 11th grade curriculum. College credit may be earned based upon a successful score on the Advanced Placement test taken in May of the junior or senior year. AP ENGLISH LITERATURE & COMPOSITION 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of English 9, 10, 11. Teacher approval is required and will be based on previous teacher recommendation and academic record. 12 This college-level class for seniors will provide further study of English for those who wish to develop extensive competency in the area of reading and writing and to gain confidence in their abilities to succeed at the college level. Special emphasis will be placed on the study of poetry, essays, drama and fiction. College credit may be earned based upon a successful score on the Advanced Placement test taken in May. CREATIVE WRITING 1 .5 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: None 10, 11, 12 * This elective credit does not take the place of the grade level requirement course. Creative writing is designed for the student who would like to discover and develop an honest writing voice while examining many writing resources. The student will also learn how to be a good critic and editor of their own and their fellow classmates' writing. 3/15/2021 Reeths-Puffer Curriculum Guide Creative Writing II is an elective course designed to inspire those who enjoy writing and look to improve upon an already-established creative skill. Students interested in Creative Writing II should have completed the course's introductory counterpart, Creative Writing I, and found that focusing on the elements of writing led to improvement and continued interest in sharpening their writing skills. Creative Writing II students will find continued opportunity to express themselves in non-traditional ways through written word and will work to publish the Reeths-Puffer High School literary component of The Rocket Times, quarterly. The goals in Creative Writing II will focus on extension of writing skills while taking the next step to publication of their work for the enjoyment of others. LYRICS AND LITERARY ANALYSIS .5 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: English 9 10, 11, 12 * This elective credit does not take the place of the grade level requirement course. This one-semester course uses song lyrics as the basis for the study. Just like short stories, drama, and novels, songs carry deeper meaning when we analyze their use of literary devices. This fast-paced, elective class will take a closer look at the words from the songs of multiple genres and time periods. Students will analyze the words themselves to uncover symbolism, theme, euphemism, metaphor, irony, and other literary devices while also researching historical context and artist biography. We'll also consider the album artwork and music videos attached to these songs for even more visual meaning. The course will culminate in an independent presentation incorporating artist research, lyric analysis, and social context to construct meaning. MIXING FILM AND LITERATURE .5 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: None 10, 11, 12 * This elective credit does not take the place of the grade level requirement course. This class will blend film, television, digital footprints, and literature as it takes a deeper look at social concepts. The literary world will be explored through a variety of mixed genres. The thought process will rely heavily upon inferences, while communication will be evident verbally, through written form, and through the research process. MODERN MYTHOLOGY .5 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: None 9, 10, 11, 12 * This elective credit does not take the place of the grade level requirement course. This elective begins with an introduction of common mythological stories and compares their themes, story elements, and story development. Then we'll connect these to the presence of modern-day mythological narratives in popular culture, with a focus on the Hero's Journey. We will analyze how these stories present the power struggle and how they serve as inspiration for real-world heroic action. Special emphasis is placed on the mythological concepts used in author J.R.R. Tolkiens's work, the influences on his writing, the unusual preciseness and complexity of language in the stories, and compelling sub-creation. PUBLIC SPEAKING .5 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: None 9, 10, 11, 12 * This elective credit does not take the place of the grade level requirement course. Public speaking and communications is a class designed to do the following: improve the student's ability to express their ideas through speaking; improve listening ability, gain skills in organization and outlining; and improve library and research skills. In addition to presenting several types of public speeches, students will also practice other communication skills including interviewing, electronic communication, group discussion, and communication analysis. 3/15/2021 Reeths-Puffer Curriculum Guide YEARBOOK/DESKTOP DESIGN (AC) 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: None 10, 11, 12 * This elective credit does not take the place of the grade level requirement course. This course will provide hands-on experience in the craft of desktop design and publishing through the creation of Reeths-Puffer's annual yearbook and numerous other publications. In this class, students will learn to electronically create various brochures, newsletters, certificates, advertisements, and posters. Other course topics that will be explored are the principles of layout, contrast, and balance; copy-writing and editing; photography techniques and effects; and communications and marketing. In addition, students will also be responsible for producing quarterly editions of the school newspaper titled, The Rocket Times, which will hone students' skills in interviewing, researching, designing, writing, and editing. Fine Arts - Theatre Arts Fine Arts or Applied Arts - 1 credit needed for graduation CHILDREN'S THEATRE (AC) 1 CREDIT PREREQUISITE: Audition 10, 11, 12 Children's Theatre is a performance based upper level theatre class. Students are required to audition to become part of the 'Children's Theatre Company'. Students have eight main stage - Rocket Centre - performances each year. The company tours to local elementary schools throughout the year. There are numerous outside/evening/ weekend rehearsals. The class is intensely group oriented and highly creative. Students will learn/participate in all aspects of production/ performance-based theatre: acting, directing, choreography, play writing, stage craft, costuming, lighting and production management. Each health unit incorporates cognitive, affective, and skill objectives into an activity centered program.
