PART 1 - Executive Summary RECNOREC transforms non-hazardous, soiled and unsorted waste into an innovative material replacing advantageously low quality wood or virgin plastic in various outdoor or industrial applications. RECNOREC acts for the planet resources preservation and for local social positive impacts creating territorial-size recovery industry in an inclusive employing state of mind and involving all local stakeholders. Through its social business model commitment, RECNOREC will create and manage a European and then international network of small local processing plants organised around locally produced waste and maximizing societal benefits. Final waste get a new and sustainable life Let’s build together a “positive-waste” Society! RECNOREC is able to bring an efficient solution with rapid growth and immediate impacts to environmental, social and economic major issues such as following 3 challenges: 1st challenge: develop a European solution to plastic waste management. Each European citizen produces each year 250 kg of final waste, orphan of any satisfying treatment solution. Each year, 150 million Tons are buried in landfills. About 75% of these waste are made of plastics and RECNOREC RECYCLES represent a huge dual challenge for Europe: NON RECYCLABLE - Put a quick stop in waste landfilling through European recovery industry. WASTE - Find continental solutions for secondary raw materials, as they are often exported and are hardly remanufactured inside EU. 2nd challenge: preserve natural resources exploited under unacceptable conditions, as EU 2020’s objective is to ensure for the long term the sustainability of wood sector, including to stop or decrease RECNOREC PRODUCT deforestation and implement a sustainable value chain for local inhabitants. € 1.5 billion AS ALTERNATIVE importation of tropical wood coming from Indonesia, Malaysia, Gabon or Cameroun, and TO WOOD wooden furniture coming from China are still contributing to unsustainable forests and AND VIRGIN PLASTIC woodlands management around the world. 3rd challenge: relocate industry to develop sustainable economy. Europe 2020 strategy aims to support EU growth and job creations while including all workers. This means maintaining European international positions and preserve European peace and social model. Environmental issues have become priorities, as they are obviously connected to social issues and economic growth. The economic potential of Social business RECNOREC BUILDS A is been advocated throughout Europe. NETWORK OF LOCAL Relocating jobs and preserving environment needs at the same time: AND INCLUSIVE To re-industrialise countries to produce locally, in a safer and cleaner way PLANTS TO CREATE To reduce imports and promote local products JOBS AND SHARE To fairly share wealth and be more competitive. SUSTAINABLE WEALTH To bring these challenges an efficient and large-scale solution, able to bring together all economic actors fully concerned, Ugoline Soler and Oksana Kurbanova, RECNOREC 2 co-founders were lucky to discover an original and simple technology. This process concerns final waste, orphans from any recovery solution, and usually buried EASY RECOVERY into landfills, and it produces an innovative sustainable material which can transform our PROCESS consumption modes. 100% FINAL WASTE Processing and then consuming this material can solve macrowaste pollution all around the 100% SUSTAINABLE world, will limit natural resources depletion and protect our planet from over consumption. MATERIAL The 2 co-founders were delighted to realize that over those obvious environmental HUGE APPLICATIONS challenges, this industrial project also brings large social benefits. Moreover, it can also be considered as geostrategic, as it acts for social peace and for political sustainable targets achievement. All modern states involved for citizens welfare and Earth health should join us!... Let’s see what this innovation is and how RECNOREC will proceed… Ugoline Soler /+33 (0) 6 29 89 15 47 / ugoline.soler@recnorec.com March 2018 / Page 1/12
This original solution is innovative because of its simultaneous association of essential principles: RECNOREC INNOVATION 1. Soiled+unsortable => Rich waste for RECNOREC: no need for additional sorting cost A SUSTAINABLE PUZZLE 2. Easier and cheaper collection than sorted waste: waste collection remains as it is, bins are brought nearer to RECNOREC plants OF MANY 3. 100% final waste: no addition of any virgin or chemical components (compared to EASY-TO-ACHIEVE current composites or panels) PRINCIPLES 4. Abundant local raw material with a traditional supported cost 5. Recyclable production: RECNOREC product is 100% recyclable in our process 6. Long life-time material: far stronger than most composites and wood panels 7. Reliable and strong machines : our process is a thermodynamic grinding technology 8. Huge potential of applications through various waste recipes and common manufacturing process (we mix final waste from various producers) 9. Social business commitment to empower local economies with their own local resources and needs 10. Open source: the technology is available to promote large-scale final waste recovery worldwide. RECNOREC will develop its own know-how and expertise and share it with social business partners 11. Creativity: processing factories will let their workers design and test new recipes and new shapes to open new doors for the material 12. Affordability to naturally change consumers’ choices to conscious sustainable decisions. These principles are pieces of a sustainable puzzle which will lead to an ambitious and realistic solution. This project is capitalistic with industrial processing based on strong hypothesis and existing market. It proposes a responsible way to produce in a market economy while addressing a clear environmental challenge and maximizing social wealth through the creation of jobs and the strengthening of local economies. RECNOREC traditional B2B recycling industry business model is based on 2 main revenue streams: Upstream: royalties from waste treatment (competitive royalty compared to local incineration and landfill) Today Final waste are already collected and brought to landfill with current royalty from €60 to 120/Ton. Those disposal are obviously far from urban centers and represent high transport cost. Our safe and clean plants will be built close to urban waste facilities. At same global cost for waste producers, RECNOREC royalty will be around €80 to 150/Ton, which stays under current recovery solutions. Downstream: sales of secondary raw material (depending on final uses to be identified during prototype phase). Applications are being studied. We are mapping them following 4 major criteria to select priority for RECNOREC growth: Market size and need: small series or big volumes Unit sale cost: high added-value or low cost material Technical constraints for processing : shaping, manufacturing, distributing chain … Waste regulation and standardization barriers to put on the market: qualifications, analysis, procedural delays… At today small-scale used of the technology in South America, current uses of the material help us define projected sales. Succinctly, identified applications are substituting our material to wood in various outdoor contexts (terraces, fences, outdoor furniture…), in hard-conditions uses (palets, cattle’s housing, scaffold, boxes…) or in sharped outdoor objects (pots, profiles, bricks…). Minimal unit ex-factory sale price are from €20 to 60/m2. To make an idea, In France, wooden based panels market is about €1,5 Billion. RECNOREC material can replace panels such as flywood or particles panels in multiple applications: Low quality products Low –medium quality Medium - High quality Medium - High quality Palets Storage Outdoor floors Wooden seats Ww:105 M units and fences 680 M€ EU: €17 Million (€ 15/unit) € 30 to 60 /Ton Ugoline Soler /+33 (0) 6 29 89 15 47 / ugoline.soler@recnorec.com March 2018 / Page 2/12
As said before, RECNOREC waste transformation process is based on an existing craft-scale technology from South America. It operates through family and empirical know-how, for local final waste. CRAFT TECHNOLOGY A material is already put on the market, as an alternative to precious tropical wood or to EMPIRICAL KNOW-HOW low tropical climate resistance wood. Our Brazilian partners are committed to their FROM SOUTH-AMERICA environment preservation and are involved to help us scale up this non-patented technology to ambitious and global benefits. To achieve industrial scaling up, RECNOREC needs to: WITHIN SUMMER 2018: Characterize European final waste (Axis 2-see below) -DETAILED MARKET Adapt the process parameters to these specific waste (Axis 2) Analyse precisely the material properties (technical and environmental) (Axis 2) STUDY Select prior applications (Axis 1) -R&D WORSHOP Scale up from T200/y to T30 000/y (Axis 3) Assimilate all European rules and constraints in the process and in the operations. (Axis 3) Our project is beginning and is organized on 3 major development axis: 1) « GO-TO-MARKET stage » small material import to test the market through Proves Of 3 DEVELOPMENT AXIS Concept (POC) operations; 1) GO-TO-MARKET 2) « GO-TO-PROCESS stage » to adapt the process to local final waste. We are validating 2) GO-TO-PROCESS our first laboratory machines to produce our own samples. Our workshop will be operated 3) GO-TO-INDUSTRY within Summer-2018. Then we will prepare RECNOREC prototype: a medium-term mini- plant and long-term R&D unit to operate within 2019-S2. Small series will be produced and new applications tested; 3) « GO-TO-INDUSTRY stage »: scaling up will then be designed to build a first industrial-scale plant in 2021, to operate fully 2022. RECNOREC is aware of hard-to-initiate such an industrial project. Europe and France are used to delocating and industry dropping-out and feel uncomfortable to support and assist new entrants. To keep in step with our Social business values, we decided a financial strategy based on maximal independence and security. We try to fund the project beginning with Social business and Circular economy challenges and social and environmental innovation subsidies. Banks are waiting for recurrent turnover to contribute and we try to avoid dilutive equity before our first practical results. Within Autumn-2018, we plan to ask for citizen commitment via crowfunding and love money. RECNOREC is 2017 winner of LaFabriqueAviva Challenge: Aviva €50 000 award and BFM communication were a nice launching for the project. After its 1st industry-scale plant, RECNOREC aims to develop a large network of local-scale plants, building sustainable partnerships with local actors. Their obvious operational values and fair wealth-sharing motivations will be major criteria to contract together. As shown next page, the activity is quickly profitable: added-value and earns will be reintroduced into the company through R&D and inclusion, and will contribute to various depollution operation through the world (such as garbage patches that are one of the founders’ biggest concerns). Funding non-profit depolluting organizations as consumers’ commitment for the Planet. Employment is a major issue for RECNOREC. High-level and low-skilled jobs administrative SMALL PLANTS FOR and technical, for all king of workers, in an inclusive state of mind. Social diversity to MAXIMUM JOB contribute to living together. We decided to build small-size recovery plants to maximize CREATIONS job creations, compared to disposal and incineration. ALL TYPES OF JOBS Today Greentech is considered the best source of employment growth as it is rarely PROMOTE INCLUSION delocalizable. Each RECNOREC plant will create around 30 jobs to transform the 30% of a AND DIVERSITY 200 000 inhabitants final waste production. In France, 300 plants could emerge in the next EMPLOYMENT 10 years. Why 30%? Only to preserve slow traditional recovery increase and waste production decrease. See next page our technical and financial projection to achieve these goals. Find in the table below some precisions about RECNOREC business opportunity: keeping affordable royalty and unit sales, RECNOREC converts Tons into M2, with a huge multiplying factor. Final waste become a real high-added value product. With soft hypothesis about sales prices and 1st plant load increase, find below RECNOREC projected growth. Later on, 1st plant will have confirmed its scalability and RECNOREC will organize its industrial deployment, in France, Europe and everywhere Final waste and natural resources depletion are becoming a real concern for public and private managers. 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 1-Opportunity 2-Go-to-Market Feasibility + Sales dev Sales development Sales dev POC (import) (own small production) (indus prod) Job creations 1 fte 3 fte 3 fte 4 fte 8 fte Investments Sales 170m2 10 k€ 350m2 20 k€ 500m2 30 k€ 500m2 30 k€ 3-Go-to-Process (Prototype) Workshop Design Operating Waste & App° Job creations 0,25 fte 2,5 fte 5 fte 5,5 fte 8 fte Investments 30 k€ 800 k€ 80 k€ 200 k€ Sales 100Tt=600m2 400T=2 400m2 500T=3 000m2 500T=3 000m2 110 k€ 440 k€ 550 k€ 550 k€ 4-Go-to-Industry (1st plant) Projected timeline and growth are still indicative Scale up design Building Operating data: current feasibility study will achieve more Job creations 1,5 fte 2,5 fte 30 fte reliability. Beyond technical and financial issues, co-founders and all RECNOREC team are committed to build a social and societal project. On one side, we aim to make consumers’ choices MAKE SUSTAINABLE evolve towards sustainable and responsible decisions. On the other side, we want to prove - AFFORDABLE FOR ALL another industrial way is possible: more local, fairer, - EASY TOWARD SUSTAINABLE accepted by citizens and committing them. Both to make CONSUMING - OBVIOUS traditional non sustainable business unacceptable even for and OPERATING “economic” reasons. Yes, RECNOREC team is fully optimistic about the collective capacity to change course. That’s why we intend to change customers approach to their purchases. First through pedagogy about waste management, recycling and secondary raw materials, second through transparency and collaborative governance with its stakeholders, and last but not least through the production of our material. This last point implies working with independent partners to build reliable comparative documents about available materials on the market: as we want to offer affordable high technical and environmental quality for all budgets, people must now choose to consume within their social values. INFORM and INVOLVE CITIZENS Local production, local waste, transparency, safe products, right price, social business and PEDAGOGY & collective responsibility are some of RECNOREC arguments to change individual and TRANSPARENCY private customers’ consumption mode. RECNOREC ambition relies on a solid and growing team. Ugoline and Oksana, the 2 co-founders are organizing a polyvalent team to achieve this program. Various contributors complete their backgrounds, as detailed in Part 3 (Team). 1) The co-founders: technical, entrepreneurial and innovative profile (Ugoline) completed with multicultural and international business developer (Oksana). After half carrier in waste management, Ugoline wanted to commit to more efficient action. She applied and then graduate from Paris-Dauphine Social business management to feel confident and reliable to engage this entrepreneurship adventure. 2) The future staff: B2B, business and patent skills (Hélène), waste operating manager (Georges) 3) The direct partners: process expert (Jairo), recycling and materials expert (Neo-Eco), brazilian partner (Bioecotek), marketing partner (Ozagora) 4) Some specific partners: EU funding (Kol Trading), Material analysis (NOBATEK) 5) Our sponsors: various sponsors complete the team skills around plastic industry, insurances, industry operating, accounting, lawyer, material analysis… 6) And for sure our future consumers, early adopters who help us test the material on the French market. Each of them have decided to contribute to high social value projects and RECNOREC is for them a perfect challenge. They are enthusiastic and give precious advices to the co-founders. They also bring their network to RECNOREC. Some other future staff are to join RECNOREC, as soon as funds are completed. Operating a social business means being aware of its benefits and impacts through MEASURABLE BENEFITS transparent and sustainable indicators. Our Quality plan is not completely defined yet but 1 Ton processed we start identifying how to assess RECNOREC numerous impacts. See non-exhaustive = 1 Ton avoided in environmental, economic and social impacts on table in Annex (Assessing RECNOREC landfill impacts). An obvious example deals with the activity itself, as 1 Ton of final waste treated = 1 Ton Material avoids 1 Ton landfill disposal, produces 1 Ton of recyclable material and preserves 1 Ton produced of natural resources, such as wood or fuel (virgin plastic resins). Moreover, we want to promote all depollution non-profit projects through free-royalty for =1 Ton natural resource their waste collection operations. preserved RECNOREC is a solid and ambitious project, which needs all possible contributions to 30 jobs/30 000 Tons become a collective success and a Citizen’s agenda. Our targets are France, then Europe SOCIAL BUSINESS values and then any committed territory for sustainable development. ZERO WASTE ACTIVITY Building a “positive-waste” society … … consuming more waste to grow than producing, is now possible. Earth is waiting to get clean again. PART 2 – Interviews with stakeholders 1) PUBLIC MANAGERS AND CITIZENS (7) Anne P, Deputy managing director for business development at Communauté d’Agglomération de SQY (France-78): « RECNOREC project connects sustainable development stakes to economic benefits. That’s exactly what a dynamic territory such as Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines needs. We are proud to host it in our incubator. » Sébastien L, Student (France-91): « I just come back from Beijing University. I feel China’s decision of stopping plastic waste import is fair as we must be responsible for finding solution to recycle all plastics waste included soiled and mixed. It is necessary for the planet. I’m proud saying that my mother is working on such an ambitious project! » Jean-Louis D-P, President of Coredemm, NGO for plastic waste collection from natural areas (France-14): « Our association is looking for partners to recycle the waste we collect. Would RECNOREC be interested to talk about a partnership? » Claire B, promotor of « les Ressourceurs », NGO for reuse and recycling (France-78) « I met your project through Versailles newspaper. We would like to know more about a partnership with RECNOREC. Let’s meet! » Hélène R, CEO of Takoma (Digital Learning, IT applications) 15 M€, 70 persons: « As mother of 4 children and founder of Takoma, I am really focused on social values and workers welfare. According to me, the main additional value of RECNOREC is the local implementation for little production plants. It takes into account social and economic aspects, and jobs creation. In all aspects, this innovation is amazing. According to me, it could be called positive proximity! » Bertrand R, owner of a house with garden (France-91): « I’m planning to invest for a new outdoor area in my garden. I’m very curious of what kind of products I’m going to choose. Same logic as Bio for food! I could agree to pay about 15% higher a sustainable furniture for my new terrace. » Mireille L. citizen (France-17): “I discovered Recnorec thanks to a TV broadcast and facebook. It was really good surprise for me with hopeless. My passion are sealing and surfing. I am very aware of the effects of human behavior, especially disappointed by all these plastics waste in the oceans all around the world without any solution to destroy them. RECNOREC could help the “7th continent” to disappear… » 2) MEDIAS AND SCHOOLS (4) Laure G, founder and CEO of MonQuotidienAutrement.com, website « Launched in 2012, Mon quotidien autrement is an editorial website and a weekly newsletter opened to a large public. Our ambition is to promote a sustainable and healthy everydaylife to our 120 000 readers. Recnorec is exactly the type of innovation they are interested in. People are waiting for French initiatives solving big environmental issues. » Souad M, Training officer for ITESCIA Sustainable management School (Paris) « Madam, your innovation for final waste recovery caught my attention. I would like to talk about a pedagogic partnership. Thanks in advance. » Stéphane Soumier, BFM TV - Good Morning Business, extract TV interview 2017/09/13: Concluding the interview: « Thank you Ugoline co-founder of RECNOREC! I’m sure we are going to hear a lot about you pretty soon. We are going to follow you and you will come back at BFM Business to speak about RECNOREC latest developments. » Frédéric Simottel, BFM TV - Start & Co, extract TV interview 2018/02/20: Concluding the interview: « Thank you Ugoline and RECNOREC, you give hope to all people who are disappointed about all these non-recyclable waste. Even me, I thought some of them were 100% recyclable but not at all as you showed to us. » http://bfmbusiness.bfmtv.com/b84aca66-18b3-4676-bafe-fba7e24785f7 Ugoline Soler /+33 (0) 6 29 89 15 47 / ugoline.soler@recnorec.com March 2018 / Page 7/12
3) WASTE PRODUCERS (4) Pierre R, Production manager at Plast’Emball, packaging films Company (France-28): « About 10% of our total production of plastics packaging is brought to landfill. Our plastics products for packaging are more and more complex with multi layers. We don’t find any recycling solution compliant with this type of polymers. We unsuccessfully tried some solutions, so we were very impressed to discover RECNOREC and we agree to deal with. » Laurence D, Operating manager for municipal waste sorting plant (France-78): « Sorting is very difficult to manage for our inhabitants due to the increasing complexity of packaging. 20% of our municipal sorted waste are thrown to incineration. » Anthony M, CEO of Décondi’Environnement (France-18) : « When we have to put out packaging from food, drinks or other consumer goods, all soiled packaging are hard to recycle if not washed. RECNOREC solution could avoid this step and offer an efficient recycling solution for these waste. » Jean-Luc P, Philadelphia Brand Manager (Consumer goods industry): « While negotiating with the national retail chains for new listing, sustainable issues takes big part. Packaging innovation is part of innovation, through sophisticated packaging. Yes, telling our national purchasers we have a solution to recycle our sophisticated packaging could be the best thing that we have even heard!” 4) DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS (2) Natacha K, Business and marketing manager at Nobatek, research center, (France- 64): « Nobatek is involved with RECNOREC to study building applications thanks to with our expertise in sustainable building ». Christophe D, CEO at Neo-Eco (France-59): « RECNOREC innovation is unique: its recyclable technology doesn’t use any chemical components and the potential of applications for the material is really huge. We will achieve end-of-waste-status certification for them ». 5) MATERIAL CUSTOMERS (8) Olivier D, Garden designer (France-47): « This material is going to have an exceptional success if it delivers all the characteristics given because all the others products on the market have low cycle life and deliver a non-satisfying carbon foot print. » Christian J, Farmer (France-57): « The wood which we usually use to store our cereal is fragile, sensitive to the humidity and facilitates the development of parasite. We are very open minded to test new material for cereal-storage and cattle housing. » André D, Deputy Sales manager at Transport 2000 (France-91): « Today many customers wonder about the origin of our wood. The reports on the recycling do not bring us a good advertising and depreciate our image, as well as the communication on deforestation in Brazil. Moreover wooden pallets are forbidden in the cooled storage by Food industry regulation. Yes RECNOREC could be a good initiative, it depends on the sales price, we need to be competitive at all levels. » Jean-François C, CEO at Urbiocompost (France-57) : « We agree to launch a first test to check the esthetic and resistance of this material for our biowaste-containers. » Stéphane T, Outdoor Architect (France-78): « I’m waiting for a whole pallet delivery to test the material as outdoor garden floor. I would be proud to be involved in this sustainable project. » François G, CEO at Espace Durable, urban outdoor furniture (France-44): « We really need material such as RECNOREC on the market and I’m waiting for the first production run to make some samples of furniture and littoral grounds. » Nathalie L, Head Buyer at Leroy Merlin (France): « Success for this product? Why not! It will fully depend on price. We sell our woodbased panel from €20 to 40/m2. Some customers accept to pay higher price for outdoor furniture especially for high quality, but we are not so much positioned on that. Leroy Merlin negociates high volumes at the lowest price thanks to our purchase department. » Ugoline Soler /+33 (0) 6 29 89 15 47 / ugoline.soler@recnorec.com March 2018 / Page 8/12
Eric O and Kamel S, independent Business developers (Israel): « We want to start importing your material, next year we will tell you market acceptance. Then we want to install and operate our own local production for local final waste. We absolutely need European standards for material and process.» 6) INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS PARTNERS (5) François J, Architect in International Project for Africa (Building & Construction Industry): « I’m working on international architectural projects in Africa. More and more projects require sustainable specifications and need guarantees for low carbon foot-print including building materials. Implementing locally RECNOREC technology in small towns in Africa (Algeria, Senegal, and Ivory for what I know very well) could be part of the solution. Proposing locally sustainable material should bring additional value to our projects in Africa. » Silvar B, owner of Waste collection Company (Estonia): « I’m looking for innovative waste solution for my country. Your technology seems very adaptive to mixed waste. Can you give me information about waste, operational cost and material market? Thank you. » Ulan T, private equity, (Kazakhstan): « Is that technology reliable? Please can you send me complete process video from detailed waste to final material? Can you translate in Russian? Do you have already operating plant to visit? My customers will need to come and visit.” Igor T, private equity (Russia): « If we conclude, we will prefer to build a Joint-Venture, because we have the guarantee for machines, maintenance and we can conserve exclusivity in Russia. » Karen H, CEO of Sustainable services, Industrial waste collection company (Quebec): « We can send you samples of our customers non-recyclable waste. Please make tests and send us back the material samples. We can test them here in Canada. Can you take videos? If samples are interesting, we can send you a small team to discuss further. » Ugoline Soler /+33 (0) 6 29 89 15 47 / ugoline.soler@recnorec.com March 2018 / Page 9/12
