A Note From Us Celebrating Earth, the environment and all of its wonderful diverse community within it, the Humber Recovery College recognises that just like our planet, we are each more than the sum of our parts. Taking inspiration from the strength, diversity and resilience of nature, the Recovery College hopes to encourage, support and empower its students to recognise the very same qualities in themselves. Recovery is a journey. Whoever you are, whatever you do, wherever you’re from... we welcome you into our inclusive Recovery College community. 4
About Us The Humber Recovery College uses an educational model and a focus on lived experience and personal strengths to promote good mental wellbeing within the community and to challenge stigmas associated with mental health. Our college proudly welcomes people from all walks of life and backgrounds, regardless of if they identify with experiencing mental health difficulties or not. Students, tutors with lived experience, mental health professionals, peer-support workers, volunteers and students co-productively work together to design and deliver original and innovative workshops and courses. Together, we aim to empower and support people who are experiencing or have experienced mental difficulties, those who support them and those who have an interest in keeping themselves mentally and emotionally well. We work to the three central Principles of Recovery... Hope, Opportunity and Control We promote the principle of ‘Hope’ by: Supporting individuals to recognise and develop their own strengths, talents, skills and resources whilst developing new abilities and understanding Helping people to find their own ways of making sense and find meaning in their experiences Encouraging and supporting individuals to share their stories and contribute their skills and knowledge to help and inspire others with similar experiences Demonstrating that there is a life worth living beyond illness through celebrating the achievements of our students, the Recovery College team and partners with lived experience Believing in our students and ‘holding’ their hope until they can too believe that a decent life and future is possible for themselves Supporting individuals to recognise and develop their own strengths, talents, skills and resources whilst developing new abilities and understanding We promote the principle of ‘Opportunity’ by: Providing free, helpful and inspiring courses and workshops across Hull and East Riding that have no eligibility criteria Promoting course/workshop co-design, co-production and co-facilitation Building partnerships and working with partner organisations and groups to increase the types of opportunities and communities open to you through us Encouraging you to recognise that you are a valued member not only of the Recovery College community, but also within your wider communities Providing the opportunity to get involved and shape the Humber Recovery College as an idea-giver, volunteer, peer-support or tutor (see page 19 for more information) We promote the principle of ‘Control’ by: Supporting you to find your own purposes and direction in life by helping you to discover what is important to you so you can find new dreams and ambitions, deciding on what sort of help you might need to follow your goals Helping you to become an expert in your own self-care and work out the ways of managing your difficulties so they don’t get in the way of you pursuing your goals Offering tools and identifying options which could help you manage your mental wellbeing (alongside any clinical interventions) in a way that best suits you Encouraging you to recognise your existing strengths, talents, skills and resources to help you identify how they can best support you in your recovery Helping you recognise and find ways to navigate other difficulties which could impact on your recovery (such as socio-economic or financial obstacles, life events or inequalities)

Where can I find the Recovery College? FAQs The Recovery College is not in one building. Instead, courses are delivered in partnered venues within the community across Hull and East Riding using a ‘Hub and Spoke’ model. Do I need to be referred into the College? Is it like an adult day care service? The Recovery College does not take referrals as we are not a service, although community projects and healthcare professionals are encouraged to signpost people our way. It is your decision entirely to become a student, to enrol and determine the course(s) you want to do. We are not a day care service - students spend time with us as just that… students! Students are free to come and go on/offsite and the tutors/volunteers are not responsible for them outside of the classroom environment. Who can access the Recovery College? We are proud to not have an eligibility criteria when it comes to accessing our courses; you do not need to be ‘recovering’ from illness to benefit from these courses as they can contribute to your own personal sense of good mental wellbeing. Is this like school/college? Yes, in so much as you’re learning and you’re a student who has enrolled with us. We operate in informal, safe, adult educational spaces where mutual respect is important. How much do these courses cost? We do not charge for our courses. However, we do ask for £1 per person per enrolment, (you can enrol onto up to 5 courses per term) which helps cover some of the costs of processing enrolments. Some courses also require us to purchase extra resources so we also ask students to contribute a small amount towards these costs - details of these material costs can be found within the course descriptions. These courses must be paid for upon enrolment and are normally non-refundable (feel free to ring us to check if there’s spaces before enrolling) as you will not be enrolled without it. How do I enrol? Simple! You complete an enrolment form and send it back to us along with the £1 enrolment fee and any course material charges. For more information, please refer to the ‘How To Enrol’ section on page 8. How can I pay? You can pay in person (e.g. at enrolment days), by cheque made out to ‘HUMBER TEACHING FOUNDATION TRUST’ (not ‘Recovery College’), postal order (we advise against sending cash in the post) or over the telephone to pay by card (once we’ve received your enrolment form through the post/email). You will NOT be enrolled onto any courses until full payment has been received by the college. What will I need to bring? Will there be refreshments? Although the tutors will provide the materials required for the course, it may be helpful to bring a pen, a notepad and a folder for your notes. Refreshments are your responsibility, so they are generally not available at any of our venues so please bring enough drinks and any snacks you require. Other courses will specify that you wear suitable clothing/ footwear, and others may invite you to bring some of your own materials. Please make sure you come prepared for the session (please find further information within individual course descriptions). Are there parking facilities? We aim to provide venues that are accessible by public transport, and where possible, ensure there are free or paid parking facilities onsite or nearby. Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust is proud to provide free parking at all of its sites. It is advisable that you plan ahead. Any parking fees are the responsibility of the vehicle owner. I want to attend a course but I’d prefer it if someone I knew came with me... Is that ok? Of course! Because of our inclusivity principles, anyone can attend Recovery College courses so long as they enrol. So, if you want someone to come with you, get them to enrol alongside you as a student. However, we ask that anyone accompanying students actively participate in the course activities too! 14

‘Living With...’ series People can often be afraid or embarrassed to talk to others about their mental health difficulties or their feelings about certain things. You may have a diagnosis from a mental health professional or question something about yourself but you’re not entirely sure what it means. Or, perhaps you care for someone who has a diagnosis or has opened up about themselves and you’re not sure how to best support them. Any which way, it can be helpful to talk to other people who know what you’re going through, learn facts, discuss coping strategies and how to challenge and reduce stigmas and find ways to move forward in your recovery from people who have also ‘been there’ themselves. At the Recovery College we’re very much in support of challenging stigma, promoting diversity and speaking and learning from lived experience, so we’re proud to offer a series of workshops which aim to bring people together in a safe, supportive space to navigate the challenges that we might face. These workshops are co-produced and facilitated by people who are experts by their lived experience. The workshops we are running this prospectus are: Living with... Anxiety Living with... Bipolar Living with... Borderline Personality Disorder Living with... Dementia (and things you can do to help) with Wendy Mitchell (award winning author!) Living with... Depression Living with... & Understanding My Sexuality Further details on all of these courses, workshops and groups can be found within the main course description pages. 16
Man Stuff Season When looking at the data from last term, we noticed that we have twice as many women attending our courses than we do men. We want more men to join our caring and supportive Recovery College community, which is why we have committed to providing male-orientated courses, workshops, tasters and groups in safe, male-only spaces. We hope that by encouraging men to talk to each other over shared interests it will help them feel less alone and discover that they don’t have to ‘man up’ to be a top bloke! The Man Stuff Team invite you to try some martial arts, have a kick about (despite being rubbish at it), play games, admire football strips, talk tech, meditate, admire nature and much, much more. Simply enrol onto them like any other course. The following courses, workshops and tasters are available to MEN ONLY: Boxing for Health – Build up your confidence and let off some steam with Acho for these 2 male-only sessions (…did we mention Acho is a Shaolin disciple? He might even teach you some moves...). If you like it, you can then join up to the free weekly gym sessions there. One Man’s Struggle to Play Footy Despite Being Useless At It – Join Mike in a series of monthly anecdotal chats (and potential kick-abouts so wear your trainers) about the benefits of getting up off the sofa and doing a bit of physical exercise before allowing the conversation to flow to wherever it goes. Mike will also tell you how to get involved with the Humber Teaching NHS Trust football team (who play in the East Riding County FA’s Inclusion League). Tech Stuff – The Recovery College resident whizz kids Michael and Acho invite students to bring their tech (phones, tablets, laptops etc.) and learn how to get the most out of them. There will also be desktop computers available (and a PlayStation) to do your own thing and develop your techy skills whether you’re afraid of the mouse or a master programmer. Meditation and Tai Chi Taster Combo Session – Find your inner Zen with Acho for this relaxing two hour session. If you like it, you can then enrol onto Acho’s weekly sessions. Three Lions on a Shirt – Les, Founding Editor of Hull City Kits, invites you to join him in exploring the history of England’s national teams playing kits across two 90 minute sessions. Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (YWT) East Park Nature Walk – Come along and explore the local wildlife with Andy from the YWT before having a chat over a cuppa at the East Park Café. Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (YWT) Flamborough Day Trip – Join Andy from the YWT and Les on a fantastic day out to Flamborough. A great spot for birdwatching and soaking up the best nature has to offer. Students must be physically able to walk long distances and climb steep steps unaided. Further details on all of these courses, workshops and groups can be found within the main course description pages.

Volunteering The Voluntary Services Team organise volunteer placements across Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, which includes being a peer support worker or volunteer within the Humber Recovery College. A big part of being a volunteer is talking and listening, encouraging and making people feel welcomed and supported. Although volunteering is not the same as work experience it can provide a valuable insight in to NHS work environments, enabling you to improve your skills and knowledge. Other benefits of being a volunteer can include improving confidence, meeting new people and even improving your mental health. Volunteers need to go through the Trust’s usual recruitment processes including a DBS check (which the Trust will pay for) and you will also be required to attend a one day induction before you can start your chosen role (either with the Recovery College or elsewhere). If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a volunteer please enrol onto one of our ’Volunteer Information Sesh’ events (see page 52) or contact Sam at the Volunteer Services Team via: 01482 477862 or HNF-TR.voluntaryservices@nhs.net You can also get further information from our website: www.humber.nhs.uk/working-at-humber/volunteering Useful Numbers There are lots of organisations that can support you alongside your learning at the Recovery College. Course Descriptions We pride ourselves on producing and delivering a broad range of both practical and theoretical courses across Hull and East Riding with our valued partners. Our courses may help our students take control over their lives, manage and understand mental health, help to learn and/or develop skills and/or promote good physical health and wellbeing. Our workshops and courses aim to give students a forum in which to develop understanding from one another in terms of understanding and contextualising mental health. They aim to build confidence, self-esteem and emotional wellbeing by encouraging individuals to develop their strengths and to try new things moving forwards. We hope to reduce social isolation by creating a peer-supportive community within and surrounding the Recovery College. Boxing for Health Come along to Vulcan Gym each Thursday during term time (excluding December 2018) and work towards a fitter version of you! For the first hour, have open access to free weights and weight machines to build your strength before moving to the cardio gym for the second hour where you can use the cardio machines and even learn to box. The programme is flexible so you can do both or either hours – it’s up to you. You can also access personal trainers and get advice on how best to develop your physical fitness and towards the goals that you set for yourself. Students can join at any time (dependant on space availability - ring the office to check) so it doesn't matter if you’ve already missed some. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear and bring plenty of drinks to stay hydrated! Available 2018 and 2019. Boxing for Health (Man Stuff) These two men-only sessions of the course described above aims form part of the Recovery College ’Man Stuff Season’. The two December dates are for men only (male students who have already enrolled on the main Boxing for Health course can also attend these sessions). Available 2018. 36
Build Your Self Esteem This two session course will see you identifying the potential causes of low self-esteem before examining ways of challenging negative thoughts through a variety of practical activities and group discussion. Learn to apply methods that may help build self-esteem in day-to-day life in a supportive, positive and solution-focused setting. This is not a ’quick fix’ course (in other words, you won’t automatically feel better after completing it) but you will have spent some time challenging your thoughts and reflecting on your qualities which can help you work towards a more positive outlook on. Available 2019. Coping with Emotions Coping with Emotions aims to help students improve their self-management skills by providing an interactive course to increase knowledge on emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness and interpersonal relationships. This course is not therapy but an educational course combining taught input, group and independent work and as a group we can generate ideas for new ways to think and behave. We think about concepts such as boundaries, managing overwhelming emotions, self-destructive coping and conflict in relationships. This is a high-intensity and emotive course that may not be suitable for everyone; students would need to attend the full 9 weeks and complete weekly self-help homework to benefit the most. Previous students have found that the course can be difficult due to its nature of talking about dealing with difficult emotions, but being part of the group has been as helpful and restorative as the content of the course itself. Available 2019. Christmas Card Making Enjoy a relaxing morning making cards for your loved ones this Christmas. No card-making experience is necessary; just turn up, see which card-making materials inspire you and get crafting with the support of friendly and knowledgeable tutors. A variety of materials will be provided on the day, but if you have anything of your own you would like to use or share with others, feel free to bring it along. This course has a materials cost of £3, to be paid in advance at the point of enrolment. Available 2018.
Crafting for Wellbeing This course is very flexible in terms of structure with the core intention of students sharing skills and knowledge to inspire projects amongst themselves. Students are encouraged to bring their own projects/ideas to work on, or learn something new from one another or through our tutors. Students are welcome to bring their own materials but we will have a supply to work with. We ask that students pay £5 towards the purchasing of crafting materials and resources. Students can join at any time (dependant on space availability - ring the office to check) so it doesn't matter if you’ve already missed some. Available 2018 and 2019. Creative Writing Circle Do you write? Or want to learn how to express yourself through writing? This informal, student- led writing circle aims to bring budding writers together every other week to help develop the creative writing skills used in journaling, story telling, poetry and more. Students are encouraged to offer one another support and constructive feedback within this safe and open writing space. The long session time allows students the space to sit and write but to also have any relevant discussions within the group or explore the library to help further their practice. Learn from one another and the tutor through discussions and activities about things like character development, plot-planning and using language effectively. You will also be required to develop work in-between sessions. Please bring your own notebook/folder/paper and writing materials (or a laptop if that’s how you prefer to write). No previous creative writing experience is required (but you must be able to read and write) and as long as you can understand your own handwriting, you don’t need to worry about spelling. Students can join at any time (dependant on space availability - ring the office to check) so it doesn't matter if you’ve already missed some. Available 2018 and 2019. 38
Crochet for Beginners Have you every fancied learning to crochet or have you tried (and given up) or want a refresher? If so, then this course is just for you! Enrol onto this beginner’s course and meet some passionate tutors who really know the benefits of this amazing craft. In an informal atmosphere you will learn basic crochet stitches in preparation to complete a simple crochet project. You will be able to practice with our hooks and wool during the first session with the expectation that you will purchase your own during the course (just speak to the tutors who can point you in the right direction). This course has a £3 materials cost which will help cover the cost of the wool during the initial sessions. Available 2019. Crochet for Improvers Are you an experienced crocheter or a beginner who can already make a granny square? Do you want to join a group of like-minded people who share your passion for crochet? Bring along your own project and materials to work on in this informal and relaxing environment. The tutors will encourage and facilitate the sharing of ideas and techniques in developing your crochet skills. This course has a £3 materials cost which will help cover the cost of spare wool and other materials during the course. Available 2019. Drawing If you can make a squiggle, you can learn to draw. Stretch your understanding of what drawing is or could be by developing both your technical skills and ability to experiment, play and think through mark-making in this relaxed and supportive setting. Led by an experienced and encouraging artist, you will be led through a series of practical drawing exercises where the only expectation is that you give it a go. The best way to get better at drawing is to ‘do’, so students will also be required to develop work in between sessions. There is a materials cost of £3 for this course as some drawing materials will be provided (but feel free to bring your own too!). Students are expected to bring their own sketchbook to work in (A3 spiral bound sketchbooks with a hard back are recommended). Available 2019.
Emotional Support Following Any Loss (with Cruse Bereavement Care) Emotional Support Following Loss has been written for the Recovery College by an experienced volunteer with the charity Cruse Bereavement Care. The aim is to help people who have experienced any loss which caused emotional challenges. This will include help following death (not including funeral arrangements or benefits). Students will consider the emotional issues experienced following any significant loss in a confidential group setting, including issues such as how caring at the end of life can affect people and what may help and consider some of the challenges experienced after death and working towards building a new life. Available 2018 and 2019. Exploring My Values (and what’s important to me) If someone was to ask you what your values are, could you answer? What even are ‘values’? This workshop aims to help students learn about the importance of values before reflecting on what’s important. Find ways to align elements of your life to your personal core values through group discussions and activities. The more we understand ourselves, the more self-aware we become and the easier it is to live a happier and more fulfilled life. Available 2019. Find Your Inner Drag Persona (with Fuel) Join Fuel’s talented resident drag performers for a fabulous afternoon of Halloween-themed fun and creativity during our October half-term. In an informal and inclusive atmosphere, this stigma-busting workshop supports, enables and encourages students to look at their identity and sexuality and gives them an opportunity to remove gender stereotyping from clothing and find confidence through make-up in an attitude free space. People of all backgrounds and genders are welcome but you MUST be aged 18 or over to attend. Available 2018. 40
