Programme of Events Virtual Shetland Wool Week 2021 Saturday 25 September - Sunday 3 October
Hello, and thank you for supporting Shetland Wool Week in 2021!
Welcome to the Virtual Shetland Wool Week programme of events – we are so delighted to be
Bringing Shetland Wool Week to You for 2021. As part of your Membership you will get exclusive
access to the SWW series of films, especially commissioned for our virtual festival 2021, as well as
masterclasses from Elizabeth Johnston, and some special audio recordings celebrating Shetland wool.

With your purchase of a Membership, we are also delighted to offer you an early-bird preview of the
programme of talks, films, music and workshops organised by our partners, the tutors and experts
who would usually offer similar events in the physical space of Shetland Wool Week.

The tickets will go live and on general sale through Eventbrite on Saturday 4th of September 2021 at
16:00 (BST). There is limited capacity for many of the events, so having that few days advance
knowledge, could be handy!

Registering in advance on Eventbrite may help to make the process easier – you can visit:
www.eventbrite.com and click on ‘Sign In’ in the top righthand corner, then look for Sign Up for
Eventbrite (you may need to scroll down the page).

All events will be online, some will be pre-recorded, some will be live, and some will be a mixture of
both. The tutors will be using either Zoom or YouTube for this experience, and for those more
interactive workshops that require you to do some preparation before attending, tutors will be in
touch with you beforehand to make sure you have time to prepare for your workshop.

For the less interactive events, you will receive a link to these events by email after you have purchased
your ticket and when they have Premiered on Youtube, you will be able to access the content, any
time during the ‘Week’ that fits in with your schedule.

                                                 Enjoy!
                                                                      The Shetland Wool Week Team

Virtual Shetland Wool Week Exclusive Content
For nine days from 25 September – 3 October, we’ll be bringing Shetland Wool Week to you
through the new ‘Shetland Wool Week Film Series’ – films produced throughout the spring
and summer months. The films are a real treat, and we give huge thanks to everyone who
has generously given up their time to be filmed and share such amazing insights and skills.
The films vary in length from 5 – 60 minutes each and at least one film will Premier online
each day via YouTube (link to follow). You can view them as they go live throughout Virtual
SWW, or revisit and watch them at your leisure as they will be available exclusively from SWW
Members until the end of December 2021.

The films include:

Wilma Malcolmson: Inspiring future generations
SWW Patron, Wilma Malcolmson is inspired to ‘bring the joy of knitting to everyone’. She
travels extensively to share her skills and well as teaching young children closer to home
through her role with the Shetland Peerie Makkers.

A Guide to Rooing
Carol Christiansen on rooing, an almost lost method of producing the best wool for hand-
spinning. Watch as Carol demonstrates how to roo Shetland sheep, Clover, of the Bradley
Croft, Gletness, separating the old and new fleece at a natural point, leaving the skin side of
the old fleece with its finest ends, and the new fleece with its tips intact. Curator at the
Shetland Museum, Carol is a mine of information, and shares interesting historical facts
throughout this beautiful film.

Preparing Shetland Fleece for Handspinning
With Shetland Guild of Spinners, Knitters, Weavers and Dyers spinning expert Sue Arthur. A
visit to Unst and a meeting with spinner Mary Jean Peterson some 40 years ago gave Sue the
spinning bug. In this film she invites us to her home at Cuckron Croft and explains the beauty
of fleece preparation right through to spinning and knitting.

Weaving with Edina Szeles
Edina Szeles is a textile artist and designer who uses the environment to inspire her textile
designs. Join Edina at her home in Bressay as she chats about the inspiration, the process,
patterns and textures behind her stunning woven textiles.
Colour Blending Inspiration with Wilma Malcolmson
SWW patron, Wilma Malcolmson makes colour blending look effortless – as is evident in her
beautiful knitwear designs and the Wool Week Crofter’s and Katie’s Kep. From her studio,
Wilma explains how she takes colour inspiration from her surroundings, be it nature, a picture
or a piece of crockery, and how she’s always on the lookout for the small touches to help
bring her Fair Isle patterns alive.

A Shetland Dye Garden
Take a tour through a Shetland dye garden and see the subtle palette of shades that lend
themselves so well to Fair Isle knitting. Natural wool dyer, Bunchy Casey, explains the magical
alchemy of dying yarn from plants grown in her garden and from around Shetland. From her
kitchen studio she explains techniques and tips required for natural dyeing with wool.
Bunchy’s dye knowledge and love of nature is both infectious and inspiring.

Stoorbra Socks, Fair Isle Knitting and Shetland
Shetlander knitwear designer, Alison Rendall has been knitting since childhood and her long
held interest in Fair Isle pattern and colours is evident throughout her designs. Here she
explains the creative process behind her work and how the Shetland landscape and changing
seasons subliminally influence her choice of colours. Alison has enjoyed seeing her ‘Stoorbra
Sock’ design, a pattern in the SWW Annual 2020, come to life. She describes some of the
challenges in perfecting her design, and demonstrates the tricky process of how to ‘turn the
heel’.

Shetland’s Finest Shetland Fleece
What is it about Shetland sheep that makes for some of the finest wool? Join hand spinner
Elizabeth Johnston and the Bradley family from their croft at Gletness, as they talk about
Shetland’s native breed and the wonderful variety of natural colours they produce.

Makkin and Yakkin: Meeting the new generation of Shetland knitters (approx. 60 mins)
It’s been well-documented that knitting has experienced a resurgence of interest in recent
years. Even in a place such as Shetland with its strong knitting heritage, it is a skill that to some
has been forgotten or remains a mystery. Meet some of the new generation of Shetland
knitters ‘maakin and yakkin’ and hear what inspired them to begin knitting, or to return to a
childhood hobby and pick up their wires again.
A Style of its own: Knitting from Whalsay
The island of Whalsay has a long history of rich creativity, not least of all for its amazing and
colourful knitwear, which has a distinctive Fair Isle style of its own. In this film we hear from
Whalsay knitters Linda Shearer and Amanda Pottinger who chat through various garments
from the ‘bonnie isle’, their background in knitting, and share some of the hats they’ve knitted
for the annual Jamieson & Smith ‘Colourbox Challenge’.

Plus

A series of short masterclass instructional videos from Elizabeth Johnston of Shetland
Handspun
The films are all based on processes required for Elizabeth’s new ‘Fairag Cardigan’ pattern in
the SWW Annual 2021, and will focus on:

   • Knitting in the Round – Joining up the cast on row
The perfect way to join up the cast on row to knit in the round, without a jog or
interruption and fastening off the end at the same time, to leave a perfect cast on
       edge.

   • Picking up neckline stitches
Picking up stitches along the neckline can be tricky. Find out how to make the pick-
up edge look smooth and seamless.

   • Three-needle bind off/cast off
A very useful way to join 2 pieces of knitting together instead of grafting (Kitchener
stitch), to cast off or join part of a garment together. Elizabeth will show you where
       she regularly uses this technique.

And
Hentilagets: Sounds from the Archives of The School of Scottish Studies will see seven short
audio recordings with illustration from the photography collection of Shetland Museum
The School of Scottish Studies Archives, at the University of Edinburgh, holds over 33,000
recordings collected from all over Scotland over the past 70 years. Fieldworkers of the School
of Scottish Studies sought to record all aspects of life from songs and music, folklore and tales,
customs, traditions, local history, fishing and farming techniques and more.
During Shetland Wool Week, The School of Scottish Studies will bring you voices from
Shetland’s past to describe glimpses of wool and garment production.
When most of these recordings were made there was no internet, no Wool Week, no idea of
how important the knitting world and community would become. Like Hentilagets – small
lisks of sheep’s wool caught on Shetland fences - these recordings are a gift.
The recordings will cover:

   • Sheep
   • Wool
   • Cardings - social events pre-War years
   • Spinning Songs
   • Knitting
   • Weaving
   • Woolly Fun - jokes, superstitions, customs
Tickets available from 16:00 (BST) on 4 September 2021
