Research Our research program has a strong focus on precision medicine through clinical and translational research, health informatics and molecular determinants of chronic and acute childhood illness. A growing number of institution-wide prospective cohort studies is supported by an accredited pediatric biorepository for processing and storage of patient-derived specimens for current and future research. An enhanced data warehouse and the development of our molecular determinants core with a focus on metabolomics, proteomics and genomics technologies and techniques will enable us to use clinical data and specimens to discover the molecular basis of health outcomes. There are currently more than 300 active clinical research studies at Johns Hopkins All Children’s, including investigator-initiated studies and phase 1 clinical trials. Our clinicians are also engaged in outcomes studies, frequently as part of national collaboratives that allow us to measure our progress against established benchmarks. In addition, physician scientists in St. Petersburg and Baltimore collaborate on clinical trials, translational research and cohort studies providing larger study populations to support pediatric research. A new health informatics program launched in August 2016 will enhance the current infrastructure supporting biostatistics, epidemiology and data management and continue to advance our research mission. Sharon Ghazarian, Ph.D., has joined Johns Hopkins All Children’s as senior director of health informatics and will lead these initiatives. Construction is underway on a 230,000 square-foot research and education building that will house wet and dry research labs, the biorepository and molecular determinants laboratory and additional research infrastructure along with collaborative space for physicians, scientists, nurses and other child health specialists. Education Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital (JHACH) provides a rich environment for training tomorrow’s pediatric specialists and child health leaders. In 2012 the hospital received accreditation for an innovative pediatric residency program which welcomed its first class of interns in 2014. The program is currently training 35 residents. These pediatric residents take part in a unique Leadership Executive Academic Development Curriculum that provides early opportunities for research and mentoring. Residents have the opportunity to participate in in a 12-month Designing Clinical Research program that provides immersive time with teaching faculty and seasoned researchers. They may also complete elective rotations at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and pediatric residents and medical students from the Baltimore campus can choose electives in St. Petersburg. Since the 1970s, the hospital has been a teaching affiliate of the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, whose pediatric residents complete rotations at JHACH. In addition, USF medical students and residents in adult specialties complete rotations at JHACH to learn about pediatric-specific health concerns. All pediatric residents have the opportunity to select a newly created rotation in patient safety and quality. In addition, a state-of-the-art simulation laboratory provides residents with hands-on training followed by immediate review and feedback. JHACH now offers an accredited pediatric general surgery fellowship; the first fellow graduated in 2016. Fellowship programs in surgery research, cancer research, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, neonatal-perinatal medicine and blood and marrow transplant are expanding our academic mission. The Johns Hopkins All Children’s Research and Education Building slated to open in 2018 will be an educational center for pediatric resident physicians and fellows. The 230,000 square-foot building will include an expanded clinical simulation laboratory, classrooms and collaborative spaces that promote the open exchange of knowledge and research opportunities. 18 For more information visit: HopkinsAllChildrens.org
