a cruise wonder of the world Watch from the Promenade deck or from your balcony as your ship is raised and lowered through the Panama Canal’s lock system, powered by gravity using water pulled from Gatun Lake, and you’ll be struck by the capacity of human ingenuity. Each historic lock fills with an astonishing 52 million gallons of water and measures 110 feet across and 1,050 feet in length, leaving a berth of only 16 inches on either side of your ship. While the new, expanded locks can accommodate larger ships, the process is equally as astounding. A Panama Canal expert will give a live narration from the bridge as you transit the Canal, providing history and insight along the way. It’s been deemed one of mankind’s greatest engineering achievements, and sailing the Panama Canal has become one of the must-do travel experiences of the world. THE CANAL EXPERIENCE As you glide from port to port, diversity of people and sites you’ll encounter in Central and South America is a wonder to behold. Travel by dugout canoe to an Embera village in the heart of Chagres National Park in Fuerte Amador. Witness history as you ride the world’s first transcontinental railroad, the Panama Canal Railroad. And soar above the jungle paradise of Soberanía National Park via aerial tram. You’ll also have access to six UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the Archaeological Site of Panamá Viejo, the Historic On board the Panama Canal Railway District of Panamá, and Fort San Lorenzo, one of the most complete and biggest forts built in Panama. 2 BOOK NOW! SCENIC CRUISING IN GATUN LAKE Every transit through the Panama Canal locks includes scenic cruising through the wild and wonderful Gatun Lake, once the world’s largest man-made lake, dotted with small islands and lush vegetation. The powerful tankers and container ships are a sight to behold and this intimate view of the Gatun Lake canal system is something only a cruise ship can provide. Panama Canal construction showing workers drilling holes for dynamite in bedrock. 1913. AN ENDURING LEGACY The Panama Canal took a full 10 years to complete, with upwards of 50,000 workers at a time carving through thick jungle and granite. It took 4.5 million cubic yards of concrete to make the locks and dams of the canal, and more than 60 million pounds of dynamite to excavate and construct it. When it opened in 1914, the 51-mile-long waterway through the Isthmus of Panama finally linked the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In doing so, it forever changed the course of travel, as ships sailing from New York to California could cross the Canal in eight to 10 hours, rather than making the nearly 8,000-mile-long journey around Cape Horn. 1 THE PANAMA Cristobal CANAL TODAY Caribbean Sea 2 A major expansion Gatun Approach Channels completed in 2016 Gatun Locks Locks Agua Clara added the new Agua Locks Clara Locks on the 1 Atlantic/Caribbean Entrance Agua Clara Atlantic Coast and the 2 Locks 2 Gatun/Agua Clara Locks 11 Cocoli Locks on the 3 Gatun Lake 3 Pacific Coast, which can now accommodate 4 Culebra Cut larger ships to transit 5 Centennial Bridge 10 the Canal.
