WELCOME Hello, my name is Charlotte and this morning you’ll see me sitting with my friends in the viola section of Queensland Symphony Orchestra. I'm so happy you've come to our concert, which is being presented in partnership with the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. The first thing I’d like you to do today is to look up and all around you. Is this the biggest room you’ve ever been in? This is QPAC's Concert Hall and we’re going to fill it with music! An orchestra is like an enormous family, and when we play our instruments together we go on the most beautiful and exciting adventures. Would you like to come with us? If you listen carefully we’ll take you flying through the sky on a broomstick and you might feel the air whooshing past you, just like Harry Potter. Then, we’ll take a very slow walk with my friend ‘The Elephant’ in the Carnival of the Animals. Together, we can tip-toe through a gloomy cave and go In the Hall of the Mountain King, who might try to chase us away. We may even come across a Baby Shark if we can reach the ocean! I still remember the first time I heard an orchestra - it was magical, and my adventures have continued ever since. I hope you have a brilliant time with us today and that your imagination runs wild! LISTENING HIGHLIGHTS Before we get started with today’s performance, get to know some of the music you’re about to hear on stage. 'Voldemort', 'Nimbus 2000', and Hedwig's Flight' from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone John Williams John Williams only wrote the music for three of the eight Harry Potter films, but his music so captures the feeling of J.K. Rowling’s magical world that they are the tunes that everyone thinks of when they picture of the boy wizard and his friends. For 'Voldemort', John William chose three bassoons to represent the mysterious and evil character of he-who-must-not-be-named. See if you can spot the contrabassoon - the biggest of the woodwind instruments. It has a very deep sound, and provides the bass part for this trio. In ‘Nimbus 2000’ you will hear the woodwind section make leaps and bounds as they mimic the sounds of a broomstick whooshing through the air. Listen as the flutes, oboes, clarinets and bassoons depict the excitement of Harry receiving his ‘Nimbus 2000’ and the thrill of the Quidditch match. For ‘Hedwig’s Flight’ you will hear the mysterious celeste playing the theme we think of when someone says ‘Harry Potter'! At first it's a delicate sound, like a feather floating in the air. Then as the wind picks it up, the other instruments join in to help paint the picture of Hedwig, the snowy owl, flying across a night sky. Listen out for the noble sounding French horns that voice the iconic theme. As the music builds, can you hear bells tinkling in amongst the swell of the orchestra? DID YOU KNOW? A celeste is similar to a piano (another name for it is a bell- piano because of the sound it makes). Can you hear it? 4 PROGRAM | SOUNDS LIKE AN ORCHESTRA
'Elephant' from Carnival of the Animals Camille Saint-Saëns The composer of this music loved animals so much he wrote a collection of pieces depicting lots of different creatures from hens and roosters to fish and even kangaroos! The piece you will hear today is about a lumbering elephant. As the music plays, can you imagine a big heavy elephant walking around? In the Hall of the Mountain King from Peer Gynt Suite No.1 Edvard Grieg In the Hall of the Mountain King transports us into a fantastical cave where monsters reign. The tension builds from the opening moments, tiptoeing extra quietly before gaining speed and volume. A band of trolls have captured the character, Peer Gynt, in the cavernous hall with plans to roast him on a spit! As forceful music hurtles us towards an uproarious finale, Peer escapes – and the trolls go without their dinner. Adapted from notes by Stephanie Eslake Overture from William Tell Gioachino Rossini Have you heard this one before? Chances are you have! From Looney Tunes and Bugs Bunny to Mickey Mouse, this piece of music has been used everywhere. This piece of music was most famously used in an old cowboy TV show called 'The Lone Ranger'. As the music begins we are heralded by trumpets. The music picks up speed and other instruments join in (hear the flutes, violins and timpani), imagine soldiers on galloping horses. Faster and faster they go as the music gets louder. Finally there's a crash and a final burst from the brass instruments. Baby Shark Watch Baby Shark again. Arranged by Wayne Brennan, Scan the QR code. Section Principal Second Violin There’s a fun story behind this one. During lockdown in 2020, one of our violinists Wayne Brennan took the catchy tune and arranged it for the entire orchestra to play! Our musicians then filmed themselves performing and singing it at home and we shared the video on YouTube (with a few fun shark themed outfits too). We know it will be stuck in your head for hours!
