WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KING Home News Getting to know our Team Meet Rhonda and Chad Schmidt H ello everyone! We are Rhonda and Chad Schmidt from Winneconne, about 45 minutes southeast of King. We both have been volunteering at the Wisconsin Veterans Home since 2009. Chad is just shy of 1,000 hours and myself with over 187 hours. My husband of 25 years, Chad, is retired. I still work full time for AMCOR Flexibles North America in Oshkosh. We are both in our 50’s, and have two cats and two dogs that we occasionally enjoy bringing to King for a visit. Chad volunteers weekly to play cribbage with one of our Olson Hall members, deals Poker on Tuesdays, and assists with other social events. I enjoy visiting those members who do not get regular visitors, and also volunteer for social events. I am able to volunteer once or twice a year with my fellow co-workers by sewing projects for the Veterans Home during our lunch breaks. In June, we were able to sew 57 catheter bags. I am blessed to work with such wonderful and talented ladies! Chad and I are both veterans ourselves. We enjoy biking and gardening, and Chad loves to golf and competitive shoot. I also volunteer with various church activities, serve as church treasurer, and volunteer with ministry for Kairos Outside prison ministry. Building relationships with the members at King enables us to give of ourselves in a small way, which gives us such peace. We know our efforts mean so much to the members. 8
Chaplain’s Column WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KING John Roe Protestant Chaplain What Do We Do? W hat do you do when you don’t know what to do? What is your response to new trends, new realities, differences of opinion, and this fast-paced world in which we live? Most of us don’t like change, in fact, we resist change. In the church world we see denominations, as well as individuals, that would much rather stick to dead traditions than have a healthy, vital, relationship with the living Christ. There is a level of comfort in knowing that certain things are going to happen at certain times and in a certain way. We get attached to the familiar and can be upset, or even devastated, when changes come. The bubble in which we live is our ‘safe’ place. A place where things go according to our plan, and we feel that we have a measure of control. In that place we feel our individual needs are being met in a way that we find satisfactory. The Old Testament Jews had a multitude of traditions and laws that governed everything they did. Everybody knew what was happening and what would happen if they strayed from the norm. When Jesus came on the scene, He rattled them because He didn’t follow their norms in the traditional ways. In fact, He told the religious leader, Nicodemus, he had to be “born again” in order to be part of the kingdom of God. Nicodemus immediately pushed back, “How is this possible?” Jesus explained that there was a new way of looking at things and it would be like starting all over again. Unlearning some of the things that you know in order to make room for the truth is a daunting thing. How could you have missed it so badly? Why didn’t someone show you this truth earlier. Jesus further challenged those around Him by stating, “I am the way the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father but by me.” (John 14:6) To the Jews that was blasphemy and was one of the reasons that they had to eliminate Him. He was upsetting the way they had always done things. continued on page 11 9

Home News WISCONSIN VETERANS HOME AT KING What Do We Do? continued from page 9 Each of us needs to study the scriptures for ourselves. The truth is in the Word of God and is discoverable. There are study guides and daily devotionals available here on Camp. Ask about receiving your copy of either, PORTALS OF PRAYER, OUR DAILY BREAD OR LIVING FAITH. If you would like another study guide, please call the Spiritual Care Office and we will do our best to work with you on it. Change is easier to accept if you are aware that it is coming and can be as prepared as possible for the transition. By studying God’s Word, you will be prepared for the things to come and will learn how to cope with the things that have already happened. Being prepared spiritually for changes will help you to be prepared emotionally and physically. When you are in a spiritual safe place, having confidence that God is in control, you can keep your peace of mind while others are losing theirs. What do you do when you don’t know what to do? Study God’s Word and take it to the Lord in prayer. Often what we think is going to be really bad can actually turn out to be really good. 11
