Historic Utah Theater to Make Way for Skyscraper Despite efforts to save it, the 101-year-old Utah Theater in downtown Salt Lake City will likely be torn down to make way for a 375-ft-tall skyscraper developed by Hines Interests LP and local firm the Lasalle Group, various news outlets, including The Salt Lake Tribune, reported in November 2019. Daunted by the US$60- million price tag to restore the historic structure, city leaders signed a formal sales agreement with developers, who plan to make 30 of 300 residences “affordable,” include public space and incorporate theater elements into the design in exchange for a discounted price on the property. Earlier in 2019, it was valued at US$4.07 million. Ground-level retail and parking are also on the drawing board at 144 South Main Street.
