Dr. Penny Schwinn Tennessee’s Commissioner of Education T ennessee schools are accelerating into summer with busy calendars with lots of innovative plans and activities, specifically summer learning loss camps to make up for lost time and better prepare students to take on a new school year this fall. These summer learning loss camps will be taking place across the state, and we can’t wait to see the exciting things districts and schools are doing again this year as they tap into their creative talent to design programs to accelerate their students’ success. Last year, Tennessee’s first summer of learning loss camps, over 130,000 students successfully participated in summer programming across the state. We were thrilled to see such innovative program- ming that spurred growth for students, as they improved their foundational literacy and math skills. The department is looking forward to another busy summer and being able to see the incredible work students and teachers are doing in-action as they prepare for a new school year and to build upon their foundational skills. It’s a busy and wonderful time in public education in Tennessee, and we are excited about celebrating the hard work of students, families and educators as we continue accelerating this summer and prepare for another school year this fall. Sincerely, Penny Schwinn Tennessee Commissioner of Education Tucker First Putnam County Student to Earn Financial Industry Credential Setting the stage for all PCSS students to earn an Industry Credential Putnam County School System (PCSS) has its first student to earn the Center for Financial Responsibility Literacy Industry Credential (IC). Griffin Tucker of Upper- man High School was a part of a pilot program through the VITAL (Virtual instruction To Accentuate Learning) personal finance class that passed her IC exam, making her the first to receive this certification in the district. “We are so proud of Griffin. She has worked hard, and it is a wonderful accomplishment,” said Jackie Vester, PCSS Early Post Secondary Opportunities (EPSO) Specialist. “ Industry Credentials are a big piece of the puzzle when it comes to a student being a ready graduate. Those who earn this credential are Photo: Adam West, PCSS Instructional leader; Tucker Griffin, more qualified and prepared to make major purchasing decisions, budget and UHS student; and Jackie Vester, PCSS EPSO Specialist. invest to achieve long-term financial success, no matter what job they choose.” Putnam County schools can offer this credential through iCEV (Creative Educational Videos) online to all students. According to Vester, approximately 40 additional Putnam County students will sit for the industry certification before the end of the school year as part of this pilot. “Currently, we are in the preliminary data collection phase with the pilot. Depending upon the data, we will proceed with full implementation next year for every student to have the opportunity to earn an industry credential,” said Adam West, PCSS Instructional leader. “Adjustments will be made in the curriculum to increase student success. The data will help identify areas that can be strengthened within the pilot course.” Like WCTE, PCSS is passionate about providing students with as many opportunities as they can to further their education and future careers. If this industry credential moves into full implementation, it will provide students an opportunity to earn two of their four EPSOs, which is a requirement to be a graduate ready. “This is a big deal because PCSS students get the opportunity to earn an industry certification through a general class, Personalized Finance, they are already required to take to graduate from high school. Anytime we can build something into general high school graduation requirement we are going to help our students in the long run. This will be wonderful for all students and move them one step closer to becoming Ready Graduates,” said Vester. 12 | WCTE PBS Close-Up
