Level 4 - 5 Summer brief 2020 This brief is asking you to consider where your practice lies. This will support you in further understanding yourself as a fashion practitioner and industry professional –now and into the future! Research and define what your personal ‘hero’ projects are from the contemporary fashion world. Investigate potential future career opportunities suited to your aspirations and skills. Please complete the following elements: 1. Case Studies 2. Element 1: case studies Consider: Why you are drawn to this particular case study / theme / hero project - what is the sustainable, ethical, environmental, cultural, social context and how does this reflect your personal philosophy? KATHARINE HAMNETT STAY ALIVE IN 85 printed in ‘newspaper’ block capitals appears in the collections of several museums around the world. This particular slogan was inspired by Hamnett’s interest in and support for women’s anti- nuclear protests at Greenham Common airbase in the UK. ECKHAUS LATTA 19 FASHION WEEK - DIVERSITY Spring 2019 was the most gender-inclusive, racially and size diverse fashion month ever. After examination of 229 shows and 7,431 castings, The Fashion Spot revealed that 36.1% of all castings across the 4 western cities went to models of colour, in comparison to only 17% back in 2015. Casting of plus sized models rose in 2019 to a total of 54 models appearing in 15 LOUIS VUITTON FW10 shows, almost double of the previous season. GREG LAUREN The label, launched in 2011, is known for its deconstructed, androgynous feel. Each design is experimental in construction and design, consisting of menswear and womenswear almost entirely handmade in his LA studio. Daniel Obasi Artistic director, stylist and photographer, who captures the vibrancy and beauty of African culture. Most famously, Obasi is known for his images of the controversial gender fluidity within Nigeria. Element 1: case studies follow on YOUR CASE STUDIES WILL FORM A BASIS FOR A SUMMATIVE TEAM-WORKING ASSESSMENT (NB: During L5, you may also complete other FORMATIVE group activities not related to this work in multiple units) As part of an assigned team, you will negotiate and select one of the case studies or concepts to support a collaborative manifesto, or concept pitch. This will culminate in a summative group assessment within your Fashion Collaboration unit There will be a team working policy, including details of contribution penalties up to -50% Details will be briefed at the appropriate time IF YOU DO NOT or INCORRECTLY SUBMIT THIS ELEMENT YOU WILL BE ALLOCATED A TEAM WITHOUT CONSIDERATION OF PHILOSOPHIES AND/OR IDEALS AS THIS WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE TO GUAGE WITHOUT CASE STUDIES. This will be non-negotiable.

What skills and knowledge have you acquired, that you didn’t have a year ago? Are you drawn to any particular elements of the course as a potential future career direction? Junior Product Developer – The Role: Working under the Product Manager you will be taking the garment from the initial concept through the development process to the bulk shipment stage including AQL and all quality points to ensure that the end product is fit for purpose. Your role is product development combined with a number of technical elements: Working closely with the design team you will source fabrics to develop the style concept as required, considering costs/margins. Chase all prices at each stage of the process. Working with senior developers to place the style at the appropriate source. Maintain and manage the critical path process, ensuring all details are kept up to date Liaise directly with suppliers / factories Build strong relationships and communication within other business departments. Identifying and sourcing new technologies / ways of working Ensure all fabrics, components and trims are compliant to the correct quality standards Approve lab dips and bulk fabrics Create tech packs, BOMs, size charts Maintain garment fits, blocks, and grade rules for consistency across the brand products Liaise with all supply bases for on time deliveries. Maintain test reports Arrange and conduct fit sessions with the relevant team members and design Ensure that all quality points of the garment are achieved to ensure that the garment is fit for purpose Attend weekly team meetings Junior Product Developer – The Candidate: Looking for a candidate with a background in product development and/or as a garment technologist. Candidates with merchandising experience will also be considered. Ideally looking for someone with 3 year’s industry experience working within apparel. A background is casualwear, leisurewear or active/sportswear would be advantageous. YOUR UPDATED CV Terms: • You will be continuing to develop this with supportive activities, so you only need a starting point. • Could be hand-created, typed or generated using digital software: computer, tablet, smartphone etc. • Consider the clarity of your format / page layout, ensuring it is not ‘Style over Substance’ • Images / Text should be clearly visible, readable and not pixelated • File name should be clear e.g.: YOURNAMEcv1 • Does NOT need to be submitted in advance but you will need to be able to share your document digitally (generic files such as word.doc, pdf, jpeg –photo / scan etc) You may find it helpful for your own development / note making to have 1-2 printed copies available (You will be able to access university printers on the first day of term if you prefer to use them, but the print quality is not important at this stage as long as it is readable to you)
Element 2: Professionalism Preparation / follow on YOUR WORK WILL FORM A BASIS FOR EXERSIZES LEADING TOWARDS A SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT You will participate in a series of further activities designed to support your personal and professional development. Some will be individual and others working in groups of varying sizes. This will include a (Virtual) Assessment Centre day, run by an external company on Weds 21st October 2020. Save the date – you will need to be available to participate in the live event all day. This will culminate in a summative individual assessment within your Fashion Industry unit, which will ask you to reflect* upon the activities and experiences that have been developed to support you. You will also consider other impactful personal and professional experiences to date, beyond the course. IF YOU DO NOT or INCORRECTLY SUBMIT THIS ELEMENT YOU MAY DISADVANTAGE YOURSELF AT THE START OF THE UNIT. YOU WILL NEED TO COMPLETE THIS WORK TO UNDERTAKE THE PLANNED ACTIVTIES, IF NOT IN ADVANCE, THEN AT THE TIME ALONGSIDE ADDITIONAL TASKS. *You have already completed some self-reflection in the L4 evaluations we asked you to submit with practice units. You will be expanding on this further into L5. If you wish to get ahead, you can familiarise yourself with some reflective models / theories.
