PRINCIPAL’S Reflection Over this year the College has highlighted a number of issues around unjust Father’s Day discrimination: • IDAHOBIT day – where the College stood up in continuing to oppose unjust discrimination of the LGBTQIA+ community Homeroom Session On Thursday 2 September we welcomed fathers, grandfathers, and • Refugee support – students and staff other special men to our extended Homeroom. In the session our attended a number of vigils outside the Faith Captains Georgia and Hieu shared a prayer about our fathers. Carlton motel in which refugees had Our College Captains Jordan, Amelia and Nathan and some of our been unfairly incarcerated for a lengthy student leaders explained why we love our fathers/ father figures period. and their importance to us. This video was created by William Diffey • RUOK Day – in asking RUOK? we (Year 12, NDC). The wonderful efforts of our Mission Integration Team and Social Justice Captains made these events vibrant statements of College support for the marginalised and oppressed. In particular, congratulations to Social Justice Captain, Yadani Fekadu, on receiving the One Wyndham Young Person of the Month award. We hear sometimes that Catholics, and the Church, ‘should not be involved in politics’. This misunderstands the Good News of God’s coming Kingdom proclaimed in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus – the call to love all, to stand with the oppressed and marginalised – a Kingdom of and for the poor. Even more so in this continued time of a AFLW global pandemic. As the Pope was quoted in 2020: ‘he hoped Draft Pick humanity had developed the “antibodies Congratulations to Ms of justice, charity, and solidarity” when Runnalls who has been faced with the temptation to return to “the selected to be part of the globalization of indifference.”’ AFLW Fremantle squad for 2022. We wish her well and cannot wait to see her star Christopher Stock on the big stage. Principal 1 | EC News
Virtual Activities Library This term the Library held many remote activities for our students. As usual we had many creative submissions for our annual LEGO Masters Competition and it was difficult for our judges (Ms Derrig, Ms Lever, Mr Gray and Mr Martin) to choose a winner each week. Themes for the different rounds included food, ‘Old Worlds/ New Worlds and Other Worlds’, and buildings. It was wonderful to connect with our students during remote learning. Young Person of the Month Yadani Fekadu, currently in Year 12 and our Mission Social Justice Captain, has been announced as the September Young Person of the Month for One Wyndham. This award is given to a Wyndham resident aged between 12 – 25 who positively contributes to the community. Yadani was nominated as she regularly raises awareness of injustices, promotes inclusions and volunteers her time to help others. She has also helped provide platforms to fundraise, engage and promote positive change. We are proud of the achievements she has made so far. Cultural Diversity Week In mid–August the College community came together to celebrate Cultural Diversity Week. We have many staff and students and they all come from different cultures and backgrounds. Some activities during the week included learning phrases from another language, completing “Where are you from?” quizzes, and changing Zoom backgrounds to represent the different heritages. Languages at Emmanuel Our Languages staff have recently been featured in publications relating to their language specialties. Mr Yamamoto had his article published in JLTAV website (Japanese Language Teachers’ Association of Victoria) and Ms Setini had her article published in Il Globo. In their articles both teachers talk about the successful Language Week which was celebrated at the College. They also discuss how our senior students were able to learn more about their chosen language through informative seminars. Ms Gardner–Chan was also recently featured in the Italian newspaper Il Globo. She discusses how languages changed her life. 3 | EC News

Tessellation Project Our Year 8 students have been completing a tessellation project. They used the shapes to work out a draft, then using graph paper they extrapolated the shapes out or made them smaller using a scale factor. As an extension to apply and transfer their skills, they then downloaded their work in Google drawings and tried additional shapes to fit the tessellations. “This project was very interesting and different. I really liked it because it got me thinking of the many possible ways to put the shapes in a tessellation. There would be nothing that I would change to this project, it is very fun and problem solving. We really needed to be creative and think very hard to be able to see and connect the shapes, and the measurements had to be perfect or else everything falls apart.” Alexander Angelidis (Year 8) Author Guest Speaker Despite the challenges of lockdown and remote learning, the combined Year 12s participated in the unique opportunity to meet and listen to Rosalie Ham, author of “The Dressmaker” as part of their English studies. It is a rare opportunity to be able to engage an author in conversation about their text. Our students were privileged to have her in their virtual classroom. G.I.R.L. Activities Crew At Emmanuel we have been building connections with our feeder primary school students. This year we introduced the G.I.R.L. Crew program where Grade 4 and 5 female students came onto campus to participate in different after school activities. Due to the current restrictions the Term 3 classes were offered online. It was a great success where we had students participate in Art and Dance sessions. Students learnt basic dance moves and in the art sessions learnt how to draw buildings, faces and flowers. We hope restrictions will ease and we can offer this program back on campus in Term 4 and beyond. Macy King 5 | EC News
Games Night Staying Connected Virtually There are many transition events that we offer Year 6 students before they begin Year 7 at Emmanuel. This term due to the current lockdown we had to host our annual Games Night virtually. Students and families enjoyed two rounds of trivia questions. The first round consisted of questions about the College and naming the different places in the picture. The second round were questions about TV shows and movies. At the end of the night students and families had the opportunity to ask questions in an open forum. It was great to see the enthusiasm from the students as they asked questions about homeroom, House structure, laptops and Year 7 Camp. Our next Year 7 event will be the Parent Information Night on Wednesday 24 October. Further details will be sent out closer to the day. Congratulations to the following students, prizes will be sent out once school resumes.
