TD KidStreet Hosts Kids Activity Tent Jeff Szpirglas Jeff Szpirglas has written two novels for middle-grade readers, Evil Eye and Dentures of Doom, and most recently, Countdown to Danger: Canadian Survival, a choose-your- own-ending novel, published by Scholastic Canada. He’s worked at CTV Television and was an editor at Chirp, Chickadee and OWL magazines. He has twin children and two cats (the cats are not twins). In his spare time, he teaches second grade. He lives in Toronto, Ontario. TD Children’s Literature Tent Patricia Storms Patricia Storms is an illustrator/author of children’s books and humour books. She loves to draw, paint, write, sing, dance, play the ukulele and dream. She has illustrated many children’s books including 13 Ghosts of Halloween, The Ghosts Go Spooking, If You’re Thankful And You Know It and By The Time You Read This. She also enjoys writing stories! She has written and illustrated The Pirate and the Penguin and the much-loved Never Let You Go. Her newest story, Moon Wishes, co-written with her husband Guy Storms and illustrated by Milan Pavlovic, will come out March 2019 with Groundwood Books. She lives in Toronto with her husband and a very needy cat. Kari-Lynn Winters Kari-Lynn Winters is a performer, poet, scholar, and award- winning author of 26 children’s picture books, including her latest, Hungry for Science: Poems to Crunch On. Kari- Lynn is an Associate Professor at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario where she teaches soon-to-be teachers how to incorporate drama into literacy. 8
Learning Station 10:15 AM – 11: 11:00 AM The Great Braille Challenge allenge Test your senses of taste, smell, hearing and touch. Team up to compete for prizes against some fabulous and talented CNIB participants and staff. Remember, braille readers do it upside down and in the dark! Everyone wins in this contest. Sue Vaile is Coordinator, Literacy, for CNIB Foundation’s new Community Hub at Yonge and St. Clair. Legally blind from diabetic retinopathy and optic atrophy, Sue is a lifelong artist and describes herself as a tactile girl with a love of braille. 11:15 AM – 12:00 PM Ripple Foundation: Brainstorm Bonanza Join us for Brainstorm Bonanza, the first part of the Ripple Foundation’s three-part Write It Workshop. Developed by an Ontario teacher with 20+ years experiences, this creative writing program focuses on improving the writing skills and confidence of Canadian youth. 12:15 PM – 1:00 PM Frontier College: Read-a-Long Art Show Frontier College proudly presents our Read-a-Long Art Show with author and illustrator Matt James. As Matt reads from his books, children can draw their own masterpieces! Drop by the Learning Station to receive free children’s books courtesy of Frontier College. 1:15 PM – 2:00 PM ONBIDA: Laying the Foundations for Reading Success Join ONBIDA to hear how you can help your child develop the foundational skills for learning to read. Learn how phonological and letter sound proficiency and vocabulary skills, work together to facilitate word reading accuracy and fluency. Resources will be shared. See you at the Learning Station! 2:15 PM – 3:00 PM Vallum: Blackout Poetry With a focus on fun, Vallum welcomes all ages to participate in creating poetry through crafts. Equipped with markers, newspapers, and other supplies, participants will blackout and collage together poems making art that they can take home, share and enjoy! Greg Santos is the author of three full-length books and two chapbooks including Blackbirds (Eyewear Publishing 2018). Santos has extensive experience both designing and conducting educational, exciting poetry workshops for all ages. 3:15 PM – 4:00 PM The Love Lettering Project The Love Lettering Project is a community engagement project that asks participants to write anonymous letters about what they love about where they live and hide them for strangers to find. The project has toured the UK, Canada’s north, the US and recently travelled to Brazil. Lindsay Zier-Vogel is a Toronto-based writer, arts educator and the creator of the internationally-acclaimed Love Lettering Project. Since 2004, Lindsay has been asking participants in over 250 events to write love letters to the communities and hide them for strangers to find, spreading the love. 4:15 PM – 5:00 PM ASL Storytelling Storytelling like never before. American Sign Language (ASL), Deaf culture, and Deaf heritage are brought to the stage told in beautiful ASL, celebrating the language and experience of Deaf Canadians. Experience the engagement of parent and child through ASL stories . You’ll be moved and inspired. 9

Kids Activity Tent 10:15 AM - 11:00 AM Heather’s Music Circle Heather’s Music Circle is a warm and welcome environment that invites children and families to join in singing songs they know and love, as well as exploring new songs, instruments and stories they may not have had the chance to experience yet. Heather is an ECE graduate from George Brown College. She has worked with families for many years in both childcare and musical environments. She is a trained singer and a touring musician, performing with prominent Toronto bands. 11:15 AM - 12:00 PM Fox and Squirrel Help Out – Squeak’s Bat-Mobile! Fox and Squirrel are friends who both realize they have a lot to offer when a little baby bat drops out of the sky. Can they work together to figure out how to help their new friend Squeak? Ruth Ohi has illustrated over 50 children's books—several of which she has also written. Her books have been nominated for numerous awards, including the Governor General's Award. Ruth lives with her family in Toronto, Ontario. 12:15 PM - 1:00 PM The Almost Epic Squad: Mucus Mayhem – Character Creation! Meet the 1st member of the Almost Epic Squad: Jess Flem is about to find out she possesses a very strange superpower. It's weird! It's gross! But it will come in very handy, when an evil overlord comes to town, threatening world domination. Kevin Sylvester is an award-winning author, illustrator, reporter, radio sports host, producer and documentary maker. His books include the MiNRS and Neil Flambe series. Kevin lives in Toronto, Ontario with his family. 12
1:15 PM - 2:00 PM Kids Write 4 Kids Want creative writing inspiration? Stop by the Children’s Activity Tent for book readings by Emana Ali, Emily Little, and Safaa Ali. These three Canadian youth authors won the Ripple Foundation’s Kids Write 4 Kids contests over the past few years. Ripple Foundation is a charitable organization that fosters creativity in youth across Canada. Since 2015, we have developed and facilitated activities that encourage creative writing in children, including our Kids Write 4 Kids contest, Write It Workshop, and Wave Blog. 2:15 PM - 3:00 PM Good Night, Good Night – Story Time and Draw-Along! Good Night, Good Night collects some of Dennis Lee’s best-loved poems on the themes of bedtime and dreaming, brought to life by the warm and whimsical art of award-winning ill illustrator Qin Qi Leng. L This Thi board b d book is the perfect nighttime read-aloud for the very young. Dennis Lee is Toronto’s first Poet Laureate, an Officer of the Order of Canada, and the author of timeless children’s collections such as Alligator Pie, Garbage Delight, Jelly Belly, Bubblegum Delicious, and The Ice Cream Store. Qin Leng is a designer and illustrator whose work has received the APALA Award for best picture book and been nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Award for Children’s Literature. 3:15 PM - 4:00 PM Chirp's Science Corner Grab your lab coat and join Chirp and Chirp magazine editor, Jackie Farquhar, as they demonstrate three fun interactive science experiments. Conduct the balloon blow-up, perform the water bag pencil trick and mix-up a magic potion! 4:15 PM - 5:00 PM ComicMaker Join Story Planet’s artists for some hilarious comic-creation! With brainstorming, improv, and props, you’ll help a create a comic on the spot! After, each child receives a notebook so they can add to the story or draw their very own comic. Story Planet is a non-profit organization that empowers young Torontonians to make and share their stories. Our artists, writers and volunteers provide young people with creative workshop experiences that foster self confidence while building communication skills. Christopher Green, also known as “mumblethief,” is a cartoonist, educator, illustrator, and animator who comes from the Alaskan wilderness. He is also head librarian at The Turtle Library (branch #2). Josh Rosen is a cartoonist/illustrator from Toronto, Ontario. As a freelance artist he has had work featured through Slate Magazine, Dartmouth University and the University of Iowa, among others. 13

Indigenous Voices 10:00–10:30 AM Opening Ceremony Our Indigenous Voices stage will commence with ceremony to connect the audience together, through a welcoming prayer that celebrates the original, unceded territories that The Word On The Street operates on and the diverse First Nations community who calls it home! 10:30 AM – 11:00 AM I Am Not A Number Second Story Press When eight-year-old Irene is removed from her First Nations family to live in a residential school she is confused, frightened, and terribly homesick. Based on the life of co- author Jenny Kay Dupuis’ grandmother. Dr. Jenny Kay Dupuis is of Anishinaabe/Ojibway ancestry and a proud member of Nipissing First Nation. She is an educator, researcher, artist, and speaker who works full-time supporting the advancement of Indigenous education. 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM Language Lesson – Cree Come learn some words and phrases in Cree with Brenda Wastasecoot! 1:15 PM – 1:30 PM Language Lesson – Anishinaabemowin Come learn some words and phrases in Anishinaabemowin with Mykelle Pacquing! 4:15 PM – 4:45 PM Closing Ceremony We are humbled and thankful to close the day with ceremony, and view it as a call to action to continue working towards reconciliation on Turtle Island. 3:00 PM – 3:20 PM At TD Children’s Literature Tent Tales from the Tundra Inhabit Media A collection of origin stories from Inuit mythology—learn why the raven is black and find out why a walrus used to have antlers and how an earth spirit pulled the first caribou from the ground. Ibi Kaslik is an internationally published novelist and freelance writer. Her novel The Angel Riots was nominated for Ontario’s Trillium award (2009). Her first novel, Skinny, was a New York Times bestseller. 17
TD Children’s Literature Tent 10:20AM – 10:40 AM Dr. Coo and the Pigeon Protest Kids Can Press Dr. Archibald Coo, an erudite big-city pigeon, is tired of the way people treat him and the other pigeons, especially since they were once so revered. So a plan is hatched to earn the admiration of people once again. Sarah Hampson is an award-winning journalist with the Globe and Mail. Dr. Coo and the Pigeon Protest is her first foray into the world of writing for children. She lives in Toronto, Ontario. 10:40 AM – 11:00 AM Stego-cumulus Scholastic Canada Panda loves the shapes and stories of the clouds in the sky; Parrot can only see the science. It seems like they will never agree. A story of friendship, imagination and discovery—and the joy of taking in the world around you. Hilary Leung is an author and illustrator. When he isn’t working on a book project, he is playing with his two awesome children. 11:20 AM – 11:40 AM Team Steve KidsCan Press Steve the horse expects to win the forest’s annual Race-a- thon, like he does every year. But this year it’s a relay race, which means Steve can share his “running wisdom” and coach his teammates Turtle, Duck and Snail—for better or worse! Kelly Collier has been drawing since she was little and studied Illustration in college. But when these frenemies go their separate ways and a scary storm strikes, they realize they might be better off together. 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM CBC Presents the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award Join CBC Books for a kid-friendly look inside the five books nominated for the 2018 TD Canadian Children's Literature Award, celebrating the best work by Canadian writers for readers under the age of 12. This hour will feature readings from nominated authors and illustrators, and hands-on activities inspired by the books in the running for this year's prize. Past winners include The Tragic Tale of the Great Auk by Jan Thornhill, Missing Nimâmâ written by Melanie Florence and illustrated by François Thisdale, The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier, The Man with the Violin by Kathy Stinson and many more. The shortlist for the 2018 prize will be announced in early September. Stay tuned! 19
TD Children’s Literature Tent 1:00 PM – 1:20 PM I Am Small KidsCan Press A little girl is frustrated at always being the smallest one, until a tiny surprise shows up at home one day, putting everything into perspective. Qin Leng is a designer and illustrator whose work has received the APALA Award for best picture book and been nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Award for Children’s Literature. 1:20 PM – 1:40 PM Black Women Who Dared Second Story Press Inspirational illustrated biographies of ten Black women and women’s collectives from Canadian and American history. Included are leaders and groundbreakers who were anti-slavery activists, business women, health-care activists, civic organizers and educators. Naomi M. Moyer is a self taught, multidisciplinary artist and writer. As a Black woman, Naomi is forever interested in African diasporic histories and how they connect to Black identity. Naomi is a new Mama and lives with her family in Toronto. 1:40 PM – 2:00 PM Sugar and Snails Annick Press When the traditional rhyme just doesn’t seem to fit the boy and girl visiting their grandpa, he comes up with a list of unusual alternatives. Soon the children are coming up with their own versions that challenge the old stereotypes. Sarah Tsiang is an award-winning poet and author of children’s books, including A Flock of Shoes, Warriors and Wailers, and The Stone Hatchlings. 20
2:00 PM – 2:20 PM Grandmother's Visit Groundwood Books In Grandmother’s Visit, Grace learns to say goodbye to Grandmother. Betty Quan’s haunting yet hopeful text pairs with Carmen Mok’s gentle illustrations to show the love between a child and her grandmother in this touching book about love and loss. Betty Quan is a writer for children’s television programs, including the Discovery Kids production of Doki. She wrote Mother Tongue, which was nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama. She lives in Toronto. 2:20 PM – 2:40 PM 5-Minute Stories for Fearless Girls HarperCollins Featuring women who have pursued their dreams, changed our world, and shown everyone what women can do. From aviation pioneers to leading scientists and gold-medal athletes to princesses, these incredible stories are perfect for bedtime and on the go! Sarah Howden is a writer and editor.
