Science
Science is core to the curriculum and is compulsory.

It is offered at three levels according to the starting point of the student.

1. Practical Science (ASDAN Lifeskills Challenge Certification)

This is a programme of practical science skills and challenges that help students to
develop their scientific achievement. It looks at the whole range of science subjects. It
is certificated by completion of challenges and by teacher assessment of skills
developed. There are no tests or exams involved.

Topics and challenges are drawn from a bank held by ASDAN, but can also be designed by
the teacher to meet identified needs of students, and these centre designed challenges
are assessed and passed by ASDAN before they are taught in school.

Assessment can be through a wide range of activities, from observation of practical skills
to student presentations and recording of BSL questioning. This provides a flexible and
student centred means of identifying and rewarding our students’ progress.

Citizenship
Citizenship is a statutory subject. Each pupil will have one 45 minute period per week
which will cover at least 5 different modules over the 2 years.

Citizenship gives pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding to play an effective role
in society at local, national and international levels. It helps them to become more
informed, thoughtful and responsible citizens who are aware of their duties and rights.
Also it encourages them to play a helpful part in the life of the school and community.

Through the different modules they will also learn about our economy and democratic
communities and be encouraged to have respect for different cultures and be able to
form and express opinions. Drugs awareness is an important part of Year 10 & Year 11
work.

Throughout KS4 you will also have the opportunities to take part in Enterprise Activities.
These ‘can do’ activities will help you problem solve, take calculated risks and develop
your financial skills (capability). Local employers and people from the community will
make these interesting for you.

Computing

Pupils will spend time in computing classes developing their general computing skills. This
will using traditional office applications such as Word Processing, Spreadsheets,
Databases and Email. In addition they will be completing ASDAN bronze, silver, gold

Some of the challenges your student might see include:

Challenge Brief description
Internet Safety Pupils will learn how to stay safe online and demonstrate
safe internet practice. They will then create advice

Design and Technology (including Resistant
Materials, Food, Art & Textiles)
Pupils follow a course constructed from aspects of the ASDAN Transition Curriculum.
Units are designed to structure learning and demonstrate achievement in a range of
areas that are important for success in adult life. In D&T, pupils complete the relevant
units from Art, Food, Textiles and Technology.

Some units are completed from multiple aspects of D&T to equip learners with a better
understanding of the subject material. Alternately, pupils may use different media types
with an area of D&T to better cover the learning objectives.

Units generally centre on the pupils making or cooking something which ties in with the
learning objectives for that module. Students have to evidence their learning along the
way and show their final piece. Each unit takes between 3 and 15 learning hours to
complete.

A typical unit might include:-

Technology
Learners must design and create a personal logo for themselves. It must be made using
CAD software on the computer and also in 3D using a variety of craft materials.

Food
To be able to use cooking skills to make a variety of dishes that can be used in the home
to feed the family.

Textiles
Learners will be able to design and make a tablecloth

Art
Learners will explore various mosaics and participate in the design and creation of a
mosaic panel.

Pupils can be awarded with certification from ASDAN for their achievements.

Preparation for Adulthood –Towards
Independence

Towards Adulthood Programme (Life Skills)

In this programme we will be looking at the challenges of everyday life and preparing for
transition towards Post 16 activities.

We will be moving outside of the classroom to look at challenges within a home, within our
local area and on special trips.

This will include taking public transport, planning visits and preparing our own living space.

We will be based in Dovedale house, with a trip outside the school grounds most weeks.
Students will be involved in planning and preparation for trips, learning about what we are
going to do, how we are going to travel, what we are going to eat and how much it’s going
to cost.

They will be preparing and sorting out their own work areas.

We will using ASDAN courses that make up the “Towards Adulthood” programme:
Workright and Transition Challenge.

In addition we will be supporting other curriculum subjects by developing practical skills
and carrying out visits to support learning throughout the curriculum.
