SUMMER CYCLING AND ACTIVE TRAVEL This summer, Cycle Enfield and the Healthy Streets team will be bringing lots of activities to the people of Enfield. If you are interested in cycling, walking and making your area a safer and healthier place to live, why not sign up to the Cycle Enfield newsletters, so you can be kept up to date with all the great initiatives happening near you. Take a short trip with Beryl A bike share scheme has returned to Enfield with a partnership between London bike brand Beryl and Enfield Council. The instantly recognisable green bikes arrived in Enfield in June and are available to all for short-term trips around the borough. The bikes are fitted with ‘always on’ GPS for easy tracking and with Laserlight technology, which projects an image of a bike six metres ahead to ensure cyclists can be seen easily. This is a safety device to help notify drivers of cars and large vehicles that cyclists are present and nearby. You can download the Beryl app to use their bikes at beryl.cc/bikeshare. Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, Cllr Guney Dogan, said: “This is a fantastic time for Enfield as we continue to provide a number of options for people to get around the borough easily and safely. “We are building a sustainable transport network to connect our town centres and transport hubs and providing plenty of options to help people build healthy ways of travelling into their everyday lives.” Janet’s Story Do you need some inspiration to get back in the saddle? Janet summoned up the courage to cycle and hasn’t looked back since. Here’s her story: “I am new to cycling and recently moved to Ponders End. Following a knee injury my doctor recommended taking up swimming or cycling, so I decided to give cycling a try. “My family had always enjoyed cycling, but for a long time my mentality was ‘no way will you ever get me on a bike in London’! Since taking up riding, my knee has gained strength and I can stand easily and walk without pain. I love it and the fact it has improved my health and fitness. “The Cycle Confident one-to-one training helped me navigate large junctions on my bike and try out my new cycle to work route. I would never have ventured out without the support of the Cycle Confident courses. I am now cycling part of my commute to work in Islington, and as I build up my fitness hope to travel the whole way by bike. I have also signed up for the Bike Maintenance course and used the Dr Bike service.” Cycle Enfield offers a number of cycle skills courses for those of all ages and abilities. The courses are free and are available in group sessions or individually. Find out more and book your spot. 18
