SUNDAY SERVICES Services suspended for time being The Archbishops have written to churches asking us to suspend our public worship services for the time being in light of the Government’s recent advice on tackling the spread of Coronavirus. Therefore we will not be holding services or formal church meetings until the suspension can be lifted. The church wardens are hoping to put in place arrangements for the church building to be open for private reflection and prayer at regular times during the week, please keep an eye out for these. Clearly this is a very unusual and challenging time for all of us. We are grateful that our networks of support are strong, but if there is someone you are aware of who you think might appreciate practical or emotional or prayer support then please don’t hesitate to let someone in church know and I (Rev Ian) or Rev Alan will give you a call. There are also some prayer and worship resources available on the Church of England website to help maintain a rhythm of worship through this period. I wrote at the end of my new year message that: “God is our strength and our refuge, an ever-present help in times of trouble”, from Psalm 46, little imagining what lay ahead. If you’re anything like me, it’s easy to feel vulnerable and fretful at the moment, but in our prayers we can at least recall what God has brought us through in the past, and take His loving hand again for the next day ahead. Please be assured of our prayers at this time Ian & the ministry team Updates can be found on Facebook and the church door and noticeboards. https://www.facebook.com/ChristChurchCroft/ 3
REFLECTIONS At this time of global pandemic, we live with stark reality of death and life. Ezekiel’s vision of the valley of dry bones (37:1-14) was given when God’s people were in exile in Babylon. They felt dead, being separated from home and God! The vision answers God’s question: ‘can these bones live?’ We can also feel cut off from God, facing the loss of job, business, home or health, with churches unable to meet on Sundays. This vision assures us that God has power over death and can breathe new life into what is hopeless. When Ezekiel is told to ‘prophesy to the bones’ (4), God brings them back to life: the bones come together and are covered with muscles and skin, and then filled with God’s breath to bring new life, by the life of His Spirit. The Covid-19 virus robs people of their life by suffocation, so that they can’t breathe. Our hope beyond the pandemic is that the gift of God’s Spirit will bring new life to our lives, churches and world. Life will certainly look very different in the future, but we can be assured that God is with us and that we are safe in his hands. ‘I will put my Spirit in you, and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.’ (14). 4
We continue to hold in our prayers all those who are in need at this time. Those who are sick, those who are struggling and those who are mourning the loss of someone dear to them. 5

We will cancel the afternoon tea in May and Beer Festival in June - they can wait whilst we all focus on other priorities, and can still happen another day. The committee was formed in 1920 and so it and the hall has been through a lot in the last 100 years and will prevail again now. So, please consider this a ‘pause’ in our relationship with you, and we look forward to re- engaging when it is all over. Love, Peter McCartney (chair) 11

Birchwood Repair Centre Cafe is located at the Birchwood Youth and Community Centre, Delenty Drive WA3 6AN, opposite the old police station is open from 10am - 12noon every 3rd Saturday of the Month. Very knowledgeable and friendly people there mended my printer free of charge. They just want a donation. They also sell tea, coffee and home made cakes. Delicious. They will advise you on the part you need to buy for your item, if they cannot mend it, and then they will put it in for you. They will always try to mend it rather than you throw it away. They have people who mend bikes, radios, lights, deck chairs anything. Recommended by Barbara Laycock. Croft WI – April 2020 Obviously during the Corona virus pandemic Croft WI have been unable to hold their monthly meetings. In spite of this members have been keeping in touch via social media, e-mails, Facetime, etc. The Croft WI monthly Newsletter has still been in circulation and many of the ladies have been sending updates of their daily lives, contributing poems, photographs and general suggestions of how to pass the time during lockdown. Like most of the country they have also been catching up on those household tasks that had been on hold to do at some time in the future! Lots of members have been very industrious with their crafting skills and some are even making scrubs from old quilt covers for the NHS frontline. President Anne Lamming contributed this lockdown version of Jerusalem:- And did our feet pre-Covid times Walk upon England’s mountains green And were our children out at play In England’s pleasant pastures seen? And did those rainbows so divine Shine forth upon our window sills For NHS much needed here Amongst towns, villages and hills! Bring me my soap to wash my hands Bring me my shopping I require Bring me my health and my household Bring me strength that I desire We will not cease to fight the blight Nor spread this virus by our hand Till we have stayed six feet apart To free our green and pleasant land! (Anne sent this with apologies to William Blake!) 14
