[ ROSEBANK NEWS & EVENTS ] RBA Perspective these war room stories from years ago where a business, that Operational had a major government contract on its books, announced in a resilience. meeting that the contract was being terminated and it was now being tendered to the whole market. What the business found that they could sustain things for 2-3 months, through running off current contracts etc. Then the Bernie McCrea, team worked out what they needed to do, which was to start RBA Chairman building up a pipeline of alternative revenue streams for such an event. When the event actually happened 12 months later, they had already done the planning! What I’ve been thinking about recently is operation resilience. It is many things to many people, but I see it as a business that The people who participate in the war rooms don’t need to be can sustain a number of shocks, without, a) materially effecting your everyday management direct reports, but could actually the bottom line in the short-term, and b) emerge into the future, be a smaller “Hit Team”. This will give them an ownership confident in your financials. perspective that they didn’t have before. You can also rotate these events, so it isn’t management leading all of the thinking. In a sporting sense it’s similar to a yellow card where you have to go one person down a few weeks and then you ask, what if Under the Companies Act, you are not allowed to operate there was another yellow card event? Alternatively, how long will recklessly so you do require some alternative/contingency plans your business survive if it has a red card for something? to be set up. Issues such as; losing a key account, changing government policies, banks changing terms, suppliers tendering Much of why you receive a yellow card is from things that can contracts, goods getting stranded at a port, a competitor be planned for, e.g. when the exchange rate drops you can buy making a similar product, someone hacking your computer forex cover, if interest rates go up, you can take a fixed rate loan systems are plannable events. etc. But what planning have you done if you lose a key player or, if you want to pull the pin on a key account that will hurt you Remember, your biggest strength is your biggest weakness. So, short-term? set up a war room and see how far your operational plans can go in unchartered waters. One of the best ways to plan for this is to create a ‘war room’. What you do is call in your trusted people and suddenly Bernard McCrea, RBA Chairman, announce a major change that they wouldn’t expect. They then General Manager Life & Health, Abbott Insurance have an hour to plan a response to this event. The consequences for our economy, jobs and the environment are too serious if we fail to respond to climate change responsibly.” A key proposal being forwarded by the Government is the Zero Carbon Bill, which will put a new target in legislation that sets a long-term goal for reducing emissions.
