Rationale for Awards Why do we work? For money? For success, fame, honour, self realisation? For the good life? Each of us is driven by an entirely different set of compulsions. But one thing is certain. Some professions are meant for those who want to make money and some, for those who want to discover themselves. For example, teachers are clearly not those who enter the profession in search of money though it’s true that some teachers today are indeed very rich. But, gamblers are clearly in the casino to make money but most of those who enter a casino come out flat broke. The pursuit of mathematics, on the other hand, can go either way. You can become one of the greatest scientists of our time. Or you can, if you are so inclined, build a fortune on Dalal Street using your love for numbers to outwit others. Even when you succeed in your calling, rewards can differ. Some become, like Mukesh Ambani, owner of the most prized enterprise in the country. Others become, like Sachin Tendulkar or Shah Rukh Khan, unqualified leaders of their own profession. There are others like Narendra Modi who are blessed with the opportunity to change the nation’s destiny, should they want to. Or like Sunil Mittal who, while building his huge personal empire, has changed India forever through his telecom moves. Ambition always begins with a dream, a purpose. And even though money may be an important part, it is doubtful if it really matters that much. Most people strive, excel, achieve for reasons other than money. It’s the desire to prove themselves. Even those who we frown upon, a Ramalinga Raju or a Linda Lovelace were actually pursuing the same objective, each in their own, unique way. But not all those who strive, succeed. That’s where the role of awards and public recognition comes in. Awards do not only acknowledge success; they recognise many other qualities: ability, struggle, effort and, above all, excellence. For every Shah Rukh who succeeds and hits the jackpot, winning wealth, fame and honour, there are hundreds of equally gifted actors who do not make it. Not because they are any less talented but because life has this curious habit of being unfair, even to the best among us. Guru Dutt killed himself out of sheer disappointment. For every Sachin, there are hundreds of brilliant young sports people in India who never get the grooming and the break they need. And, even when they do, they are stymied at every level by a disrespectful system. We come to know of them only when they win an award and are outed before the media. Would you have heard of Mahasweta Devi or Aruna Roy, MC Mehta or Deep Joshi were it not for the Magsaysay? Would you have gone out and bought Kiran Desai or Aravind Adiga were it not for the Man Booker? That’s where awards play a crucial role. Not everyone’s lucky to get the money and the rah-rah he or she deserves. Those who do not, manage to get by because of the support and recognition awards give them. When the history of cinema is written, Satyajit Ray will be remembered for his great films. He may not have made money from them. Some of his negatives may be irretrievably damaged. But the awards endorse him as one of the century’s greatest film makers. Likewise, every year, some truly remarkable Indians win fame and encouragement to pursue their excellent work through different awards. The most notable among them are the National Awards: the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Bharat Ratna. But, very few, only a miniscule get these awards in the gigantic country of India with a huge population of 1.3 billion. How often do we find ourselves looking for third party endorsements before we purchase something new? An award from TripAdvisor for example, can have a positive impact on a hotel or restaurant and bring new business. It is crucial for any organisation, in Business or the Arts to gain recognition for its products and services. Winning an award allows to distinguish an organisation from competitors and ensures that as many potential customers as possible are aware of its products and services. Awards recognise and reward the efforts of an organisation and its staff. Awards can also raise awareness of the brand in the following ways: Differentiation. As each organisation strives to achieve stand out in an increasingly difficult and changing market, awards set an organisation apart from competitors and differentiate the quality of its achievements from others. Visibility. Awards can make an organization and its products and services more visible. They can attract new customers, investors and others by giving an organisation an edge over its competitors.
Validate. Awards speak volumes about an organisation’s products and services and provide third party endorsement of its achievements. Being nominated or shortlisted can be helpful because it places the organisation at the forefront of its genre and industry. Testimonials. Being shortlisted or wining an award serves as testament to an organization’s work ethic, dedication and unique specialty. The award attracts customers who will be more likely to consider an organization’s products and services over another if it has won an award. It also serves to reinforcing the loyalty of existing customers. Considering the benefits and the positive impact awards can have on employees, customers and the organisation itself, it can be important to make submission for awards a critical part of an organisation’s marketing strategy. That’s why we value the Indo-Global Awards for Excellence. That’s also why it’s important that they are chosen carefully, transparently and wisely. EDUCATION Indian educational system has been undergoing a paradigm shift in the recent past. India has the world’s second largest post-secondary student population of around 30 million. India has over 864 universities and university-level institutions and over 50,000 colleges, and yet the gross enrollment ratio (GER) is low with only 25.2 per hundred accessing higher education. India is far behind the developed countries' average of 50 per hundred. The Government of India has set a GER target of 30 per cent by 2020 and for that to be achieved; the number of universities and colleges will have to be increased while enhancing the quality of existing institutions. A major challenge is educational excellence. India has islands of excellence but the overall education standards are poor. The report that 60 to 70 percent of engineering graduates churned out are not employable, speaks about the quality of higher education in India. None of Indian universities are in the list of top ranked universities in the world. All this needs to change. Faced with a growing demand for post secondary education and limited resources, India is looking towards private / public sectors and foreign universities to bridge the projected gap. The private sector has been given the opportunity to take initiative in developing infrastructure for higher education in the country. India is a member of the WTO and has now become a signatory to the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS), thereby enabling high quality educational services to be offered in India from around the world. Further, the Indian economy is transforming into an international powerhouse requiring India to have the best possible educational opportunities for its citizens. While efforts like the Indian Institutes of Management Bill granting financial autonomy to IIMs and a competition to identify 20 Indian universities that have potential to become world class are welcome, what is needed is a complete re-imagination of higher education. Universities can no longer be seen as instruments of disbursing political patronage. Research and training need to be closely linked to industrial needs with greater collaborations across universities encouraged. It is time to unshackle higher education and make institutes global in outlook and relevant in deliverables. The Indo-Global Awards for Excellence 2018 aim at building the future excellence by felicitating achievements of Indian higher educational institutions, individuals and service providers for improving the quality of Higher Education delivery in India, through visionary thinking, process innovation and disruptive technology. Now in its eleventh edition, the Awards celebrate the exemplary work of the institutions, organisations and individuals. Sharing of good practices through this platform will surely help to raise the status of learning and teaching in Indian Higher Education sector. * Awards for Educational Excellence: These awards are presented to educational institutions from around the world in recognition of their educational excellence in various fields. HEALTHCARE The Indian healthcare industry is growing at a rapid pace and is expected to become a US$ 280 billion industry by 2020. Rising income levels and growing elderly populations are all factors that are driving this growth. In addition, changing demographics, disease profiles and the shift from chronic to lifestyle diseases in the country has led to increased spending on healthcare delivery. Even so, nearly one million Indians die every year due to inadequate healthcare facilities and 700 million people have no access to specialist care. 80% of specialists live in urban areas. In order to meet manpower shortages and reach world standards, India would require investments of up to $20 billion over the next 5 years. India produces over 250,000 doctors annually in the modern system of medicine. A higher number of nurses and para-medical professionals and practitioners of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy are also produced. Better policy regulations and the establishment of public-private partnerships are possible solutions to the problem of manpower shortage. As incomes rise and the number of available financing options in terms of health insurance policies increase, consumers have become more and more engaged in making informed decisions about their healthcare and associated costs. In order to remain competitive, healthcare providers are now not only looking at improving operational efficiency, but are also looking at ways of enhancing patient’s overall experience. These exceptional, proactive and ahead of the curve institutions are the ones leading the way for the Indian healthcare industry. Indian Healthcare Market - A Key Player in the Global Healthcare Industry The Indian healthcare sector has emerged as one of the largest service sectors in India. Healthcare spending in India is expected to rise by 12% per annum. As per an estimate, during 2012, healthcare spending contributed 8% of GDP and employed around 9 million people. Rising incomes and growing literacy are likely to drive higher per capita expenditure on healthcare. The trend is shifting from infectious diseases to lifestyle diseases. The medical equipment market is growing at a rapid pace. The demand for hi-tech products is close to 80 percent of the overall market in India. Major international medical equipment companies are lining up their investments in India for setting up local bases. Over the past few years, medical tourism has gained momentum in India. An increasing number of patients from developed countries are getting quality health services in India for less than half the price prevailing in their countries. India is becoming a popular medical tourist destination in Asia. At present, medical tourism is a 2 billion (dollar) business and is expected to grow substantially in the future. Over the last five years, the Indian pathology industry has been growing at an estimated compound annual growth rate of 20% per annum. Many of the renowned Indian pathology laboratories are expanding globally by signing outsourcing contracts with hospitals in Europe and other countries for pathological services. Outsourcing of pathology and laboratory tests by foreign hospital chains is becoming a huge opportunity because of the high cost differential in India. The Indian Pharmaceutical Industry is expected to grow in double digits. India is now one of the top five emerging pharmaceutical markets in the world. There will be new drug launches, new drug filing, and phase II clinical trials
throughout the coming years. On back of increasing sales of generic medicines, continued growth in chronic therapies and a greater penetration in rural markets, the Indian domestic market will continue to expand. The industry is expected to touch US$ 35.9 billion by 2016 and US$ 55 billion by 2020. The Indian pharmaceuticals market has grown in confidence and has firmly moved on to an accelerated growth path. In a ground breaking endeavor to present to the nation, finest healthcare providers, the Indus Foundation has initiated the Healthcare Excellence Awards - country's most authoritative awards for the healthcare industry. The awards will be a grand event which will witness the coming together of the entire healthcare community. With leaders from private and government organizations, policy makers, representatives from the government and key people from sector affiliates, all assemble to recognize and applaud the achievements of the best healthcare providers. Each Award recognizes excellence in healthcare as manifested in the varied ways that may significantly impact the health and well-being of our citizens. Teaching in any healthcare field Excellence in Nursing Excellence in Auxiliary Healthcare Excellence in Allied Health Sciences Special Awards Lifetime Achievement Award Healthcare Entrepreneur of the Year AGRICULTURE Agriculture in India is the pivotal sector for ensuring food and nutritional security, sustainable development and for alleviation of poverty. It is the key sector for generating employment opportunities for the vast majority of the population. Since quite some time, agriculture sector, as a whole, has been confronted with numerous challenges linked to food and energy crisis coupled with climate change and degradation of natural resources. This sector also influences essential ecosystem services such as water and carbon sequestration. - VISION 2030 (Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi) Facts about Agriculture in India • India has the largest area in the world under pulse crops. • India is the first in the world to evolve a cotton hybrid. • India has the world's highest percentage of arable land to the total geographical area, in the world. • About 50% of India's geographical area is used for agricultural activity. With the spread of irrigation facilities, the introduction of high yielding variety of seeds and farm mechanization, the vulnerability of the Indian agricultural sector to the vagaries of the monsoons has declined, compared to earlier. • About 80 percent of India's farmland is used to grow India's main foods--grains and pulses, the seeds of various pod vegetables, such as beans, chickpeas, and pigeon peas. • India has the world's largest cattle and buffalo population. These animals are not butchered for meat, but farmers keep cattle and water buffaloes for plowing and for milk. Most commercial milk production comes from water buffaloes. Hides from cattle and water buffaloes are used for leather after the animals have died. Sheep are raised mostly for wool and sheepskin. • Dairy accounts for nearly 26% of the total value of agricultural output. India has the world's second highest production of milk. India possesses 26 good breeds of cattle and six breeds of buffaloes. India's cattle is renowned the world over for its quality of endurance and resistance to tropical diseases. • India grows more than half of the world's mangoes and leads all countries in the production of cashews, millets, peanuts, pulses, sesame seeds, and tea. • The nation ranks second in the production of cauliflowers, jute, onions, rice, sorghum, and sugar cane. • India is a major producer of apples, bananas, coconuts, cofSponsorship contribution, cotton, eggplants, oranges, potatoes, rapeseeds, rubber, tobacco, and wheat. • India is also the world's largest grower of betel nuts, which are palm nuts chewed as a stimulant by many people in tropical Asia. It is also a leading producer of such spices as cardamom, ginger, pepper, and turmeric. • In terms of gross fertilizer consumption, India ranks fourth in the world, after the USA, the erstwhile USSR and China. • India lives mainly in its villages, 600,000 of them
• Agriculture provides livelihood to about 65% of India's labour force. • Agriculture contributes nearly 33% to India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) • Agriculture accounts for about 10% of India's exports. • The farmers and their families use most of their crops. Half of all Indian farms are less than 2.5 acres (1 hectare) in area. Only 4 percent cover more than 25 acres (10 hectares). About two-thirds of the farmers in India own their own land. Most of their farms become smaller and smaller with each generation because of inheritance customs. Agriculture is the dominant sector of Indian economy, which determines the growth and sustainability. About 65% of the population still relies on agriculture for employment and livelihood. Indian agriculture however, has milestones. The green revolution transformed India from a food deficient stage to a surplus food market. In a span of 3 decades, India became a net exporter of food grains. Remarkable results were achieved in the fields of dairying and oil seeds through white and yellow revolutions. The sector could not however maintain its growth momentum in the post green revolution years, the strategic growth in agriculture and the accelerated growth in industry reversed the structure of national GDP in Indian economy. Despite these major structural transformations, the agriculture sector continues to accommodate the major share of the workforce. The sector is prone to output fluctuations even after establishing better input facilities and technology like irrigation, high yielding seeds, changes in cropping pattern etc. Today the attention has been shifting to high- value crops from traditional crops. This is expected to enable a desired transition in Indian Agriculture from stagnation to a growth path. The competitive advantages that Indian agriculture possesses are (a) Favourable agro- climatic zones (b) Large irrigated lands (c) Gap between present productivity and potential productivity and (d) Availability of skilled, educated, technical and scientific manpower. To leverage the global competitive advantage, Indian agriculture needs intervention in the areas of policy, technology and market access. SKILL DEVELOPMENT It is well known that skill and knowledge are the fulcrums to a nation’s development and economic augmentation. In today’s global scenario, countries boasting of higher and better levels of skills are understood to adjust more efficiently to the opportunities and challenges in the work field and thus deliver results. In India, the working age population is far in excess of that is dependent on them. A positive marker of the development of the economy of the sub-continent, this demographic situation can be a potential source of significant economic strength. But this is possible provided the skills of the population are enhanced and continuously upgraded. Finding and keeping workers with the knowledge and skills to get the job done is critical in today’s workplace. Today’s knowledge-based economy is increasing the demands on workers skill levels. A skilled workforce is often the key to a company’s growth and stability, and it could be the determining factor in the success of the business. Business and industry in the sub-continent is facing shortage of skilled people. This shortage directly affects their productivity and growth. The primary challenge faced by business and industry in the sub-continent is a shortage of 76% of technical and skilled manpower. As per estimates, only 4% of population of the sub- continent is skilled compared to 68% in the UK, 75% in Germany, 58% in the USA, 80% in Japan and an enviable 96% in South Korea. It has been estimated that 60% of fresh graduates from the education system of the sub-continent are not readily employable. There is thus a huge opportunity and a challenge in building the required infrastructure for overcoming the shortage of skilled manpower. An important feature of the Indo-Global Awards for Excellence 2018 would be presentation of Skill Development Awards to honor and recognize individuals, institutions and organizations in private sector, public sector, NGOs, Government departments, etc who have demonstrated their commitment to the advancement of skills by implementing skill development and training programs that are relevant and result oriented.
