The contributions of women are numerous but there’s a long way to go before gender equality in society is reached, writes President Milone-Nuzzo in her monthly column. “COVID-19: Something for Everyone” is the latest entry from Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Alex Johnson. Inaugural Social Justice Research Conference The inaugural Social Justice Research Conference, sponsored by the Office of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, was an afternoon of discussions and presentations. Keynote speaker Dr. Lori Patton Davis, chair of the Department of Education Studies at The Ohio State University, presented “Masks, Mattering, Magic and Movements: Exploring the Challenges and Opportunities to Support Minoritized Students in Higher Education” at the March 26 event. Afterward, plenary presentations and breakout sessions provided the opportunity for students, alumni, faculty, and staff whose research raises awareness to highlight their work about various JEDI issues. Initiative to Support Student Health and Wellness Launched The new Wellness Council will help coordinate support for students’ current mental, emotional, and physical health needs, and guide the Institute toward best-practice strategies and resources to meet and exceed future needs. U. S. News & World Report Ranks Nursing Master’s Program Third Highest in Boston The Master of Science in Nursing program moved up two positions in the national publication’s 2022 Best Graduate Schools list. Caldwell to Receive Honorary Degree at 2021 Commencement President Emerita Ann Caldwell will receive an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at the 2021 Commencement in August. Among the many accomplishments during her 10-year tenure from 1997-
2007 was stabilizing the school’s finances and finding the IHP a permanent home with the purchase of the Catherine Filene Shouse Building. Christopher Norman, CSD’07, Virtual Race a Success More than 100 participants took part in the Christopher Norman Virtual 5K, raising over $4,800 for the Christopher Norman Fund. The fund, which honors the 2007 CSD graduate, supports student involvement in various educational activities such as help with attending conferences and thesis research support. Contributions to the Christopher Norman Fund to support current and future CSD students are always welcome. Mike Boutin, assistant dean for faculty and student success in SHRS, presented at two conferences. On March 5, he and Dominique Murphy, MMSc, PA-C , a PAS instructor, presented “Peer and Self- Assessment: More than Just Accountability? A Re-evaluation in Light of Backwards Design” at the Team-Based Learning Collaborative’s annual conference. On March 11, he presented “Sinking into Grief: Issues of Bereavement & Loss in the Advising Relationship” at the Region 1-2 Conference of NACADA, the association of professional advisors, counselors, faculty, administrators, and students working to enhance the educational development of students. Joanna Christodoulou, EdD, director of the Brain, Education, and Mind (BEAM) Lab, joins the Professional Advisory Board. She joins other experts who will help guide the nonprofit’s program activity and advise its staff and board of directors on educational needs, program opportunities, policy development, and strategic planning. Tiffany Hogan, PhD, CCC-SLP, director of the Speech and Language (SAiL) Literacy Lab and a professor of CSD, has been appointed as an affiliated faculty at Boston University’s Center for Antiracist Research. The affiliate program is an interdisciplinary network of scholars from Boston University and the greater New England area who will bring their expertise and unique disciplinary perspectives towards the goal of investigating and dismantling racism at multiple levels, from the structural to the interpersonal.
Dr. Abraham Ndiwane, EdD, MSc, RN, CHES, an associate professor of nursing, has been chosen by the National Black Nurses Association Collaborative Mentorship Program to be a mentor in 2020-2021. “I believe that providing guidance and defining one's program of research trajectory and serving as a resource and mentor is key to accomplishing faculty goals of scholarship and research,” he said. Dr. Kimberly Truong, PhD, executive director of the Office of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, received the inaugural Rising Star Award from the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education. She also was named to the list of 50 of the Most Influential People of Color in Higher Education by Get Konnected!, Boston’s premier inclusive business networking event series. Jim Vitagliano, assistant dean and registrar in the Office of Enrollment Services, is one of the first people in the country to receive national certification from the North American Association of Commencement Officers in academic event planning. The certification, the first of its kind in North America, makes him a specialist in commencement and academic event planning. Three other OES staffers are in the two-year program: Antoine Blalark is in his first year, and Anna Cottrell and Laura Stengle are in their second year. The Commencement 2020 production team placed fifth out of 27 presentations at the recent 2021 North American Association of Commencement Officers. The presentation was titled "Creating a Memorable Virtual Commencement Experience." The team is comprised of Anna Cottrell, Selena Craig, Liz Pipes, Jorge Sanchez De Lozada, and Jim Vitagliano. Grants Dr. Joanna Christodoulou, EdD, director of the BEAM Lab, was awarded a three-year grant from the National Institutes of Health in which she will study factors that impact reading skills over the summer. She will focus on how socioeconomic status and reading difficulties may factor into summer reading progress, which is more important in the context of the coronavirus pandemic. She will work with school districts to enroll elementary school-age participants in this study, and train IHP graduate students in virtual testing procedures to better prepare them for their own clinical practices.
