Pat Mahon Our events are still modified for safety, but even so EDITORIAL STAFF they are opportunities to reconnect with each other and recover what we’ve lost over the past year. We were unable to enjoy the benefits of a fruitful Communications, Branding summer last year, which makes us appreciate this & Marketing Manager summer all the more. In addition to our standard Julia Perla Huisman summertime festivities, we are also adding new and exciting attractions such as the Heritage Contributing Writers House—the former American Legion/VFW Hall that Bob Bong has been newly renovated, the Pitch Hit & Run and Home Run Derby put on by Major League Baseball, Josh Bootsma and a brand-new ice cream shop in Town Center! Eunice Escobar (See page 4 for a sneak peek.) Carrie Steinweg Lastly, I’d like to offer my gratitude to the hard- Photographers working teachers of South Holland, whom we are Lawrence Bickerstaff honoring in this issue. They have endured many challenges while teaching through a pandemic, and Josh Bootsma yet they’ve remained steadfast and loyal to their Mark Hall students. We salute them and wish them a fun and Michelle Hamstra relaxing summer! Designer Don A. BAC K HOM E AGA I N SOUTH HOLLAND RESIDENT DEDICATED TO LIFE OF SERVICE By Carrie Steinweg Photos by Michelle Hamstra Geni Cutler has fond memories of her childhood in South Holland, growing up with an older brother in a family where faith and service were emphasized and on display by their parents. Her parents were small business owners who ran DeYoung Furniture store. Cutler moved from her hometown in adulthood, spending 23 years living in Lansing before moving to Dyer—and then back to South Holland six years ago. “We wanted to move to suburban Cook County because that’s where my work is,” Cutler says. “I asked my husband if he’d mind taking me southholland.org 9

Thank You, TEACHERS! May is National Teacher Appreciation Month, designated to recognize educators for their hard work throughout the school year. This year in particular brought unprecedented challenges to educators due to the pandemic. Many teachers had to teach virtually for most or all of the school year. Those who taught in person had a new set of circumstances to worry about: masks, social distancing, quarantining of exposed students, to name a few. Teaching can be challenging in ordinary times, and teaching in a pandemic adds a whole new layer of adversity. Yet, the following South Holland educators embraced the challenge and did everything they could to keep their students engaged, educated and safe. We wanted to take this opportunity to recognize them by name and thank them for their service and unwavering devotion to our kids, in a year of all years! Heritage House LEGION HALL GE TS A NEW LOOK By Julia Perla Huisman Photos by Michelle Hamstra The American Legion/VFW Hall, located at Van’O Park, has long been a facility that South Holland residents could rent out for smaller functions. This spring, the Village completely renovated the hall, transforming it HH into a bright, beautiful space nearly unrecognizable from what it was before. With its charming new look, the hall will now be a premier spot for intimate events such as baby/bridal showers, small weddings, birthday and anniversary parties, and business gatherings. Crisp white walls have taken the place of the building’s dark wood paneling, H E R I TA G E and a decorative ceiling treatment has replaced outdated foam ceiling tiles. Large windows were added to the space, bringing in lots of natural HOUSE SOUTH HOLLAND light, and warm farmhouse doors add character to walls with storage 16 MAY | JUNE 2021
spaces. The kitchen and restrooms have also been revamped, and the building’s exterior received a makeover as well, with brand new siding and signage. The name has changed along with the look. While the American Legion/VFW Hall remains a part of its identity because of its ties to South Holland’s history, the rental hall will now be referred to as Heritage House. This moniker harkens the building’s historical nature while also matching the warmth and sophistication of its interior. This beautiful facility will be highly desired and therefore is available for South Holland residents only, on a first come-first served basis. It is best used for smaller functions of 50-60 people. RATES Monday-Thursday: $60 per hour Friday-Sunday: $300 for 3 hours, $75 per additional hour For use of kitchen: $50 To reserve your reservation, fill out a rental form at southholland.org or call the South Holland Community Center at 708.331.2940. southholland.org 17
