Dear South Holland Residents and Friends,
                                                               ADMINISTRATION
We are embarking on a summer of renewal. South
Holland is coming alive again, with more and more Village Administrator
in-person events on the calendar and businesses
opening and re-opening. From the Memorial Day
                                                                   J. Wynsma
Parade to July 4 fireworks to drive-in movies and
cruise nights, this summer will feel a lot more like Deputy Village Administrator
years past… but even better! Pat Mahon

Our events are still modified for safety, but even so EDITORIAL STAFF
they are opportunities to reconnect with each other
and recover what we’ve lost over the past year.
We were unable to enjoy the benefits of a fruitful Communications, Branding
summer last year, which makes us appreciate this & Marketing Manager
summer all the more. In addition to our standard Julia Perla Huisman
summertime festivities, we are also adding new
and exciting attractions such as the Heritage Contributing Writers
House—the former American Legion/VFW Hall that
                                                                  Bob Bong
has been newly renovated, the Pitch Hit & Run and
Home Run Derby put on by Major League Baseball, Josh Bootsma
and a brand-new ice cream shop in Town Center! Eunice Escobar
(See page 4 for a sneak peek.) Carrie Steinweg

Lastly, I’d like to offer my gratitude to the hard- Photographers
working teachers of South Holland, whom we are Lawrence Bickerstaff
honoring in this issue. They have endured many
challenges while teaching through a pandemic, and
                                                                Josh Bootsma
yet they’ve remained steadfast and loyal to their Mark Hall
students. We salute them and wish them a fun and Michelle Hamstra
relaxing summer!

                                         COMMUNITY CENTER REOPENING

On April 12, the South Holland Community Center
reopened to members, as Phase 1 of the overall
reopening plan. As COVID-19 cases have continued
to decline and the vaccination rate increases,
subsequent reopening phases will occur. Please visit

Geni Cutler has fond memories of her childhood in South Holland, growing up with an older
brother in a family where faith and service were emphasized and on display by their parents. Her
parents were small business owners who ran DeYoung Furniture store.

Cutler moved from her hometown in adulthood, spending 23 years living in Lansing before moving
to Dyer—and then back to South Holland six years ago. “We wanted to move to suburban Cook
County because that’s where my work is,” Cutler says. “I asked my husband if he’d mind taking me

Thank You,
    TEACHERS!
May is National Teacher Appreciation Month, designated to recognize educators for their hard work throughout the
school year. This year in particular brought unprecedented challenges to educators due to the pandemic. Many
teachers had to teach virtually for most or all of the school year. Those who taught in person had a new set of
circumstances to worry about: masks, social distancing, quarantining of exposed students, to name a few. Teaching
can be challenging in ordinary times, and teaching in a pandemic adds a whole new layer of adversity.

Yet, the following South Holland educators embraced the challenge and did everything they could to keep their
students engaged, educated and safe. We wanted to take this opportunity to recognize them by name and thank
them for their service and unwavering devotion to our kids, in a year of all years!

Heritage House LEGION HALL GE TS A NEW LOOK

The American Legion/VFW Hall, located at Van’O Park, has long been a
facility that South Holland residents could rent out for smaller functions.
This spring, the Village completely renovated the hall, transforming it

                                                                                  HH
into a bright, beautiful space nearly unrecognizable from what it was
before. With its charming new look, the hall will now be a premier spot for
intimate events such as baby/bridal showers, small weddings, birthday and
  anniversary parties, and business gatherings.

Crisp white walls have taken the place of the building’s dark wood paneling, H E R I TA G E
and a decorative ceiling treatment has replaced outdated foam ceiling
tiles. Large windows were added to the space, bringing in lots of natural

                                                                                   SOUTH HOLLAND

spaces. The kitchen and restrooms have also been
revamped, and the building’s exterior received a
makeover as well, with brand new siding and signage.

The name has changed along with the look. While
the American Legion/VFW Hall remains a part of
its identity because of its ties to South Holland’s
history, the rental hall will now be referred to as
Heritage House. This moniker harkens the building’s
historical nature while also matching the warmth and
sophistication of its interior.

This beautiful facility will be highly desired and therefore
is available for South Holland residents only, on a first
come-first served basis. It is best used for smaller
functions of 50-60 people.

RATES
Monday-Thursday: $60 per hour
Friday-Sunday: $300 for 3 hours,
$75 per additional hour
For use of kitchen: $50

To reserve your reservation, fill out a rental form at

Center at 708.331.2940.

                                  By Evangelist Joyc e Walker

We can all attest to the fa ct that we are living in troubled
times. In these troubled times, however, the C hristian has
safet y in the Lord Jesus C hrist.

Psalms 37 has good spiritual medicine for almost any problem
a person mig ht fa c e. When experiencing ma jor stress and
problems, Psalms 37 provid es God-given wisdom and a plan
of a cti on for experiencing the pea c e of God that surpasses
all und erstanding, a supernatural pea c e that transc ends
circumstanc es.

C hristians have nothing to fear if we tr ust in God and know
that He is in c ontrol. We are admonished not to fret or worr y.
Fretting and worr ying is a choic e. Sinc e we cannot c ontrol the
                                                                     Joyce Walker
c onditi ons, our job is to tr ust God and wait patientl y on Him.
The best weapon against worr y is p rayer. We can cast all our
cares on the Lord and he will see us throug h any situati on.

We must tr ust God’s word, His Love and His divine plan for our lives. Proverbs 3:4-
5 also c onfirms this: “Tr ust in the Lord with all your hear t, lean not to your own
und erstanding, in all your ways a cknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” God is
for us and God is on our sid e. Let’s tr ust Him!

Now that spring is here, we wanted share the impor tanc e of planting trees and the
benefits that they provid e our neig hborhoods.

1. Trees help to c ontrol ground water and prevent flooding.

2. Trees reduc e storm water r unoff by capturing and storing rainfall in their canopy and
releasing water into the atmosphere.

3. Tree roots and leaf litter create soil c onditi ons that promote the infiltrati on of
rainwater into the soil.

4. Trees help slow down and temporaril y store r unoff, and reduc e pollutants by taking
up nutrients and other pollutants from soils and water throug h their roots.

5. Trees transform pollutants into less harmful substanc es.

In the Midwest, the trees that are most popular are: American Basswood, American Elm,
C ommon Ha ckberr y, Eastern White Pine, Honey Locust, Redbud, S hagbark Hickor y, and
S ugar M aple.
