Question: What’s going on with this Tommy Hawk situation? I’ve heard he is suspended, which seems
ridiculous. I think Tommy is great, and I can’t imagine Black Hawks games without him. –Scott D.

Answer: We love Tommy too. At this time, we have been advised not to talk about what’s happening
regarding Tommy Hawk beyond the information which has been posted at waterlooblackhawks.com.

Question: What is the USHL playoff format this year? –Darryl W.

Answer: This year, 12 of the USHL’s 16 teams will skate in the Clark Cup Playoffs, six from each
conference. As in past years when the USHL has had this number of qualifiers, the two top teams in each
conference will receive a first round bye, with best-of-three series pitting Seed 3 vs. Seed 6 and Seed 4 vs.
Seed 5. This year, the second round will also be best-of-three, followed by five-game series in the
Conference Championship and Clark Cup Final rounds. Information about Waterloo Black Hawks playoff
tickets will be released in early April.

February Recap
At Their Best on Home Ice
During February, the Black Hawks earned nine of 10 possible points from five games played at Young
Arena. Waterloo was 4-0-1 in those games, including four nights when the Hawks scored at least four
goals. Overall, the team was 4-3-1.

Garrett Schifsky led the Hawks’ offensive efforts with nine points and five goals in eight games. Patrick
Geary produced a team-high seven assists. Tucker Ness topped Waterloo with a +5 plus/minus differential.
In net, Emmett Croteau notched three of the team’s victories and delivered a save percentage of .910.

Early in the month, Daniel Sambuco made his team debut after a trade from the Madison Capitols. Besides
a goal and an assist in February, he also showed his versatility by playing defense on multiple occasions.
Waterloo also welcomed goaltender Jakub Tichy who played briefly during the third period of the Hawks’
February 26th win against the Des Moines Buccaneers.

John Waldron also returned to the lineup after a mid-January injury. The veteran forward exploded for four
goals and two assists during the final weekend of the month. That showing was enough to earn Waldron
the USHL’s Forward of the Week Award for the first time in his league career. It is just the fourth time this
season a Black Hawk has been a Player of the Week.█

Business of Hockey
Joe Greene is president of business operations for the
Black Hawks. He joined the organization in 2015.

Our game on February 26th was a lot of fun for everyone except the Des Moines
                          Buccaneers.

Of course, it was great to get the win. Seeing the home team score nine goals
might only happen once every couple of years. The free Chick-fil-A sandwiches
were assured before the second period was five minutes old. Waterloo even had
the opportunity to welcome new goalie Jakub Tichy during a low-pressure third
                          period debut.

For the players, the season ticket holders, and the casual fans, the evening was all the better with 3,200
people in the building. That last Saturday in February was our biggest crowd since before the coronavirus.

Let’s do it again!

As a season ticket holder, there’s a good chance you have rain check tickets which can be redeemed. If
you’ve missed some games this winter, there are eight nights left to bring out friends, family, or even distant
acquaintances. Two things we ask: stop in or call for redemption at least 48 hours ahead of the game and
make sure you give the tickets to people who will show up.

If you’ve been to all 22 home games (and were even here on that night when Omaha wasn’t), there’s still a
way you can bring some friends for free. Renew your season tickets now, and you’ll receive four
complimentary buddy tickets per seat as a ‘thank you’ for your support.

Help us fill up Party Town at this crucial time of year, and let’s make some new Black Hawks fans in time for
the playoffs.█

He scored 20 goals during his final 30 games that season.

7. Defenseman Adam Cardona’s grandfather, Yvon Lambert, played in nearly 700 NHL games and won
multiple Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadiens in the 1970s.
8. Remember John Siemer? He had 13 points in 33 games for the Hawks back in 2010/11. Seven of those
13 points came in one game against the Chicago Steel on March 23, 2011.
9. How about Mario Puskarich? In his 2009 debut as a Hawks affiliate, he had a goal and three assists
during an 8-7 win against Sioux Falls. He would play in just two more Waterloo games and only 31 for the
Tri-City Storm.
10. Forward Paul Weisgarber terrorized the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in 2006/07 and 2007/08. In 20
regular season and playoff meetings, Weisgarber scored six goals, including one that earned Waterloo the

goal in a 2008 playoff series-clinching game.
11. Since the USHL switched to all-junior rosters in 1979,
there have been 26 Black Hawks who have recorded at

Bissett, Jason Blake, Joe Pavelski, Craig Smith, J.T.
Brown, and Vinnie Hinostroza) have gone on to reach the
NHL.
12. Jacob Jeannette’s father, Jeremy, spent two seasons
playing for the Madison Capitols. His USHL career
included 50 points in 85 regular season games.
13. Defenseman Ben Stadey played in 171 games over
four seasons before his #23 was retired in 1995.
14. During the 1996 playoffs, Waterloo was supposed to
meet the Fargo-Moorhead Bears, but the Bears went out
of business before the series. Sioux City had missed the
playoffs, but the Musketeers were quickly rounded up to
replace Fargo-Moorhead. Sioux City won the best-of-
seven series in five games.
15. On November 9, 1985, the Black Hawks demolished
the Thunder Bay Flyers 18-3. The 18 goals are a record
Jacob Jeannette is a USHL legacy.

Petersen served as an emergency back-up for several games in 2010 when he was just 15.
18. Former USHL referee and supervisor of officials Scott Brand served as Waterloo’s interim head coach in
the spring of 1996. Of the nine games in which he held that title, he was ejected or suspended during four
of them.
19. Carolina Hurricanes prospect Jack Drury had a Gordie Howe Hat Trick when he was a USHL rookie. On
April 1, 2017, he scored a goal, added an assist, and dropped the gloves with Cedar Rapids RoughRider
Dalton Messina during a 6-1 Hawks win.
20. You’ve heard the phrase “Give Blood, Play Hockey”…that’s was U.S. hockey legend Herb Brooks did

21. John Loquai played in 29 games for the Hawks in 2002/03. In the years that followed, he gave up
hockey to become a competitive speed skater.

traveled there for exhibition games in 1971, 1972, and 1975.
24. For part of two seasons, Scott Murphy and Mike Brown served as Waterloo co-head coaches. Murphy
and Brown were both ejected from a game on February 20, 1982, perhaps the only time in hockey history
that one team has had two head coaches ejected on the same night. The game against Sioux City ended in
a 4-4 tie.
25. The Hawks have had some tough years, but none as bad as the 1986/87 Omaha Lancers, who finished

meeting with Cedar Rapids, 6-2.
37. In what was arguably the worst trip home in team history, the Black Hawks lost in Des Moines 10-2 on
February 4, 1984. Waterloo’s bus was caught in a winter storm and didn’t arrive back at McElroy Auditorium
until 1:30 p.m. the next day.
38. During a different trip to Des Moines on February 26, 1983, Hawks forward Mike Duffey scored six
goals. Waterloo lost the game 7-6 in overtime.

shutout in four consecutive games. In a separate February sequence, the Hawks were held without a goal
in three straight.
40. Waterloo was rarely shutout when Paulie Johnson was on the ice. The top scorer during the Hawks’
