No. 32 MAY 2020 Happy Feast of the Ascension of the Lord Introduction: My dear Confreres, When faced with fear and anxiety, decease and natural calamities, war and violence, we are inclined to raise a question: “Where was God, when bad things happen?”. This question arises in our minds during these days of Pandemic that has paralyzed all our activities, plans and projects, destroyed the economy and employment. On the one hand the Pandemic has brought down the pride of human nature and on the other it has elevated us to trust in God, to be merciful and compassionate. In the minds of the people there is an element of returning to God and to raise our hearts and minds in deep faith and surrender to the almighty. Today we begin to believe that when we kneel before God, God stands up for us, when God stands up for us nobody can be against us. 1
Relief Activities in the Province : As part of our involvement to fight against Covid-19, and to provide food and provisions in our missions, the Visakhapatnam Province immediately reached out by donating Rs. 15,000/- each, to the missions in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala. A second phase of the relief work was carried out by pooling local contribution from the staff of our schools and contribution from our confreres. A part of our pocket money was donated. The staff of our schools sacrificed a day’s salary towards this noble cause. All together an amount of Rs.12,35,000 was raised and was distributed to all our missions depending upon the vastness of the parishes. As part of our contribution to the government to fight against Covid -19, we donated Rs. 15 lakhs to the Chief Minister’s Fund. A number of the school premises were used by the civil authorities to accommodate the people stranded and to make use of the ground as market, in order to maintain social distance to avoid the crowded markets. Many of our confreres were directly involved to reach out to the poor and needy. I congratulate them for their initiatives and boldness. Thanks to our confreres in abroad, who donated some money to be distributed to the people of our parishes. NEWS FROM OUR CONFRERES ABROAD CANADA : CATHOLIC PRIEST ADAPTS TO PANDEMIC REALITY Amid the dark days of COVID -19 Pandemic, Thompsonites have been dealing with fear, uncertainty, isolation, loss of work and income, loneliness and doubt in a world unimaginably turned upside down. In all the chaos we turn our faith but find we are unable to gather in our churches. Our beloved parish priest Fr. Guna Msfs.of St. Lawrence, who comes from India, a country where people adapt to adversity with creative solutions can often be heard saying, “ Everything is possible!” If you were to visit India you would understand why he says this Mantra. With this same creativity Fr. Guna has made it possible for his parishioners to gather in Spirit by doing live telecasted Sunday Masses and Posting them on St. Lawrence Facebook page all through the Easter season, including our most cherished HOLY WEEK. By offering prayers and distributing Holy water, (even door delivery of Holy Water) he encourages us to pray in our own homes and made our homes little churches by requesting us all to have a place of worship and asked us to place our fears in GOD’s hands. 2
On Palm Sunday, he did a special blessing of the Palms by having his Parishioners gather in the parking lot of St. Lawrence, blessing the palms while people remained inside their own vehicles. Fr. Guna has given us a continuity of practicing our faith in an ever changing world. For his own love and concern for the community of Thompson, on Easter Monday, he did a blessing of the 4 directions and Coronavirus protection prayer in the North, South, East and West locations in the city of Thompson. Fr. Guna has had to adapt a Funeral Mass for the person died with the attack of Covid 19, by having it Video recorded and sent to a family who were unable to attend Mass due to the distancing rules. Also, he has encountered several checkpoint stops enroute to do a funeral Mass in the community of Cross lake, which is nearly 300 kilometres. Even though the Pandemic has changed how we do things, he continues to find ways to support the community in this crisis and bring a message of Hope, rising to the challenges of spreading the GOOD NEWS in these most troubled times. Reaching out to all Thompsonites by Radio and Video he sends special messages. Fr. Guna Msfs, reminds us all to look out for one another, love our neighbour, and in time we will overcome this and also encourages us to pray for a fast End to this Pandemic. Frs. Guna, Subash, Santhakumar, Francis Reddy and Dhanraj are keeping fine and doing good. Thank you so much dear Father, I remain in love and prayers, – Fr. Guan Msfs. TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO: A REPORT OF MSFS MISSION AND STATE OF CONDITION OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO IN TIME OF CORONA VIRUS. The whole world has been going through a great deal of anxieties and uncertainties due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The global widespread of this corona virus compelled the government of Trinidad and Tobago to stop all gatherings and the congregating of people in large numbers. As a result, public religious services and other church activities were canceled. Funerals and weddings were allowed to be conducted with a maximum of five persons. All these restrictions began as early as the 15th of March, 2020. During this unprecedented time, MSFS priests initiated the live-streaming of holy Mass in the parishes. Many parishioners have been watching live- streaming of holy Mass every day and making spiritual communion. 3
As the number of persons testing positive for Covid-19 rose, the government of Trinidad and Tobago took the decision to have a complete lockdown of the country, allowing for only essential services to continue. This meant that all schools and many businesses were closed which resulted in the loss of employment or loss of income for a majority of the population. The lockdown was initially proposed to run for three weeks but it was later extended for a further 14 days until the10th of May, 2020. Presently, the country has a record of one hundred and sixteen Covid-19 patients and eight deaths. Fortunately, the Ministry of Health reported no new Covid-19 cases over the past two weeks. The government of Trinidad and Tobago is being appreciated for putting in place strict and necessary measures at the early stages of the outbreak in the country. During this challenging time, MSFS priests in Trinidad showed their missionary enthusiasm and courage, through their pastoral availability to the sick and vulnerable whenever they were called out. As all family members are at home and have no chance of attending spiritual activities, we created a roster of family prayers to inspire family prayer time. It was encouraging when some parishioners expressed their gratitude for touching base with them through the phone calls being made to them individually during the lockdown and isolation. MSFS missionaries also did not forget the poor and needy during this hard time. As people were in need of food, we did not hesitate to organize food hampers for them through various groups in the parish. It was a great opportunity to exhibit Fransalian compassion and love for the poor. On the 21st of April, 2020, all the community members gathered together for a community meeting and Mass on the occasion of Fr. Jose’s 37th ordination anniversary. It was a great joy and relief as the members met each other for the first time after a long period of confinement. Thanks to Frs. Santhosh, Jose Marie, Prabhudas USA : Dear and Very Rev. Fr. Chinnappa Reddy, Loving greetings to you. Hope and pray that you are keeping fine. As you know due to lockdown, life is different. Concerning my life and ministry; I am keeping fine. This lockdown has given me the opportunity to spend some extra time in prayer, adoration, reading some books, talking with family members, confreres, friends, exercising, working in the garden etc.. I do give online Mass via Facebook. Since our rectory and office are in same 4
building, it’s very convenient for me to be present at the office to answer phone calls and attend anybody who comes. There are a few positive covid 19 cases in our two towns. Parishioners are good to me and assured their help in case of need. Let us continue to pray and hope that the Risen Christ may carry us through these difficult days just as it carried the Apostles of Jesus. Thanking you for all your support and concern, Yours sincerely, Fr. Aneesh Dear Father, Thanks for asking me to scribble few words of ministry during pandemic time. As you know the religious activities have been stand still and not a word of hope is announced in near future. Still I am staying connected with my parishioners through social media like streaming the mass and drive through confession and sending out daily gospel reflection and the saint of the day. Summer is here and all the trees getting bloomed and all the leafless trees has been budding and blooming. The best time to spend my time outside working preparing good flower garden and vegetable cultivation. The daily physical exercise has been in full swing. Spiritual activities like office of the readings, recitation of rosary and daily celebration of Eucharist has been done . Easter Blessings Fr. Jomon Palatty Greetings from Kola Prakash We celebrated, the Triduum in simple way, where as The Easter Vigil, Easter Sunday, Divine Mercy Sunday and indeed the entire Easter season is ongoing Long Island, we remember the power of the Risen Christ so eloquently captured in the resurrection narrative of the four Gospels. We had a Drive through on Divine Mercy Sunday, placed big Divine Mercy Pictures at the parking lot. We had 4 stops on drive through: 1. Getting Holy water bottles 2. Sunday collection dropped in boxes, 3. Handing over spiritual books and Diocese Newspaper, 4. Easter blessings by Fr. Ted and Fr. Kola at the exit point. It was huge turnout. Around 600+ showed-up on the sunday. We continue live stream during this crisis (Covid -19 ) everyday two Masses in English and Spanish, Rosario / Rosary, Night Prayers, Spiritual talks, Weekly Holy Hour. 5
Our office is opened daily and we continue regular confessions and in emergency service by phone call we visit. I’m sharing some pictures of events from my parish during Corona virus. dear Father Provincial and your administrative body for your timely support and continued prayers. I am assigned here as an Associate Pastor and I am blessed with a wonderful Pastor. We are also blessed to have a retired priest and a seminarian staying with us in the same Rectory. We do mostly morning and evening prayers together. We gather at the dining table mostly at the same time unless it is our day off. Retired priest is a great spiritual leader and he is helping me as my spiritual father and confessor. I am blessed with a beautiful chapel in the Rectory to continue my Morning Adoration to the Blessed Sacrament, Holy Rosary and Personal Prayers. Now, especially, during this “Stay at Home Order” I am able to join 5 different Parish Prayer Groups doing the Holy Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet and Bible Discussion (Scripture Celebration). I am missing our MSFS Local Community Recollection due to Stay at Home Order. As an Associate Pastor I am not very much directly involved with the Parish Administration Responsibilities but I try to attend all the Parish council Meetings (now everything is on Zoom live). I am doing the daily and weekend Masses through live streaming. I am offering Regular Wednesday and Saturday Regular Confessions about an hour and half for my Parish faithful. I am doing Drive- Through Confessions and many are very much appreciating it. I am still going to the Hospis and Nursing Homes offering the Sacrament of Anointing and the Last Rights almost everyday (only for emergencies). I am also offering the Sacrament of Reconciliation by Appointment as many are wishing to come unusual time maintaining the social distance. I am continuing to help a few Parish people with online spiritual direction. We are continuing to do the Baptism, Wedding and Funeral Services following the given State rules and regulations. I am safe and not exposed directly to anyone affected with virus as two priests are specially assigned in our Region to take care of the victims’ spiritual needs by giving those two priests a special training. Now we have good weather and I began my outdoor evening physical exercise. However, trusting in God’s mercy looking forward to the quick end to this pandemic. You are all dear loving fathers in my humble prayers. I do very much need all your kind prayers. You may continue to pray for me and for the MPHM Parish. Yours obediently, Fr. Ratna Swamy Nannam MSFS 7
Dear Rev. Fr. Provincial, Greetings from Fr. Baburaj Pinninti. Bishop Carl A. Kemme in collaboration with the bishops of Kansas, sent a decree that effective at 1:00 p.m. March 17, 2020 and until further notice, all public celebrations of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in the Diocese of Wichita are suspended in light of evolving developments of the pandemic of the Corona virus, COVID 19. All masses offered by priests are to be private, according to the Liturgical Norms and not open to the public. Pastors are reminded of their canonical obligation to offer one mass per week for the people. The Faithful are encouraged to participate in live stream masses For a week long I did not understand how to go about with my ministry. I was celebrating my masses in private, praying my Divine Office, an hour Adoration every day. Sometimes I used to say Rosary with my family members through WhatsApp by group calling. I found good time to read the Bible. I found more fulfillment with myself. 1. Blessing the Houses Blessed Sacrament Though I was happy with my spiritual life, but however, I found little vacuum, little emptiness with regard to my ministry. It has been hounding me, I was very much thinking that I was not able to reach out to people. I had been asking the Lord how to reach out my people in the Adoration, at this period of time, because I felt a complete disconnection from them. And I received an inspiration in adoration, saying “go to their houses with Me”. I reflected for a week, and finally I asked the Vicar of the Priest of our diocese, whether I would go to each house, with Blessed Sacrament , standing outside of the house, keeping at least 10 feet distance from the people, and talk to them for a while and pray for them and bless them with Blessed Sacrament. The Priest Vicar said, “your idea is excellent, go ahead”. Henceforth, I visited all the houses with Blessed sacrament, and prayed over them and blessed them with blessed Sacrament. There are around 200 families in our parish and I had the great chance to see all the families. The response from the people was amazing. It was a great consolation for them. There were many who received the blessing with tears and great devotion. Though it took for me three weeks to visit all but I found lot of satisfaction. 2. Live Streaming the Daily and Sunday Masses through Facebook Since 26th April 2020 I started live streaming, Sunday and daily masses through Facebook page (St. Joan of Arc Parish, Harper, Ks). I also did 8
live streaming the Holy week service. I found on Sundays more than hundred people joined mass on live and the rest watched later and week days more 36 people joined mass on live. There were good many people who came during Holy week for confession and made good confession. On line classes on the Sacraments and Sacramentals During this quarantine period I started taking classes through Facebook page on every Wednesday and Friday at 8 p.m. on sacraments, on grace and on sacramentals. They also send their questions ahead of time, so that I have time to prepare and to explain them. To my surprise there are more than 40 people are viewing. I found really happy to be in touch with my parish community during self-quarantine. I got a very positive response from people. A good news is that, the church collection has also increased. They are either mailing or coming to the church and dropping their tithe. MSFS Apostolic community. Our Fathers are staying Healthy and Staying at home. We, our Kansas Apostolic community is in touch with each other, either by group call or text messages. We are doing well. Our Bishops are happy with our ministry. They have great appreciation with our ministry. I do maintain some flower garden and vegetable garden at my leisure. Our greetings and prayerful wishes to you and to our confreres in India. Yours in Christ Jesus, Fr. Baburaj Pinninti Dear Rev. Fr. Provincial, Greeting from Fr. Nusi Konda Reddy, Weekdays I celebrate my daily mass followed my morning prayer. Every Wednesday from 6 pm to 7 pm confessions with social distance. Weekend. Saturday from 5 to 6 pm live streaming mass. on sundays I have private mass. First four weeks I sent Bulletin and my homily by post to every family in the parish. Since one week I am sending bulletin and my printed homily to those who have asked by post and rest of the people receive my homily and bulletin on FB and website. We help elderly quarantined people with groceries home delivered. Rest of my time I spend to bring up my garden and composing hymns to occupy myself. Thank you and God bless you. Fr. Nusi 9
MINISTRY DURING COVID 19 Dear Fr. Provincial, This is to bring into your kind attention the ministry and life that I had and having during the Pandemic Covid 19 and the lock down. First of all I thank God Almighty for granting me the good health and protection during this most difficult time. May his name be praised. Due to the complete lock down I didn’t have any public Masses. Everyday I do have my private Mass with two of my staff members. I did offer Masses for the intentions of the faithful and the Parish. Being a pretty small Parish and the limited resources I didn’t have any live telecasting. But I had all the services without fail very specially during the Holy week. We do send our weekly bullettin before every weekend through post and email attached with my Sunday Homily. People are also responding well with their weekly contributions. We also maintain constant touch with the Parishioners over the phone, email and timely letters. During this time I left open the Church for the people to have their private prayers. I never denied confession for anyone who asked for it. I did celebrate private Mass for couple of families on their special occasions. I had administered the sacrament of Baptism with the restricted number of people. Due to the lock down and the restrictions I couldn’t visit the nursing homes but I had video call with the inmates who wanted to speak with the Priest. Looking into my personal life, I had a lot of free time and that helped me to spend some more extra time for personal prayer and could spend more time with my family and friends over the phone. I had the golden opportunity to brush up my cooking talents too. Over all it was a great challenging time yet enriching as well. I do specially thank you Fr. Chinnappa for all the love and concern that you show towards me and all the confreres particularly during this most difficult time. I do promise my prayers for you and your administration. May God bless us. Fr. Noble Dominic Dear Respected Fr. Chinnappa Reddy, It is my sincere hope and prayer that you are doing well and staying healthy. I am writing you today to update you on a few things happening around our parish. First of all, I want to thank you for your phone call; checking 10
on me and my wellbeing during this pandemic. And thank you for your words of encouragement and support. It is a joy as a religious priest to be united with our religious family/province even from a distance. This is indeed a challenging time but it is filled with hope and opportunity to “Go out to all the world and tell the good news.”God is indeed moving my ministry into high gear and for that I am quite grateful to be seeing how God is moving on me and in our parish. As you already know, USA has been at the top of the chart globally with extremely high number of COVID-19 cases and deaths. And Florida has been in place 8in USA with 38,000 positive cases as of today. And it is said that we have 75 positive cases in 3mile range of our parish. But our work of evangelization has not stopped. First of all, I am humbled by the generosity and support of our parish family during this crisis. I have been encouraged by the innovative ways our staff and our volunteers, who have been very creative to stay connected with our parishioners and ministries without being able to celebrate together on campus. We have been able to maintain outreach efforts. Our school and Religious education program is in full force with online studies and continue to progress toward their sacraments this year. While the RCIA candidates did not have the opportunity to celebrate the Eucharist at the Easter Vigil, they also continue to learn more about our faith through online programs and appreciate your prayers as they anticipate the time in which they will come into full communion with our parish. I wish to share with you some of the highs and lows of this time for me. Relationship Building seems to be the priority, even before the onset of COVID-19 but even more important and necessary at this time for our parish. We are praying our way through a new landscape that is demanded by the digital age.I am delighted to share with you that several of my parishioners, that are not normally involved in the traditional sense of the church i.e. Lectors, Eucharistic Minister ‘s or Ushers for example, or living out their ministry by sharing their talents and knowledge of communications and digital media. They are as generous with their treasure as they are with their talent and they tell me that they quite enjoy this one on one time with their parish priest. While I enjoy this time with them also, it is true that I miss my flock as a whole tremendously, particularly during the celebration of Mass.I am looking forward to their return. 11
I truly believe that when this virus is over and our churches reopen, we will all be better for it. I have heard from many parishioners that this social isolation has created rejuvenation in their love for the Eucharist and a renewed appreciation for our parish family. In the meantime, I am kept quite busy Sacramentally but it is a bit different now. Everything is online: Livestream of daily Mass at 8:30am, Livestream of the Sunday Mass at 11am, Livestream of Adoration from 3pm to 4pm with Divine Mercy Chaplet Monday thru Saturday, Vespersat 6:45pm and Rosary at 7pm Monday thru Saturday. You can find all livestream Masses and other devotions on Facebook Live or our website at https://www.holyspiritchurchjax.org. Some of our Masses have 2000 plus views. But the greatest pain parishioners are going through is deprivation from Holy Communion. Funerals are limited to a maximum of ten people and the inability for families to grieve as a group is heart breaking. Anointing of the sick continues and is as much a source of comfort to the patient and their family as it is for me. I go for these visits wearing gloves and mask. Seeing Jesus working in these people at this difficult time is a blessing. Reconciliations are given by appointments either in the office, Rosary Garden or at the abandon picnic table at the school. I think the parishioners enjoy the fresh air and beautiful weather during this time.(Since the stay-at-home order has been in place i.e. March 18, I have been hearing at least 10 confessions a day). Preparation for marriage, confirmation, and first communion, continue but the actual dates have been postponed until we are all able to gather. The First Holy Communicants drew pictures of themselves. Cut them out and then taped them to the first three pews.I think it’s the first time an American Catholic willingly sat in the front row. In some respects, I feel I am busier now then even before, thanks be to God.The business of the parish continues as well with the various councils continuing to meet in support of the church via Zoom! The finance council was quite effective in obtaining Federal loans for the Parish and the school. This is indeed a blessing. Our Parish school classes have all moved to online classes and are doing quite nicely. Other ministries have also moved their meetings online and continue to grow spiritually. We continue to have Adult Group Bible Study on Sundays of course now online. 12
One on one Spiritual Direction has also continued and I find that the content of our conversations has taken on a more focused and directed tone to really want to seek and know the Lord. I am so grateful to be able to be present in these moments. Other moments of encounter have included my making over 300 calls to parishioners 65 years or older. Volunteers and office staff working from home have called the rest of the entire roster of families (We have 1190 families). I coupled these calls with the purpose of updating all contact information as well and it has been quite successful. We were successful in building several prayer trees. Unfortunately, several of our parish families and families in our area were touched by this pandemic, whether it be illness, loss of a loved one or loss of a job. To let them know Christ loves them and we as the church are with them and for them, we have formed outreach teams with in the existing ministries. Our Men’s Club, Knights of Columbus and Saint Vincent de Paul Society have been quite active in reaching out to the needy in our neighborhoods. We were able to provide groceries and pay water and electric bills and for some house rents. Outreach has also taken some other forms as well. I write weekly letters to the parishioners, livestream Mass and Adoration daily, making short videos of hope and encouragement, create content in the form of a pastor’s blog for our parish website, Facebook, etc... Our churches biggest challenge seems to be our operating within this new digital landscape which we find ourselves. Our people share with me how they find this to be a valuable tool for Evangelism and Education. I am beginning to understand the need for this digital ministry to be developed. Just as Jesus went to meet the people where they were at, so to must we go and meet ours where they are at-on their screens. This may allow us to continue to meet our people where they live so that we may win their minds and hearts for Christ. I realize that Jesus traveled miles of uncharted roadways through the unknown to the people and, now as sojourners of Christ, we are now called to travel the new horizon of the digital pathways that lead into people’s homes and businesses. “Blessed are all who fear the Lord and walk in his ways! Please know you are in my prayers and I request you to pray for me and for our people. Sincerely yours in Christ and Mary, Fr. Amar Nagothu, MSFS 13
Thanks to our confreres in USA: (Frs. Aneesh, Jomon, Kola Prakash, Dominic Savio, Ratnaswamy, Babu Raj, Amar, Dilip, Konda Reddy, Noble, Benela Antony, Gova Showraiah) who are doing pastoral ministry in USA for their dedicated service during the pandemic Covid – 19. Thank you for your generous contributions towards relief work in the province. Covid-19- In Italy The world is going through a historic painful moment with the ongoing pandemic of corona disease 2019 (COVID 19). Italy is one of the countries that is affected dreadfully with this disease. The first of this case was confirmed in Italy on January 31stin Rome and a week later an Italian man returned from the city of Wuhan, China, was hospitalized and confirmed of Covid-19 and later on it spread increasingly in the region of Lombardy and in the city of Milan in the north Italy. By the beginning of the month of March the virus has spread to all regions of Italy. On 4th March, the Italian Government, under the Prime minister Giuseppe Conte, announced shutdown of schools and universities for two weeks but soon imposed a national quarantine from 9th March 2020 and is extended till 3rdMay 2020. Italy is the second highest mortality in the world due to this virus and as today (30thApril 2020) 27,682 persons lost their lives. This disease affected the life of Italian people who are very social and friendly. Soon everything came to a standstill and the phrase ‘stay at home and save life’ has become catchword in the media. All public secular and religious activities and ceremonies were suspended. With all the other centers of activities churches were also closed for people. In the state of Vatican, till today 10 cases of corona virus were confirmed and treated and has no loss of life. The cities of Rome and Vatican are silent and all the roads to Rome are empty and one could experience a kind of mixed feeling of sorrow and anxiety everywhere. Pope Francis constantly requests people to be united in prayer and also instructed them to cooperate with the government authorities in all matters concerned with the pandemic. He advised the faithful to participate in the daily liturgy and very specially on the Holy Week on streaming media. Pontifical liturgical and prayer services are conducted for an end of the pandemic corona virus. Mainly such as; 14
- To pray the prayer ‘Our Father‘ by all Christians together on 25th March at noon. - The Special Urbiet Orbi blessing on 27th March with the reflection on the gospel of Mark (4:35-41) - The pontifical liturgical ceremonies in the Holy Week in St. Peters Basilica - Via Crucis on Good Friday - 10th April in the Vatican Square. - Urbi et Orbi on Easter Sunday- 12th April. - Daily Holy Eucharist celebrated by Pope at Casa Santa Martha and Rosary prayer in St. Peter’s Basilica and all can participate it on streaming media. - The Angelus Prayer on Sunday and the Papal Audience on Wednesday are regularly conducted. In this way Pope prays for all and encourages everyone to pray. He specially invited the faithful to pray with Blessed Mother Mary the Rosary prayer in the month of May. In Rome, though the liturgical services are suspended for people but the churches are kept opened. Everyone hopes and prays for the normal life soon. All msfs confreres in Italy are safe and healthy and confined to the communities and mission. Fr. Jose Cheriantharayil MSFS Thanks to our confrere in Italy: Fr. Jose Cheriantharayil A BRIEF REPORT FROM MISSION INDONESIA ABOUT THE SITUATION OF THIS GLOBEL PANDEMIC AND OUR MINISTRY TO THE PEOPLE OF GOD We welcomed the year 2020 as usual with lot of enthusiasm and hope that it will be a year of joy, peace, love and good health with the blessings from the Lord. Little did we know that a deadly virus is going to engulf the whole world! Thus the year 2020 will remain in the history of mankind for a long time as an unforgettable and shocking era as we suffered the attack of Corona Virus, which claimed thousands of lives across the globe. Towards the end of February 2020, we in Indonesia started to receive news about positive cases of Corona Virus in some parts of this Islands- Nation. We the parishioners of St. Kornelius, Pohon Bao, started to pray for healing and protection from this pandemic, every day after Communion prayer. We also stated to alert our people regarding this 15
virus and the safety measures to be taken such as; washing hands, keeping safe distance, wearing masks etc, to fight the spread of this disease. By this time the Government of Indonesia has already announced to the people about this deadly decease and the measures to fight the same. In the month of March the Bishop of Larantuka convened a meeting with the local Government authorities and the parish priests of the 5 parishes in the town of Larantuka (which includes the Parish of St. Kornelius) and the lay parish representatives. After a long discussion and deliberation the bishop has officially announced that there would not be public celebration of Holy Mass, prayer meetings and the other liturgical celebrations as a precautionary measure to protect people from the spread of the Virus. In Indonesia as of today (29/4/2020) there are 7,484 active cases, 773 deceased and 1,254 recovered. Our Province (state) of NTT (Nusa Tenggara Timur) is declared as a GREEN ZONE as there are no active cases till date. Nevertheless we have to be cautious and take necessary measures to fight this deadly disease. Therefore we the Pastoral Team together with DPP (parish council) of Pohon Bao decided to celebrate the mass in the presbytery itself and ‘live telecast’ the same through the social media. We also erected a public announcement system (horns) in front of the presbytery so that people can listen and follow all the liturgical services from their homes. It is at this time Fr. Anand came across “the way of the cross” in English, specially prepared in connection with the corona virus. We got it translated in local language and prayed every Friday through the sound system so the people could pray this devotion. We also prayed a novena for the protection and healing from this global pandemic. During the Holy week, all liturgical services were celebrated with a few people and “live telecasted” the same so that the people follow the same from their homes. In preparation for the Divine Mercy Feast on April 19th, we started the novena every afternoon at 3 for 9 days. A special prayer was included to ask for God’s Divine Mercy to intervene during this alarming situation. On Divine Mercy Sunday we had the mass as usual in the morning. In the evening at 4.30 we had the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and implored the Eucharistic Lord to protect and heal us from this Virus. At 5 pm we started the car procession with the Blessed Sacrament and Easter Candle held by Fr. Anand and Fr. Praveen respectively. We drove through the streets and alleys of our parish with the divine music that followed us. It was a heart touching experience for all of us, as people adored and received the blessings of Eucharistic Lord. They fell on their knees in front of their homes and on streets to receive the 16
Blessings of the Lord. The car procession with the Blessed Sacrament took about 2 hours to go around the parish of Pohon Bao. Help to the needy during the pandemic We have distributed 30 packets of Food provisions and sanitizers till date to the neediest people in the parish of Pohon Bao; and the requests are still coming in. We continue to do our best to the poor and the vulnerable during this much time of uncertainty. We continue to pray to the Lord, to end this pandemic and health and strength to HIS people. We pray for our National and Church Leaders, Medical staff, Police Administration, Municipal employees as they continue to care for us. PADA, LAMBATA 2020 As we are aware it’s a time of fear phobia of mental and physical, due to the epidemic covid 19. we are safe under the protection of almighty God here in Lambata. The priests are one wing of advisers to the local government. We too attended the meetings conducted by the Denary, Bupathi of Lambata, and Police Department of Lambata along with other Governmental Officials regarding Corona. We do listen to the health inspectors and workers, strategies given by the Civil authorities of Lambata, we concentise the people took some measures as mentioned below: MISSION SFS DURING COVID 19 IN LAMBATA: PARISH: As per the local civil authorities there are 4 positive and 19 are quarantined in Pada parish territory, inspite of the hardships and challenge we continue to administer sacraments and are enriched in our pastoral ministries. We celebrate the holy mass in the parish and substations with Public Assistance system along with very few faithful by maintaining social distance and also through live telecast of holy Eucharistic celebration, and Holy Adoration. COMMUNITY: Other than the pastoral activities of the parish as a community we are happy and content, we do have our regular spiritual activities like Holy Eucharistic celebrations, Adorations, Rosary and personal prayers.ect…. COVID 19 IN LAMBATA ISLAND: According to Health and Civil Authority statistic, there are 4 positive cases and 25 quarintined in lambata. Especially in SFS Pada parish territory we have 19 cases in quarantine. Due to this our faithful and other religious sects are frightened as we lack the proper medical facilities in our land. 17
OBSERVATION AND INITIATIVE: As per our observation the people with whom we live are below poverty line and not able to support and sustain themselves. We felt the need of supporting and helping our parishioners with basic requirement for proctecting themselves from covid 19. After our 3rd community meeting held on april 4 we decided to provide the masks to all the parishioners. And we started to stitch the 2000 masks with the help of Sisters and Parishioners . GUIDENCE AND INSTUCCTIONS: We do communicate to the faithful to be cleaned the soroundings of the houses, asking the children and the elders to be careful in this situation to wash their hands properly with soaps or hand sanitizers before eating when ever they go out and come inside the house. As we are the care takers of the sheep we do consentise the faithful gravity of the epidemic to other out stations given by the WHO ( world health organization) like hand washing wearing masks using sanitizors frequently, distancing, to avoid unnecessary trips not to spit any where and every where, and to keep the eco in clean. Fr. Antony Baskar Jayaseelan Msfs Thanks to our Confreres in Indonesia: Frs. Anand Prasad, Bhaskar Jayaseelan, Praveen, Ravi and Anil. GERMANY HOLY OR HOLE IN THE FAITH? According to a legend, St. Corona was only 16 years old before she died a martyr’s death and believed to be martyred in Alexandria or Damascus or Antioch. St. Corona was tied to two bent palm trees and then torn when they straightened up again. She is even today considered as patron saint of epidemics and storms, but also the patron saint of people who stand for steadfastness in faith. There is a pilgrim Church dedicated to St. Corona in Bavaria, Germany; in a village called Staudach. And many other such churches dedicated to St. Corona are in the state of Bavaria; such as Sauerlach and many others. And what is the importance of this Saint for us, the Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales who are in Bavaria in Germany today? 41,500 are affected with Corona Virus in the state of Bavaria till today. 1681 people died because of the virus in Bavaria alone. This makes the state of Bavaria as the most affected state in Germany. In this context of crisis, crisis of life, faith and the future, how are we coping with this crisis? Should Corona be prayed to as a saint or should 18
we find creative ways to propagate our faith? So what we do? We do not want to just sit at home and engage our whole time watching TV or using Social Media, we do not wish to sit idle and feel lonely, feel depressed because we are not able to see people, cannot cater to their needs and should not celebrate with people. Neither do we want to give up hope just because we are not sure of the future, unable to meet friends and classmates in the university at present. As the Missionaries of St. Francis de Sales, with the inspiration of the Patron who was filled optimism, we are trying to live as true missionaries and witnesses in these turbulent times. In the first place, we are praying personally our Breviary and Rosary and try to gain strength from these devotions. Many of us are celebrating Masses in the sub-stations without people (although it is painful to say something to the empty pews), some of us are celebrating masses and telecasting live on the media, we are in contact with the people through our phone calls and messages, although personal visits are limited to the anointing of the sick when the family contacts us for the same. We engage ourselves with reading books (equipping ourselves with new trends in theology and liturgy), bettering our cooking abilities (some of us even made pickles), calling each other (specially the superiors who always call and enquire about the well being of the confreres) and meditate on one’s own life. So we believe that this should not be seen as a crisis or a hole in the faith, but an opportunity to walk towards whole faith. And definitely this crisis made us realize the passing nature of human life, but with faith we can still live and help others to live. So, we pray that this situation ends soon and that we may live the normal life again, meeting people, celebrating with them and try to show the real face of God to others. At this point, we would like to specially thank our dear Fr. Provincial and the confreres of the Vizag province who are showing great interest in our well-being and are in touch with us to know the latest situation here. We would like to conclude with this prayer, which we pray everyday: Ever loving Father It is true that Corona is with us… There are people who are sick around me, affected in the village I live, some even die… But, in our world full of noise and sound pollution, we can hear the chirping of the birds again. We look up and see that the sky is no longer thick with smoke, But blue and grey and clear. 19
We see that in the lanes all citizens are clinging the bells coming out of their homes and balconies so that those who live alone and those who help as doctors, police and health workers, may hear the voice of love around them. We see that Churches, Mosques and Temples are willing to give home to the homeless, the sick, the tired. Everyone in the world are realizing and reflecting. Everyone in the world are looking at themselves and the ‘OTHER’ in a different way. Everyone in the world are waking up to a new reality and a new picture of themselves and others… Father, let me realize how important I am. Am I my position? …as principal…parish priest, administrator…etc... Can I control what is around me? Will I not be affected???…what have I achieved??? Whom am I helping with my intelligence, position and money? Lord, teach me what really matters. Let me wake up and to live up to the choices as you made, to stand for justice, honesty and the poor. Let me breathe today, Lord, let me listen to you and to my conscience, let me start all over again…let me listen to the birds singing again Let me see the sky is clearing, Let me experience that spring is coming, And realize that we are always encompassed by Your Love. Open the windows of my heart. Amen. with best wishes, Confreres of Vizag Province in Germany. Thanks to our confreres in Germany: Frs. Dhaman Kumar, Baby, Jose UT, Sylvester, Rajani, Rayappa, Vijay, Amar, Michael Prasad, Shaibin, Sinto, Y. Amar, Mani Panthalany, Naidu Prakash. Thanks to our confreres in Australia : Frs. There are some Practical Challenges before us: 1. How are we going to complete the syllabus prescribed? Is there a plan to reduce it? 2. How are we going to keep the social distancing and having classes? (in a class 50-=60 or 70 ?) 3. Are we allowed to have classes for 3 days for half a class and the rest next 3 days? (Is it practical?) Or can we have half number of students doing some other activities keeping the social distancing norms? Do we have teachers to monitor them? 4. How are we going to sustain our schools without any aid from the government, if parents fail to pay fee? 5. What measures we need to take to control the spread of the virus in our schools? Do we keep sanitizer for all? What about the use of masks and social distancing measures? 6. After the class how are we going to sanitize the entire school campus? 7. What contingency plan have you prepared for giving counseling to kids? 8. School closure also meant loss of the midday meals for so many children. The poor children are distressed, furthering the existing hunger and malnutrition. It is the poor and marginalized children who are most affected by the lockdown. The impact of the pandemic on children is insidious and going to be long lasting. 9. The world today faces a global learning crisis, with the 2030 Sustainable Goals for Education far from reaching the goals. Though many of the world’s children are in school today, 263 million children remain without access. What is our response? 10. The 4Cs – communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking – are absent in the online learning approach. How are we going to make the 4 Cs present in our Teaching- Learning approach if the situation is prolonged? 11. How and what way are we going to modify curriculum, and pedagogical strategies to ensure that students are concentrating and engaged in “normal” classrooms? 12. The lack of android phone at every household and availability of quality e-materials in regional languages are another bottleneck for majority of our students. How are we going to remedy this problem? 13. We must give training to all our teachers on technology that has become essential for learning. But have prepared a schedule for this? 29
