General What does F.I.L.M.S. stand for? F.ocused I.nspirational L.eaders of M.arketing, M.ovies, and S.torytelling The only program with a dual focus on film and visual communications with an emphasis on business marketing… to teach diverse dreamers to create F.ocused I.nspirational L.eaders of M.arketing, M.ovies, and S.torytelling! It is a film-marketing© program! Why is film-marketing© our focus? Because in between film gigs, we want graduates to have independent leadership ability to operate a full-service marketing production company to earn income. To inspire that, we decided to include helping you get incorporated with entrepreneurial support as part of our program. You will have your own film and marketing production company before you graduate. It’s not just films. Our mission is Teaching Dreamers to Create F.I.L.M.S. (F.ocused I.nspirational L.eaders of M.arketing, M.ovies, and S.torytelling) How long is your program? Our Associate Degree program can be completed in 11 months – 14 months depending on whether you take or transfer up to 15 semester credits of general education courses. The Associate Degree program is comprised of 69 semester credits that includes 1,425 hours of inspiring lessons from industry professionals and real-world interactive studio projects in film and visual communications with an emphasis on film and marketing production work. Our Diploma Program is 11 months and comprised of 54 semester credits that includes 1,200 hours of inspiring lessons from industry professionals and real-world interactive studio projects in film and visual communications with an emphasis on film and marketing production work. What are the benefits of a formal education in film and visual communications with an emphasis on marketing? We include marketing so you can earn income in between passionate film gigs. It saves years of gaining work experience. Some professionals consider two years of work experience equal to one year of higher education. With 100-hour courses in 12 interactive, studio environment courses with professional projects, this is earning two times the educational course experience in one year, calculating to four 3 The Institute of F.I.L.M.S 2021
years of work experience. These are more than the typical 45-hour/3 semester-credit college courses taken at traditional colleges and universities. Will I learn from industry professionals? Professionals with experience from Hollywood studios, Emmy© Award winners and nominees, business owners, leading educators, and it’s not just for show. It’s because it is show business. Plus, our leaders have years of top-notch educational leadership experiences too opening new college programs, have doctoral degrees and a Master of Fine Arts degree, with educational institutions that include Harvard University, University of California at Los Angeles, and University of Florida. Altogether, we are Focused Inspirational Leaders of Marketing, Movies, and Storytelling with modern experience! When does the next semester start? The Institute of F.I.L.M.S. has classes starting monthly. What type of computer and computer specifications do I need? Here are your basic specs to look for when using a computer for video editing: Memory/RAM: 8-32 GB RAM or as much as you can afford (ideally at least 16GB) Processor: Multi-core Intel i5/i7/i9 models (i9 is best). Preferably 4 or more processor cores. Storage: At least 256 GB hard drive, 7200 RPM, preferably SSD (fastest), HDD also good... buy as much as you can afford, you can always add external hard drives. Avoid SATA drive if possible. Graphics card: Depends on video editing software. For example, Premiere Pro and Davinci Resolve do well with both AMD and NVIDIA. (Minimum 2GB memory) Operating System: Windows 10 (64-bit edition), Mac OS X, Linux (Your OS will likely determine the editing software you go with) Nice size screen – 19-21 inch minimum Firewire or Thunderbolt Port built-in or as an external dock When do classes start? Classes start several times per year; however, seating is very limited due to our small class sizes. We recommend applying to The Institute of F.I.L.M.S. as soon as possible to have the best chance of getting the start date you want. I have no film experience. Are your programs for me? Yes, The Institute of F.I.L.M.S.’ programs are designed to introduce individuals with little or no filmmaking and marketing experience to the fields, and to reinforce the aspects of good filmmaking and marketing production for those with prior experience or training. 4 The Institute of F.I.L.M.S 2021
How hands-on is the training at The Institute of F.I.L.M.S.? As much as you dedicate yourself. All classes at The Institute of F.I.L.M.S. are designed to be of immediate and practical use. Students are creating production plans, shoot film in camera, lighting, and production classes, are on-camera in our workshops, and develop story ideas in their first screenwriting classes. Do students edit their films on digital editing systems? Students enrolled in The Institute of F.I.L.M.S. filmmaking and digital programs will edit digitally using digital editing software. Admission Do you accept International students? Yes, we do. Our programs are interactive, personal, experienced online so no Visa is needed. Do you accept Military Benefits? We are in the process of applying to do that with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. What is included in your tuition and fees? How much is your tuition? Apply and Schedule an Admissions Appointment to discuss your education as an investment in your future. We are also offering the F.I.L.M.S. Director Scholarship at this time so inquire about that too. What do I need to do to be considered for admission to The Institute of F.I.L.M.S.? a. Verification of a standard high school diploma, verification of general equivalency diploma (GED) of scores or diploma, and verification of signed attestation of home education affidavit of homeschool education meeting state statutes, or demonstrate an ability to benefit (see Application for more info on this latter aspect) b. Submission of a two-page essay or original artwork that reflects an interest in working on and learning about one of the following items: 1. written screenplay 2. a film production book, 3. graphic portfolio of digital graphics or advertising, 4. marketing plan for a product or service, or 5. a directing and production plan for a film. 5 The Institute of F.I.L.M.S 2021
How do I start the application process? Visit our Apply tab to complete the process in approximately 15 minutes. Do you offer financial aid? Financial assistance is for those who qualify. If a student obtains private lending to pay their tuition, financial information assistance will be provided to the student to include that the student understands that he/she is obligated to repay the loan, the terms and amounts of repayments, and when repayments will begin. When is tuition and fee payments due? In order to guarantee a seat in any given start, students are required to pay tuition and fees in full by the tuition due date, approximately 4 weeks before the beginning of classes. Likewise, any student receiving tuition financing must have all loan documentation completed and/or approved by the tuition due date in order to guarantee a seat. After the Tuition due date, all open seats are awarded on a first-funded basis. Do I have to pay for the whole program up front? Yes. How do I apply? You will want to request info by filling out the form on the website Apply Page and clicking submit. After that, an Admissions Representative will contact you about your interest, schedule an Appointment with you, and guide you through the rest of the process. Are there SAT/ACT requirements or high school GPA requirements for admission? No. I have a GED. Can I apply to The Institute of F.I.L.M.S.? Yes. A certificate of General Educational Development from the American Council of Education is considered equivalent to a diploma from a U.S. high school. How do I commit to attending The Institute of F.I.L.M.S.? Students commit to attend The Institute of F.I.L.M.S. by paying their tuition and fees before classes start. These can be paid online, by check or money order. Students who have paid these fees will automatically be assigned classes prior to their enrollment term. 6 The Institute of F.I.L.M.S 2021
How do I register for classes? The Institute of F.I.L.M.S. automatically registers incoming students for first classes after the enrollment fee has been paid. Schedules are tentative and subject to change. Students will receive their official class schedule at orientation and will have the opportunity to make changes if needed. Do you accept home-schooled applicants? Yes, The Institute of F.I.L.M.S. welcomes home-schooled students who graduated with a diploma. How can I obtain information about the English proficiency requirements for International Student Admissions? English is the language of instruction at The Institute of F.I.L.M.S. and students work with English-speaking faculty. The programs rely heavily on writing; therefore, students must be able to communicate effectively in written English. Applicants who do not hold a conferred degree from a secondary or post-secondary school where English was the primary language of instruction are required to demonstrate English proficiency. Demonstrated English proficiency for students whose first or native language is not English: • International English Language Testing • TOEFL scores of 500 PBT/173 CPT/61 iBT • Certification of English language studies • System (IELTS) with a level of 6 or higher • A grade of ‘C’ or better in an intermediate ESL course • Graduation from an English-speaking secondary institution • Notarized evaluation by an agency of an US Bi-national Cultural Center which evaluates the if the student candidates to undertake Institute program(s) in English. • Evidence of having completed 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours with at least a ‘C’ (70%) average an accredited postsecondary institution in which English was the language of instruction. • The Institute of F.I.L.M.S. does not provide language services. 7 The Institute of F.I.L.M.S 2021
When is orientation and how will I know what to expect? Orientation helps familiarize you with life at The Institute of F.I.L.M.S., meet fellow students and our team, discover resources and more. The orientation information online refers to the upcoming classes and our exciting interactive advanced studio environment. It is open to be completed before classes begin. Careers What types of careers may I pursue upon graduation? You build your resume and not just your transcript. Please see our About: Careers page on our website that lists more than 30 careers. What is the difference between the Associate Degree and the Diploma program? Both programs include interactive advanced studio environment career courses in digital film, visual communications and marketing production comprised of 54 semester credits among 1,200 hours, that can be completed in 11 months. Experience in the core courses is real-world experience. The Associate Degree Program only requires 15 semester credits of general education courses in humanities, social science, and science, and these can be taken at The Institute of F.I.L.M.S. or transferred in, or a combination of both. Can I apply for individual courses? The Institute of F.I.L.M.S. does not offer individual online courses, as each course in the program builds upon the knowledge and skills learned in previous courses. What sort of equipment do students work with? At The Red-Carpet Rollout ©F.I.L.M.S. Workshops, students learn how to use this equipment. What is in The Red Carpet Rollout© F.I.L.M.S. Workshops? At The Red Carpet Rollout© F.I.L.M.S. Workshops, you will see how this gear can equip you with not only the ability to create content but make a living as well. No, you do not have to purchase a computer or software through us if your computer and software meets our requirements. How does eLearning work? Each semester is 16 weeks long. During each eLearning course, you will have different projects assigned depending on the course and weekly topics, but generally include personalized hands- on learning during class including equipment training, techniques, reading, creating, discussions and a project. Teams will be created for some projects to reflect an interactive advanced studio environment. Classes are asynchronous and synchronous: asynchronous because you can log in anytime and anywhere, and synchronous because you have designated due dates and Inspiring Industry Professional Times along with team times. Is there a travel option or study abroad at The Institute of F.I.L.M.S.? Students will be invited to consider being a Student Producer, Director, Cinematographer, or Production Designer on a live set together during the Full-length Film Feature. Similar and other roles will also be performed via distance learning. Yes, every graduate works on at least one Full-Length Feature Film during their enrollment at The Institute of F.I.L.M.S. and the premiere will be held at Universal Studios Florida or in Hollywood, California. Will I be starting my own film and marketing production company? In preparation for graduation, yes, you will receive entrepreneurial support and form an official corporation. This way, after you graduate, you can begin promoting your vision and leading others. Will I be presenting a Marketing Launch of a product or service for an existing company during my enrollment? Yes, that is part of one of our courses to give you real-world experience. Will I have an opportunity to be part of the live filming of the Full-Length Feature Film? Will I have an opportunity to create my own Student Film? Yes, and you may also be part of other Student Films too, and all may seek to have Student Films be part of a Film Festival. What types of renowned certifications are included in the program? Students in the Associate Degree Program will have an opportunity to earn four (4) certifications from a selected list. Students in the Diploma Program will have an opportunity to earn two (2) certifications from a selected list. The Institute of F.I.L.M.S. programs will include preparation for renowned certification options from Adobe Creative Cloud, Blackmagic, Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, as part of edX and similar platforms. in fields including editing, graphics, digital marketing, strategic business, film, and others. What does lifetime access to course material mean? It means you can come back after graduation and request the newest latest material being taught as part of the courses you successfully completed so you can apply new knowledge and skills to your career. I read that I will be part of an Inspirational Film too. What does an Inspirational Film mean? We know it is important to give back to our communities in socially productive ways. As students and professionals, we want to help charities, causes, and other community organizations to help get their message out via film and visual communications efforts so you can make a difference in the lives of others. Transfer Credits Will my AP/IB credits transfer to The Institute of F.I.L.M.S.? If you participated in Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate programs in high school and have taken the national exams, you may be eligible to have your score reviewed for The Institute of F.I.L.M.S. transfer credit toward our general education courses. Can I transfer credits from The Institute of F.I.L.M.S. to other colleges? The transferability of credits you earn at The Institute of F.I.L.M.S. is at the complete discretion of the institution to which you may seek transfer. at the discretion of the accepting institution, and that it is the student's responsibility to confirm whether or not credits will be accepted by another institution of the student's choice. If a licensed institution has entered into written articulation agreement with other institutions, a list of those other institutions may be provided to the student, along with any conditions or limitations on the amount or kinds of credit that will be accepted. Such written agreement with other institutions must be valid and in effect at the time the information is disclosed to the student. The agreement will be kept on file at all times and available for inspection by the commission representatives or students. Any change or termination of the agreement shall be disclosed promptly to all affected students. No representation will be made by The Institute of F.I.L.M.S. that its credits can be transferred to another specific institution, unless the institution has a current, valid articulation agreement on file. Can I transfer credits from another school to The Institute of F.I.L.M.S.? Credits applied toward the award of a credential may be derived from a combination of any or all of the following: a. Credits earned at and transferred from other institutions, when congruent and applicable to the receiving institution’s program and validated and confirmed by the receiving institution. b. Credit by examination may be applied to General Education courses if the exam score is at least 70%. Requirements for Transfer Credit Consideration • Students must request transfer credits before the first day of their program. The written request and transcripts must be provided to the Academic Department. Course syllabi may be required. • Students must have successfully passed the technical program concentration specific courses and earned a grade of at least a B or 80 or higher to receive transfer credit for technical program concentration specific courses. • Students must have successfully passed the equivalent of general education courses and earned a grade of at least a C or 70 or higher to receive transfer credit for general education courses. • All transfers must be equivalent to 80% of The Institute of F.I.L.M.S.’ core FILM and MKTG course content and equal to or greater than the existent credits or hours earned. 14 The Institute of F.I.L.M.S 2021
