National Premier League 2021 Floreat Athena FLOREAT ATHENA FOOTBALL CLUB vs. Perth Glory Youth Round 13 Kick-Off Saturday, 26/06/2021 3.00 PM #70YearsStrong #OneAthena Matchday Programme brought to you by: Design and Content: Desiree Durrani Photographer: Owen Gregory
PRESIDENT’S WELCOME Welcome to all players, coaches, sponsors and supporters. Today should be another exciting encounter between Athena and Perth Glory Football Club, and I invite you to enjoy the club's hospitality in the bar and canteen. As we do each week, we have the Big Match Combo for only $10. I encourage you to try our tantalising souvlaki or burgers before they sell out! In club news, the City of Vincent has progressed the proposal for our new change rooms for community consultation. This also includes the move to have floodlighting at the neighbouring Britannia Reserve to be upgraded by the end of the year. This will greatly enhance our capacity for training sessions during the evening to take some strain off the main Litis Stadium pitch. We also have some big milestone events coming up, including ticket sales to the club's 70th Anniversary Commemorative Dinner on Saturday the 28th of August. This event will honour and pay tribute to the heroes of yesteryear and today. It will also include the unveiling of Athena's own "Dream Team". You can purchase tickets through our website or scan and buy directly via the QR code on our flyer situated at the bar service area. Details are also in this program. If you haven't already done so, please get in quick and purchase your tickets as this event will be a sellout. Lastly, a big congratulations to our senior team which qualified for the State Cup Final earlier this week after defeating Cockburn City 3-0 and as a result booked it's spot in the RD 32 of the FFA Cup. This is the third time our club has qualified for the RD 32 in the seven years the Cup competition has been running. Once again thank you for your attendance today and good luck to all players and coaches. FIRST TEAM COACH’S WELCOME Welcome to all players and supporters from both clubs for another exciting weekend of local football. I'd also like to extend a warm welcome to the coaching staff from Perth Glory Football Club. Today marks the first home game at Litis Stadium in a month and I'd like to acknowledge the work that the boys have put in on the road over the last few weeks, especially those who have stepped up when we've needed them to do so. Many have done it because they enjoy playing for one another which are the hallmarks of a united team. We head into Round 13 after winning some hard fought wins over Armadale, Rockingham and Balcatta and a great result on Tuesday night against Cockburn City SC. Our FFA Cup win means that we have secured a spot in the State Cup Final and spot in the Round of 32 of the FFA Cup. However, all that is in the past. Our focus is gaining maximum points from today's match. We go into our match knowing that our opposition will be coming at us strongly. They are a well-coached team and they have proven goal scorers in their squad. We won't be resting on our laurels as we know today's clash against Glory will be another tough encounter for the boys. I would like to thank our hard-working volunteers, the board, our generous sponsors, our members, and supporters who week-in week-out wear the blue and white and turn into that important twelfth man in the stands. Thank you and I hope we can celebrate together at full-time. U20s COACH’S WELCOME Firstly, I'd like to welcome the Perth Glory Under 20s team to Litis Stadium for this Round 13 clash. Earlier this season, we were beaten 3-0 by a very good Glory side away from home. They have since signed one of our most promising talents (Joel Anasmo) and we therefore look forward to welcoming him back to Litis Stadium today. Perth Glory have the pick of the players, and always set the standard in terms of playing style and results. The facilities, coaching and resources they have allow them to train 'full-time' and it is no surprise they are in the running at the top of the league. We look forward to the challenge, and will look to keep our streak going. Here's hoping for an entertaining day of football for all involved. Good luck to Frank & Joe with the 18's and Vas and Adrian with the first team at 3:00pm. U18s COACH’S WELCOME Welcome to all Perth Glory players, coaching staff and supporters to Litis Stadium. Our first round meeting with Glory was a very entertaining game which ended in a 3-3 draw. We showed a great fighting spirit that day, which we will need again today to be competitive with Glory. The boys have trained well this week and we are looking forward to the challenge. Good luck to Vas and Adrian and our senior team, and also to Zack and Ryan and our U20s. Looking forward to seeing you all at the game. Juniors & MiniRoos Report Our skilled acquisition program has been running every Friday for the past few months, spearheaded by our Mini-Roos Technical Director and senior team captain, Dean Evans. The program is designed to offer our budding stars of tomorrow extra training and tips to help their football skills but more importantly, ensure they enjoy the "gospel of the game". Meantime the NPL Juniors competition has two games to go before the competition splits and our four NPL Youth teams are moved into new Divisions for the remainder of the year. Our U16s remain top of the White Division which sees them on track to be matched against powerhouse clubs like ECU Joondalup, Sorrento, Bayswater, Perth Glory and Murdoch Melville. The same team also continues its cup campaign, the only one of our youth teams still in the competition. The competition is tighter for our U15s with either a Division One or Division Two finish coming down to the results of next two games. The U13s and U14s are battling hard with some promising performances and are on track for Division Two or Three placement for the second half of the year. All the teams are continuing to develop with the introduction of dedicated goal-keeping training strengthening their defence and building strong and capable teams from the back. The U16s – Division 2 team continues to improve each game despite being beaten by top of the ladder Peel United SC on Sunday after going into the half time break leading 2 -1. This team of battlers coached by Athena legend, "Professor" Vic Stambelos love to play their own game (regularly ignoring the Professor’s instructions!!) and are looking forward to a strong second half of the season with the recent recruitment of a full-time talented goalkeeper. Our three U12s teams (2 mixed and 1 girls) continue to impress with their development and commitment. The future looks bright for 2022 as these players transition into full-pitch competition. Many thanks to the three coaches of these teams who stepped up this year and took on the role. Our littlest players, the U6s and U7s Miniroos, have just completed a successful four-week cluster rotation at our home ground on Britannia Reserve. Many thanks to President Con Poulios and team who have, at the crack of dawn for four consecutive Sundays, set up the pitches for the club superstars of the future. It was fun to see the younger club members developing their skills and wish we them all the best for their next rotations. That leaves our U8s, U9s, U10s and U11s to wrap up our Junior mid-season report. There have been some tough matches teaching the players resilience and good sportsmanship, skills which will serve them well for the future. Well done to all teams so far! Credit: Matt Dudarz
FAFC NEWS FFA CUP: To the State Final we go! Our boys put on a brilliant show on Tuesday’s Semi-Final Clash against Cockburn City SC. We were off to a fantastic start with a goal at the second minute, putting us 1-0. The boys managed to keep the pace, stay cool and netted 2 more goals in the second-half. Photo credits: Peter Kapsanis Our Tuesday night’s semi-final victory puts us in the Round of 32 of the FFA Cup and into the State Cup Final. We will face ECU Joondalup SC for bragging rights on Saturday, July 17 at a venue yet to be announced. Bogan Bingo Night 2021 Friday 28 May 2021 saw some of our #OneAthena families tear up the behaviour rule book and rock out at the almost annual Bogan Bingo fundraiser. The music pumped, the air guitars howled, the mullets moved and the numbers got crossed off on a fun night out as punters battled it out for some great prizes. Congratulations to the many winners on the night and thanks to the Junior parents for organising a fantastic night. Photo credits: Glowbooth Perth Fundraisers like Bogan Bingo wouldn’t work if it wasn’t for the generosity of our prize sponsors. Many thanks to: Oxford Hotel, Perth Wildcats, Sinikka Leather, Luna Cinemas Optus Network, Ash & Oak Boutique, John the Fruiterer, Goodlife Gym (Floreat), Spudshed and of course, the generous donations from families and friends.
