 India on July 26 celebrated the 19th anniversary of
  Kargil Vijay Diwas to mark the success of ‘Operation
  Vijay’ and to remember the supreme sacrifice of the
  Indian soldiers who lost their lives during the 1999
  India-Pakistan Kargil War. The Defence Minister
  Nirmala Sitharaman paid homage to the martyrs on
  Kargil Vijay Diwas at Amar Jawan Jyoti in New Delhi.
 Armed Forces personnel and families of soldiers who
  lost their lives in 1999 Kargil War paid their tributes at
  the Dras War Memorial in Jammu and Kashmir to
  commemorate the historic win. Operation Safed Sagar
  was successfully launched by Indian Air Force during
  Kargil war.

   The hotel named 'Hostess' was launched
    by Kerala Tourism minister Kadakampally
    Surendran. A flagship project of the Kerala
    Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC). The
    hotel will come up within six months at the KTDC
    complex.
   Work on India's public sector hotel run entirely
    by women for women is claimed to be the first
    such in the country. The project was a 'milestone
    initiative' of KTDC, considering its purpose,
    security features and facilities of global standards
    at affordable rates.

   The state cabinet of Delhi approved a scheme
    under which farmers in the national capital will
    be able to lease out a part of their agricultural
    land for setting up of solar panels to get
    additional income.

   The scheme - 'Mukhyanmantri Kissan Aaye
    Badhotri Solar Yojna’ was approved at a cabinet
    meeting chaired by the state’s Chief Minister,
    Arvind Kejriwal.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS
 Under the scheme, any farmer can rent out not more
  than one-third of his land to a private firm to set up
  solar panels at a rate of Rs one lakh per annum per
  acre.
 The panels will be set up at a height of 3.5 metres, so
  that the land can also be used for agriculture.
 The annual income of the beneficiary farmers, which is
  estimated at present to be between Rs 30,000 and Rs
  50,000 per acre per year, will increase to between Rs
  1.30 lakh and Rs 1.5 lakh following the implementation
  of this scheme. Besides getting additional income, the
  farmers will also get 1,000 units of free solar power
  without any investment.

   The state assembly of West Bengal unanimously
    passed a resolution on July 26, 2018 to change
    the state’s name to ‘Bangla’ in all three languages
    – Bengali, Hindi and English.

   The name change will only become official when
    the resolution gets the approval from the Union
    Home Ministry.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS
   The move comes almost two years after the West
    Bengal assembly first passed a resolution to
    change the name of the State.
   The state government had earlier submitted a
    proposal to the Centre to change the name of
    West Bengal to ‘Bengal’ in English and ‘Bangla’ in
    Bengali.
   The state government, led by Chief Minister
    Mamata Banerjee, then decided to send another
    proposal of changing the name to Bangla in all
    three languages – Bengali, Hindi and English.

WHY DOES THE STATE WANT TO CHANGE ITS NAME?
 The  main reason for changing the name
  of West Bengal is that whenever there is
  a meeting of all the states, West Bengal
  figures at the bottom of the list, as it is
  prepared according to the alphabetical
  order.

 A bouquet of 32 offerings from 17 countries would
  be on show at the Unicef 18th International
  Children's Film Festival that began in Kolkata.
 The inaugural film Moana, produced by Walt Disney
  Animation Studios, was screened after the festival
  was declared open by West Bengal Governor K.N.
  Tripathi at the Nandan film complex.
 In his address on the occasion, Tripathi urged film
  producers, directors, central and state governments
  to ensure children's films were made in Hindi and
  regional languages.

   After screening of the opening film during the
    day, the second phase of the festival organised by
    Cine Central Calcutta with the support of Unicef,
    Nandan and Talash Society, would be held from 9
    August to 12 August at Nandan, the organisers
    told the media.

   This year the Festival is based on the theme
    'value of girls' to highlight the inequities and
    gender discrimination.

 announced to build a Gandhi Heritage
 Centre in Uganda's Jinja, where a statue
 of Mahatma Gandhi now stands.

 Prime  Minister Modi is currently on a
 five-day three-nation tour of the African
 continent-Rwanda, Uganda and South
 Africa.

 Invest India and Business France have signed an MoU
  to promote investment facilitation and cooperation
  between startups of India and France. The goal will be
  to facilitate direct foreign investment by providing
  practical investment information to enterprises and
  support the companies.
 Invest India and Business France will collaborate to
  promote business and startup ecosystem cooperation
  through joint activities and exchange experiences to
  strengthen institutional knowledge and identify
  opportunities between businesses in the French and
  Indian private sector, creating a dedicated support
  structure to facilitate inbound companies and startups.

   Mobile tower arm of telecom major Bharti Airtel,
    Infratel announced that it has received
    clearance from SEBI for its merger with Indus
    Towers.

   It will now approach the National Company Law
    Tribunal for its approval. The combined company
    will own 100% of Indus Towers jointly owned by
    Bharti Infratel (42% holding), Vodafone (42%),
    Idea Group (11.15%) and Providence (4.85%).

   The Department of Telecom (DoT) has given final
    approval to the merger of Vodafone India and
    Idea Cellular.

   The nod for Vodafone Idea came days after
    Idea Cellular and Vodafone India jointly paid Rs.
    7,268.78 crore 'under protest' to the DoT. The
    entities will now approach Registrar of
    Companies (RoC) for stipulated filings for
    approval, completing the last leg of formalities.
