CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL, NELSON Sunday Bulletin –18th October 2020 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time/Te Rātapu Rua Tekau mā whā o He noa iho 027 Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral, Nelson. + Children are welcome at our services. There are toys in the Quiet Room. Please feel free to take this publication away with you / leave for re-use. Dear Cathedralites, How wonderful it is to host our annual Trafalgar and Sea service. It is certainly a thrill to welcome our guest preacher the Right Hon. Sir Anand Satyanand and his wife Lady Susan. Sir Satyanand was Governor-General of New Zealand from 2006 to 2011. He was also Chair of the Commonwealth Foundation for four years. In 2018 the New Zealand Government appointed him to lead the Royal Commission of Inquiry into historical abuse in state care and in the care of faith-based institutions which is scheduled to continue until 2023. It was through my association with Mike Dormer, the founder of the Willows cricket club that I have met with Sir Anand. Mike is a Nelson College Old Boy and has great memories of this Cathedral many years ago. We are honoured to have Nelson’s mayor Rachel Reese with us this morning. Welcome to all the naval fraternity as we gather at today’s special service. It is not often that we have such an amazing weekend with the elections held on the Saturday and us gathering here on the Sunday. It is wonderful to belong to a nation that has such openness to both politics and religion and for this we thank God. It is also a thrill to have Paul Chan as our organist at today’s service. Paul hails from Hong Kong but has been in New Zealand for some time. I love his gentleness and sense of servanthood. Besides all that, he is a superb organist. It is also good to welcome our Tikanga Maori brothers and sisters here led by Archdeacon Harvey Ruru along with the Revd. Tapita Ching and team. Thank you for all your prayers which will be resulting in a solid and quick recovery from my self- inflicted mountain bike shoulder accident. It is well on the mend and I am looking forward to getting back into it sooner rather than later in spite of a fiery sermon by my surgeon! We acknowledge the Revd. Tapita Ching’s and Marilynna Burton’s very special birthdays this weekend. These two women play a very significant role in our Cathedral community. You know that I have been really perturbed at the possibility that marijuana might be legalised in New Zealand. So, it was great to read a YMCA statement coming out strongly against it.
I am somewhat puzzled why our Prime Minister has not declared her position in this matter. After all, it is one of ethics and morality rather than of politics. The argument that ‘everyone is doing it so let’s legalise it,’ is so erroneous. That being the case, sports betting, tax evasion, driving over the speed limit, use of the ‘f’ word, and eat- ing too much sugar would mean being recognised, normalised and legalised merely as health issues. We have forgotten there were Ten Commandments, not Ten Sug- gestions. Joel Kumar, from Operation Mobilisation, will be preaching at our 7 pm service. Thank you to John Laing and his team of helpers who did the hard work of running yet another faith-based holiday programme, an excellent effort! Next Sunday we remember the persecution of Christians throughout the world. It is absolutely horrendous especially in Saudi Arabia, Northern India, Syria, Afghanistan and Lebanon yet we in the West focus very little on the tragedies and massacres. As Christians we are to be generous as Jesus was in acknowledging the beliefs of oth- ers while standing firm to the Good News of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I hope the All Blacks all had practice at the drop-kick during the week! Sometimes we overlook the basics. But as they all say rugby was the winner on the day. Have a great week. In His service, Mike SERVICE INFORMATION - Hearing Aid Loop available - please turn to the T position on your hearing aid - Ramp for access to the Sanctuary (on the right side) - Special chairs are available from the Pulpit side for those with disabilities or back problems. Nelson’s Prayer at Trafalgar Reverend Nigel Whinney May the great God whom I worship, grant to my country, and for the benefit of Europe in general, a great and glorious victory, and may no misconduct in anyone tarnish it; and may humanity after victory be the predominant feature in the British fleet. For myself individually, I commit my life to him that made me, and may his blessing alight on my endeavours for serving my country faithfully. To him I resign myself and the just cause, which is entrusted me to defend. Amen. The processions enter the Cathedral as we sing the opening hymn CP 413 1 Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who bid’st the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep: O hear us when we cry to Thee For those in peril on the sea. 2 O Christ, whose voice the waters heard And hushed their raging at Thy word, Who walkedst on the foaming deep, And calm amidst the storm did sleep: O hear us when we cry to Thee For those in peril on the sea. 3 O Holy Spirit, who didst brood Upon the waters dark and rude, And bid their angry tumult cease, And give, for wild confusion, peace: O hear us when we cry to Thee For those in peril on the sea. 4 O Trinity of love and power, Our brethren shield in danger’s hour; From rock and tempest, fire and foe, Protect them wheresoe’er they go: Thus evermore shall rise to thee glad hymns of praise from land and sea. The Address The Right Honourable Sir Anand Satyanand Intercessions Representatives from Naval Cadet and Sea Scouts We conclude our prayers by singing the Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Amen We stand to affirm our faith in the words of the Apostle’s Creed All I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again; He ascended into Heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen The Peace Celebrant The peace of Christ be always with you. All And also with you. Celebrant E te whanau, we are the body of Christ. All By one Spirit we were baptised into one body. 1 Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won; angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, kept the folded grave-clothes where thy body lay. Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory Thou o'er death hast won. 2 Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb; lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom; let the Church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, for her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting: Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won. 3 No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of Life; life is naught without thee: aid us in our strife; make us more than conquerors through thy deathless love; bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above: Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son, endless is the victory Thou o'er death hast won. Edmond Budry / G.F. Handel The Great Thanksgiving Celebrant To you, Lord, belongs the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory and the majesty. All All that is in the heavens and the earth is yours, and of your own we give you. Celebrant The Lord is here. All God’s Spirit is with us. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to offer thanks and praise. Celebrant It is right indeed, it is our joy and our salvation, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise through Christ your only Son. You are the source of all life and goodness; through your eternal Word you have created all things from the beginning and formed us in your own image; male and female you created us. 12
When we sinned and turned away you called us back to yourself and gave your Son to share our human nature. By his death on the cross, He made the one perfect sacrifice for the sin of the world and freed us from the bondage of sin. You raised him to life triumphant over death: you exalted him in glory. In him you have made us a holy people by sending upon us your holy and lifegiving Spirit. Therefore, with the faithful who rest in him, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: The choir sings Holy, holy, holy! Lord God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord Hosanna, hosanna, Hosanna in the highest. Please kneel or be seated Celebrant All glory and thanksgiving to you, Holy Father, on the night before he died your Son, Jesus Christ, took bread; when He had given you thanks, He broke it, gave it to His disciples, and said: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this to remember me. After supper He took the cup; when He had given you thanks, He gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins; do this as often as you drink it, to remember me. All sing Glory to you Lord Christ, your death we show forth, your resurrection we proclaim, your coming we await. Amen. Come Lord Jesus. The Celebrant continues Therefore, loving God, recalling your great goodness to us in Christ, his suffering and death, his resurrection and ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate our redemption with this bread of life and this cup of salvation. Accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving which we offer through Christ our great high priest. Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine which we receive may be to us the body and blood of Christ, and that we, filled with the Spirit’s grace and power may be renewed for the service of your kingdom. United in Christ with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, O God, in songs of everlasting praise. All sing Blessing honour and glory be yours, here and everywhere. Now and forever. Amen. 13
The Communion Celebrant We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All We who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread. We do not presume to come to your holy table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your great mercy. We are not worthy even to gather the crumbs from under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the body of your dear Son, Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us. Amen. The Invitation The Celebrant invites the people saying Draw near and receive the body and blood of our Saviour Jesus Christ in remembrance that he died for us. Let us feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. Those in the Sanctuary receive communion as the choir sings the Agnus Dei. The congregation is invited to receive communion at the High Altar. Please come up the centre aisle and return by the side aisles. Wafers will be offered. Gluten free available on request. No common cup. Prayer after Communion Celebrant Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink His cup bring life to others, we whom the Spirit lights give life to the world. All Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name. Amen. Congregation stand while the Ensigns are returned. They are dipped for ‘God save the Queen” All sing: God save our gracious Queen. Long live our noble Queen. God save the Queen. Send her victorious, happy and glorious, long to reign over us. 8.00 am readings Isaiah 45:1-7 1 Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him and strip kings of their robes, to open doors before him— and the gates shall not be closed: 2 I will go before you and level the mountains, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, 3 I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places,so that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. 4 For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I surname you, though you do not know me. 5 I am the LORD, and there is no other; besides me there is no god. I arm you, though you do not know me, 6 so that they may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is no one besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other. 7 I form light and create darkness, I make weal and create woe; I the LORD do all these things. 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 1 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace. 2 We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly 3 remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labour of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 4 For we know, brothers and sisters beloved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because our message of the gospel came to you not in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of people we proved to be among you for your sake. 6 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for in spite of persecution you received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit, 7 so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. 8 For the word of the Lord has sounded forth from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place where your faith in God has become known, so that we have no need to speak about it. 9 For the people of those regions report about us what kind of welcome we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath that is coming. Matthew 22:15-22 15 Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him in what he said. 16 So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, ‘Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not?’ 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, ‘Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin used for the tax.’ And they brought him a denarius. 20 Then he said to them, ‘Whose head is this, and whose title?’ 21 They answered, ‘The emperor’s.’ Then he said to them, ‘Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.’ 22 When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away. 17
5.30 pm readings Psalm 103: 8-14 8. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy: slow to anger and of great goodness. 9. He will not always be chiding: nor will he keep his anger for ever. 10. He has not dealt with us according to our sins: nor rewarded us according to our wicked- ness. 11. For as the heavens are high above the earth: so great is his mercy over those that fear him. 12. As far as the east is from the west: so far has he set our sins from us. 13. As a father is tender towards his children: so is the Lord tender to those that fear him. 14. For he knows what we are made: he remembers that we are but dust. Isaiah 61:1-6 1 The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; 2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favour, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; 3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion— to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to display his glory. 4 They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. 5 Strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, foreigners shall till your land and dress your vines; 6 but you shall be called priests of the LORD, you shall be named ministers of our God; you shall enjoy the wealth of the nations, and in their riches you shall glory. Colossians 4:7-18 7 Tychicus will tell you all the news about me; he is a beloved brother, a faithful minister, and a fellow-servant in the Lord. 8 I have sent him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know how we are and that he may encourage your hearts; 9 he is coming with Onesimus, the faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will tell you about everything here. 10 Aristarchus my fellow-prisoner greets you, as does Mark the cousin of Barnabas, concerning whom you have received instructions—if he comes to you, welcome him. 11 And Jesus who is called Justus greets you. These are the only ones of the circumcision among my co-workers for the kingdom of God, and they have been a comfort to me. 12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, greets you. He is always wrestling in his prayers on your behalf, so that you may stand mature and fully assured in everything that God wills. 13 For I testify for him that he has worked hard for you and for those in Laodicea and in Hierapolis. 14 Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas greet you. 15 Give my greetings to the brothers and sisters in Laodicea, and to Nympha and the church in her house. 16 And when this letter has been read among you, have it read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you read also the letter from Laodicea. 17 And say to Archippus, ‘See that you complete the task that you have received in the Lord.’ 18 I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. Remember my chains. Grace be with you. 18

Readers read for a 15 min. slot. It is a non-denominational, family friendly event and is organised by volunteers from many churches in Nelson with the assistance of the Nelson Gideons. Last year was a great success and we had participants from most churches in Nelson. We believe that it pleased God and brought glory to Him and did our readers good too by getting us to go out of our comfort zones and reading in public. This year we hope for a big audience to be a presence on the day and make the public feel there is something worth hearing. This event is fully supported and encouraged by Dean Mike Hawke.
