Lock Down: Senior Campus News News of a seven day lock down caught us by surprise yesterday. Students seemed to take this in their stride and busily prepared belongings for the next week of schooling from home. Any student who finds that they need an item to assist them with their learning, are welcome to pop into the school to collect it. All students will join a class Webex meeting each morning to mark the roll. Students who miss this meeting, but are completing their school work will be required to email their Year Level Coordinator prior to 1pm each day to be marked present. HSSSD Cross Country: Senior Campus students performed very well at the HSSSD Cross Country. Eve Britton and Ebony Pearce took out their age championship and our team placed second. It is many years since we have taken out a second placing in one of the three major interschool events so the pride and excitement around the campus was palpable. Congratulations must go to all students on their efforts. Thirty students have made it through to the regional event which was to be held in Warrnambool at Deakin University on Monday, but will now be rescheduled to another day. Studio Art: VCE Studio Art students have been very fortunate to hear about what it takes to produce a folio worthy of being in the Top Arts Award. Ms Mann organised a student who achieved this status to visit and showcase her folio. She discussed aspects of her folio and subsequent work. This experience has helped provide the students with increased motivation and direction. Year 12 Dress Up Day: Year 12 students enjoyed dressing up and having a shared lunch to break up the term. Students dressed to the mix-up theme, wearing odd socks and shoes and a variety of clashing colours. They enjoyed a pizza lunch with coordinators, Mrs Maskell and Mr Van. State School Golf – Junior Boys Final: Tom Baker has qualified to play off in the State Golf Final for junior boys following on from his success at regional level. The game was scheduled for today at Gardner’s Run Golf Club, Lilydale. We wish Tom every success when this event is rescheduled. VCAL Sausage Sizzle: VCAL students conducted a very successful barbeque last week to raise money for the Red Shield Appeal. The smell of barbequed sausages and onions wafting down the corridor proved to be very enticing. Well done to these students on their management skills in effectively catering for the masses. The students are also collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the Salvation Army. Literature Excursion: I had the pleasure of accompanying the Year 12 Literature students on an excursion to Peterborough last Thursday afternoon. Sunny skies greeted us as students channelled their creative energies into trying to emulate the writing style of their current text and author Tim Winton on the imaginative landscape. Year 12 Indonesian Excursion: Year 12 students enjoyed catching up face-to-face with their classmate from Heywood Secondary College on Friday in Warrnambool. This student joins in classes virtually and appreciated the efforts of students and Mrs French to enable her to have this contact. ADVANCE Guest Speakers: Year 9 Advance students hosted alumni Kellie Kempton and David Mills during their regular session this week. Both long term volunteers, they spoke about their experiences and coveyed: • how it can lead to future job opportunities; • the personal satisfaction that you get from volunteering; • benefits to the community; • importance of sharing the load. Students are in the process of organising community projects as part of this program. Food Technology Excursion: To build their understanding of the Food in Australia outcome, Year 11 Food Technology students participated in a series of workshops in and around Warrnambool this week. The students visited the Worngundidj nursery in Warrnambool and learned about seed collection and propogation of native bush foods. From there they travelled to the Koroit Rail Trail where garden beds have been developed so users of the trail can consume bush foods along the way. The students were to assist in planting out a new garden bed but unfortunately the weather did not allow for the this. The students completed their experience at Tower Hill where they walked around the boardwalk, sampling bush tucker and learning how to find koalas by the smell of their urine! GAT and Year 11 Exams: Students studying a Year 12 subject must sit the GAT (General Achievement Test) which will be held in the AG Daws Hall on Wednesday 9th June from 10am – 1.15pm. An information session on how to approach the GAT will be held prior to the date. Students will pick up the tricks on answering the multiple choice questions and gain an insight into how to respond to the extended pieces. Year 11 exams are scheduled for Monday 7th, Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 10th June. Students have received a copy of their timetable. Senior Netball: Year 9/10 students had an enjoyable day out at the senior interschool netball on Wednesday. Coached by Sports Captain, Holly Swayn, the team won two games. Congratulations to all students involved on displaying excellent sportsmanship and encouraging each other. Our Vision: Camperdown College will be a high performing school that produces graduates well equipped to succeed beyond school and contribute actively to the community.
Year 7 Information Evening: The corridors were abuzz with excitement and pride as we welcomed prospective students and their families to our Year 7 Information Evening. Visitors enjoyed the range of activities that they were able to participate in throughout the evening that were capably led by current Year 7 students and a few extra Year 8 helpers. New parents who wear the double hats of also being past students were amazed at the transformation of the campus. A numbers of attendees were at an all-time high, with many attendees from outside our school community. Our students were fantastic ambassadors for the school and really shone on the night. Thanks to all students who helped out on the evening, especially those in Year 12 who already have two nights out a week at present for deb training. Vicki Angus, Senior Campus Assistant Principal Education Week Celebrations: Junior Campus News We have had a week filled with much excitement and pride with Education Week in full swing at the Junior Campus. Orientated on the theme Building Connections, students grew links with various community groups and individuals building their understandings in an array of fields. Guest speakers from the mining industry and health services, environmental groups exposing students to bug and bird house building, and art activities including Jenga decorating were experiences students participated in throughout the week. Our Junior Campus Open Morning saw many families embrace the opportunity to visit classrooms, observe work and collaborate on learning activities with their family members. Having special visitors through the doors and corridors in significant numbers was a wonderful sight that had been absent for quite some time. Similar positivity and pride were also displayed when our Prep classrooms were opened on Wednesday for prospective kinder students and families. Miss Edwards and Miss Smith embraced the attention and engagement of our kinder visitors through an Educational Week activity, with the evidence hung proudly on our front fence for all of our community to see. Celebrating such a week is only possible with the support and effort from staff and I thank everyone at the Junior Campus for the week we have had. A special mention to Miss Edwards, Miss Smith and Mrs Murphy for their efforts in particular. Walk to School Safely Day: On Friday 14th May, students participated in Walk Safely to School Day. This day aims to promote the importance of regular physical exercise as well as holding an adult’s hand when crossing the road if under the age of 10. Students, and some parents, then enjoyed a light breakfast in the BER as part of our weekly breakfast program on a Friday. Division Cross Country Championships: On Monday, 24th May, six students represented Camperdown College at the Division Cross Country Championships in Warrnambool. Held at Deakin University, these students competed against other talented long distance runners from a variety of schools after qualifying for this level of competition due to their excellent efforts at the District Cross Country Championships in Noorat. Noah Boyd, Nate Castle, Quinn Clark, Philippa Kempton, Abey MacLachlan and Charlie Unwin ran successfully with almost all finishing within the top 20 for their age division. Nate Castle finished 11th overall qualifying him for the next level of competition, Regional Cross Country, which has been postponed due to the circuit breaker lockdown next week. Congratulations on your efforts Nate. Prep 2022 Enrolments: This week saw our kinder to prep transition program begin with an open morning made available for kinder families to attend showcasing our engaging prep program. With the transition program in full swing, enrolments for Prep 2022 are now open. Individual tours are still available for interested families which will complement the extensive transition program planned for this year; capably run by our two Prep teachers Miss Edwards and Miss Smith. Robert Burns Scottish Festival: The Robert Burns Scottish Festival will be held in our community on Friday 2nd – Sunday 4th July (Term 2 holidays). Our school has been long-time supporters of this festival and we are excited that we will once again be involving our students in activities associated with this festival. The generosity of the festival’s committee will be showcased over the remaining four weeks of this term with students participating in Indigenous cultural experiences, including dance and culture, with Brett Clark with an opportunity to present with Brett at the festival and perform learnings from his teachings at school.
