MAINTENANCE PROGRAMS ON TRACK After a year or two of not being where we wanted to be, major maintenance programs in the Public Utility Division are back on track. The main programs for the division, which include sewer maintenance and water valve maintenance, produced great results in 2021. As shown in the graph below, our numbers have rebounded and surpassed goal totals. The goal for each of the programs, which is roughly 100,000 feet of sewer and 1,000 valves, is indicated by the black line. Personnel changes, equipment issues, division priorities, and special projects are just a few of the issues that can pull us away from the important task of regular maintenance. These issues somewhat stabilized in 2021, which allowed us to focus on the task(s) at hand. Sewer maintenance, as shown by the orange bar, registered over 120,000 feet in 2021. This is right around 20% of our system, which is the goal set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for maintaining a healthy sanitary system. This is an important task because we can identify certain areas that need additional cleaning, maintenance, or repairs to the system. Keeping the lines clean equates to fewer backups in our neighborhoods or even homes, which we definitely want to avoid. So, although that large orange truck can be smelly, noisy, and block traffic, realize it is performing important work! Valve maintenance is one of the important tasks in maintaining a water system. Having valves that are not buried underground, operate smoothly, close and open completely, and do not leak are vital. When there are emergencies, new developments or replacement of water mains, we need our valves to be ready to isolate the system. In 2021, the division inspected/maintained/repaired over 1,000 valves in the City, which is just over 1/3 of the valves we have in our water system. The American Water Works Association (AWWA) recommends maintaining your valves every 3-5 years, so the amount completed in 2021 puts us ahead of the curve. Although operating and exercising valves can sometimes cause pressure fluctuations or cloudy water, it is yet another vital operation performed by the Utility Division. When you see our crews out on the side of the road, walking around your property, or lifting manhole covers, realize they have an important job to do. We would rather see our crews on-site preventing emergencies, rather than waiting until an emergency occurs. DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS · PAGE 12
