Term 3, edition 2 2018 Art tour to Cape Town A visual arts tour, over half term, provided a group of art pupils with an amazing oppor- tunity to engage with a variety of works of which they had only ever seen reproductions. Accompanied by Mrs Shan Jacobs and Mrs Sue Thompson, the group visited the newly opened Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art, which is the largest museum in the world dedicated to contemporary African art. They also explored a number of other highly-acclaimed art galleries: the Stern Museum, the National Gallery (with the iconic Butcher Boys by Jane Alexander), La Motte Collection, the Rupert Museum, the Goodman Gallery and the Stevenson Gallery. Other highlights included drawing time at Kirstenbosch Gardens and a trip up Table Mountain. A celebration of dance ExperiDance, an annual dance showcase, was hosted by Epworth at the Hexagon Theatre. It featured the Epworth Junior, Senior and LiveArt dance companies, as well as other dance studios and school dance companies from around the Midlands. 2019 leaders announced Epworth’s 2019 leaders were announced at an emotionally-charged assembly in the last week of term. Ms Laura Bekker thanked the current Grade 12 class and said they had lived up to the school’s expectations. She emphasised the importance and value of each leadership portfolio and encouraged each pupil to view it as an opportunity for self-discovery and growth. In the U18 women’s K1 event, Caitlin placed fourth and Amy came 19th. In the K2 event, Caitlin and her partner, Zara Wood, finished in eighth position and Amy and Cayleigh placed 10 th. SA Schools’ K1 River Championships Epworth managed to fight off other girls’ schools to secure the top podium spots at the South African Schools’ K1 River Championships at Liebenbergvlei in Reitz. Caitlin Mackenzie was crowned the U18 SA river champ, followed by fellow pupil Tracey Oellermann. Caitlin was also third in the women’s competition. In the U16 age group, Shannon Parker-Dennison came second.
