Adult Animation - The Fastest Growing Animation Category with the Most Headroom for Growth WHAT THIS WHITE PAPER COVERS: Adult audiences are increasingly comfortable with a wider array of animation genres Animation for adult audiences is a killer category for the SVODs, and new linear and digital buyers have entered the market There is an unprecedented number of hybrid comedies and "non-comedy genre" animated TV series in the pipeline This new crop of animation should export better internationally than culturally specific animated comedies (the bulk of adult animation to this point) These factors will make adult animation the fastest growing animation category with the most headroom for growth A detailed breakdown of current and upcoming series by genre, studio and buyer Adult Animation White Paper High Concentrate LLC – 2020 3
Scope Of This Report The following document focuses exclusively on adult animated TV series (mostly 11’s and 22’s). These shows are typically written and produced by and for English- speaking markets. This research is limited to shows that are currently airing and shows that are in development or production. It does not cover library material except where noted. This document does not cover animated movies for adults (it’s a very short list) and does not include Japanese anime, which is a burgeoning $10.9 billion global industry in its own right. There are some exceptions to this rule (like the upcoming "Bladerunner: Black Lotus" series) that are cross-over anime/animation projects. This market survey does not attempt to cover any children’s animation which is a considerably larger, crowded and a more mature market. Many series share multiple production partners making it difficult to attribute any one show to any one production company. Where possible, all production partners are indicated in the summaries. The buyers covered in this report are the SVODs, networks, cable, and digital. Introduction - U.S. Audience's Appetite for Adult Animation is Widening and Growing and Buyers and Studios are Responding Today's Adult Audiences Embrace Animation Up until recently, animation for adults basically came in three flavors – irreverent (Adult Swim), family sitcoms (FOX) and Japanese anime. This white paper illustrates how the upcoming line-up of animated TV series for adults is growing and getting considerably more diverse. The shift in appetite for more ambitious programming has been gradual as series like "Rick and Morty" and "BoJack Horseman" have gained popularity. Alex Hirsch, the creator of "Gravity Falls" explains, “Now that animated content has been freed from the need of appealing to everyone, I think we’re going to see a fast evolution that’s been1 long overdue.” The SVODs in particular realize they no longer need to play the lowest common denominator game resulting in an explosion of new adult animation that pushes boundaries. Adult Animation Drives Ratings with 18-34s For the last 10 years in a row, Adult Swim has ranked No. 1 among adults 18-34 years old in basic-cable ratings across the total day. The median age of the Adult Swim viewer is 24 years 2 old, about half that of viewers across all broadcast and cable channels. 2.33 million people tuned in to watch "Rick and Morty" for their 4th season premiere. It won out over all other scripted cable programming on that Sunday night, even beating out The "Walking Dead" for the top spot. Most New SVOD's Have Adult Animation in Their Mix Hulu pivoted quickly and turned to Marvel Animation to produce original series when they started losing licensed series like "South Park" to HBO Max (HBO Max paid Viacom $500M for the exclusive streaming rights.) HBO Max has several series in production including "Aquaman: King of Atlantis," Apple TV is producing "Central Park," an animated musical series, and CBS All Access is in production on "Star Trek: Lower Decks." 1. More Linear Buyers Than Ever Ten years ago, Comedy Central and Adult Swim were arguably the only cable channels that had any appetite for adult animation. That list has grown significantly with the entrance of new cable channels like SYFY with their TZGZ block of sci-fi/comedies. Several cable channels feature at least one or two adult animated comedies in their mix, including FX/FXX with their hit "Archer." Showtime renewed "Our Cartoon President," and is in development on a new series "Multifarious Maris." FOX, the one major network with a long-running, successful animation block on Sunday nights, is still aggressively looking for the next big hit - they've greenlit two new series ("Bless the Harts" and "Duncanville") in the past six months with at least two more series ("The Great North" and "Housebroken") on the horizon. Social and Mobile - Lots of Views, Not Much Biz...Yet New entrants like Katzenberg's Quibi and its smaller upstart competitor Ficto could start to prove new business models around short format animation for adults. If prior experience on the SVODs, cable and social are any indicator, animation for adults will prove to be a successful category on the new mobile platforms like Quibi. Quibi has several animated series in development including "Micro Mayhem", "Trill League and "Your Daily Horosopoe." The question will be whether the model works with consumers. Companies like Mondo Media and Frederator have generated billions of views on YouTube. But YouTube, in trying to clean up their act for advertisers, has strangled most of the means of monetizing adult content on their platform. YouTube algorithms tend to suppress adult animation because it often pushes boundaries. This may change as YouTube is showing signs that it is rethinking its position forbidding partners from monetizing their own content. Adult Animation White Paper High Concentrate LLC – 2020 7
Key Adult Animation Insights from 1 Around the Industry Michael Thorn, President, FOX “Animation is a key part of our business; we are really looking to growing our slate and potentially even adding another hour of animation on our schedule in a targeted section of the year.” 1 Billy Wee, SVP, Original Animation “Streaming is a more wide-open landscape than linear, but the challenge is fundamentally the same: to work with inventive, inspired creators and help them realize the very best version of their creative 2 vision.” Mine Moon, SVP, Original Animation “As there are more and more opportunities for animators, we are going to see a variety in animated content like never before. We want to create great, supportive environments for our creators to come and do their best work — when that happens, the sky’s the limit on what is possible for the art form." 3 Chris McCumber, Syfy “As we are looking at the network, not only do we want to have people come in for our original programming, we want them to come for a lot of the fan-focused, alternative stuff. The TZGZ animated pieces are part of that because we know there is a very very loyal fan base when it comes to 4 adult animation.” 1. 4. Challenges Ahead 1. Talent Shortage May Inhibit Growth This is a general challenge facing all the animation studios. As the streaming wars intensify, production companies are snapping up office space in and around L.A. to cope with the growing demand for content. This trend has surged in the last five to seven years according to Drew Planting, founder and managing partner at GPI Cos. (the property developer leasing out Titmouse’s new studio). Netflix is taking a multifaceted approach by creating their own studio in LA, locking up the output from Titmouse and ordering from third party producers and studios like "Castlevania" from Frederator/Powerhouse. Others are locking up talent – for example, NBCUniversal (Peacock) has a first look deal with Seth MacFarlane. 2. Where Will Consumers Find Their Favorite Animated Series? 37 23 22 10 5 2 0$ $1 - $20 $21 - $40 $41 - $60 $61 - $70 $71 or more YouGov 2019 Research has shown that consumers only have a willingness to pay for 3 subscription services and young adults have even less disposable income. Subscription services historically do little promotion for their shows and an avalanche of new content is about to land on the new SVOD platforms. This makes it hard to surface new shows. Netflix’s library of licensed content is shrinking as rival old-guard media companies withdraw their shows in preparation for their own SVOD services. All Disney films and series, for instance, are being pulled ahead of the launch of Disney+. Licensed works - and not Netflix originals - currently get the lion’s share of views on Netflix; as the licensed works start to migrate elsewhere, original content will pick up the slack. Will there be a one-stop platform for adult animation, or will the platforms specialize – irreverent animated comedy and anime on HBOMax, animated genre series on Netflix, Hulu for animated super hero series, etc.? Adult Animation White Paper – 2020 High Concentrate, LLC 14
3. The International Market for Adult Animation is Immature The international market for adult animation is immature. English-speaking markets will take US comedy/animation but most non-English foreign markets are still relatively uninterested in American adult animated comedy, with the exception of the tentpole network comedies like Fox’s The Simpsons , which do export well internationally. 4. Major SVODs are Locking Up Worldwide Rights to Content Major SVODs are locking up worldwide rights on all platforms in perpetuity with a cost plus 20- 30% profit for studios, leaving little to no upside for producers beyond subsequent season order bumps. They’re also pulling back their library rights from other platforms and channels, making it harder to find licensed animation. It will be challenging for small to medium size studios to retain ownership and preserve an upside from selling their content to the rest of the world. 5. Majors are Locking Up the Best Creators and Studios Titmouse signed a first-look with Netflix, Bento Box was acquired by Fox Entertainment. Rooster Teeth (RWBY) was acquired by Otter (WarnerMedia). Brutus Pink, the talent behind "Bigmouth" was just signed to a three-year deal. Consolidation and talent deals with the best studios will continue with the new SVOD platforms. But, it will also shut out some buyers who relied on third party studios and licensed content for their respective channels and platforms forcing them to look for new suppliers. 6. Adult Animation is Not as Merchandisable as Kids Merchandise is an important revenue stream for the kids' animation business. The really big adult animated franchises like "The Simpsons" and "Rick and Morty" have merchandise programs but generally speaking most adult animated series will have limited merchandise. 7. Young Adult Ratings are Declining on Cable The cable channels are experiencing a gradual erosion in viewership, especially amongst the young adult demographic, as this audience increasingly turns to YouTube, Netflix and playing videogames in their leisure time. Longer term, this could force cable channels like Adult Swim to move their content onto HBOMax. Adult Animation White Paper – 2020 High Concentrate, LLC 15
Kids vs. Adult Animation Studios Kids Animation Studios Often Not Well Suited to Adult Animation Adult Animation Kids Animation Studio's brands are often more rebellious, adult Must establish or maintain family friendly brand Mostly writer-driven Poperty/franchise-driven Writers from live-action TV, comedians, etc. Writers often not as well known Considerably smaller market size Much larger overall market Today it is mostly a US phenomenon, some uptake in Global English speaking markets More inclined towards pre-existing IP (legacy IP, More acceptance for quirky new IP books, comics, etc.) Market broken into at least 3 sectors – pre-school, 6- Singular Market for 18-34s 10, and 11+ Primarily 2D or stop-motion Some 2D but much more 3D Crowded mature market dominated by big studios Very few studios servicing the industry and brands although new subscription services shaking up the marketplace Unique voice and POV are critical. Show runners tend to be writers/writer teams or multi-talented creators Underlying IP, design, look, etc. plays a bigger role (Seth MacFarlane) Often driven by toys. Opportunities for most Some merchandise around some properties properties No restrictions on advertising – able to gather names, Must be COPPA compliant, no ability to have direct run advertising relationship with the audience Adult Animation White Paper – 2020 High Concentrate, LLC 16
Mitigating Factors and Solutions 1. Source and Produce Shows Outside Los Angeles Adult animation tends to be writer-driven and therefore much of it is produced in LA. Shows could still be written in LA but there’s a lot of writing and production talent elsewhere in the US, Canada, France, the UK etc. 2. Produce Non-Comedy Genre Series Produce non-comedy genre series like horror, drama, superhero, etc. These will be differentiated from comedy and export better internationally. It’s more of a greenfield opportunity and therefore less cluttered and competitive. Dubbing animation generally is less noticeable than live action and good non-comedy genre series should export well. 3. Gaming Will Be Important Ancillary Opportunity Gaming will be important ancillary business around adult genre animation The largest franchises - The Simpsons, Rick and Morty, etc. support merchandise programs, but animation for adults does not lend itself as well to plush toys and baby jumpers. But animated genre series lend themselves to gaming – Walking Dead is a good example. Castlevania is based on a game franchise. 4. Not all Buyers Have Their Own Studios or Output Deals The shifting landscape with the entry of the new SVODs and the consolidation will force some of the buyers to look for new partners to feed them with content. France has an appreciation for anime and is producing some exciting adult animation like "I Lost My Body", and "LastMan." Canada, with its generous tax credits on labor, is also well- positioned to originate and produce adult animation. The cable networks will do U.S. only license deals, making it possible to retain ownership and maximize producer’s upside from international sales.
