GOING FAR, GOING TOGETHER,

THE CENTRE FOR THOUGHTFUL LEADERSHIP

We had a history of achievements in the Uniformed Groups,
Student Council, Sports and CCA Leaders which was pivotal in
the shift of the Swiss vision in 2012 - from “Vibrant Learning To effect the CYL function well, we developed the distinctive
Community” to “Thoughtful Leaders”. The vision of giving every Thoughtful Leadership Programme (TLP). The TLP is also the
student a chance to lead – to bring about meaningful and Learning for Life (LLP) curriculum that propels the Thoughtful
sustainable change in their environment set the new and inspiring Leadership focus. It is one of the two Distinctive Programmes
direction for us. We became one of the six Community Youth (the second being the Applied Learning Programme Scientific
Leadership (CYL) schools in Singapore in 2014. Research Skills) of the school.

Thoughtful Leadership Committee formed in 2013.

The TLP is driven by the Centre for Thoughtful Leadership (CTL) that would culminate in the hands-on VIA efforts of the
which oversees three sub-programmes, namely (i) the Glocal students. At the same time, 2014 was the inaugural year when
Perspectives Programme (GPP), (ii) the Values-in Action the youngest of the three programmes, GPP was piloted
Programme (VIAP) and (iii) the Student Leadership Programme among the Secondary 1 Express classes.

       THE GLOCAL PERSPECTIVES PROGRAMME

The GPP is a school-based curriculum designed to inspire our students’ thought, concern and action for the community by
making constant links to the world they live in. The GPP is a weekly one-hour formal lesson that is designed for two years. At
the end of the two years, we expect our students to be able to:

       • discuss local and world issues with confidence
       • articulate a well-considered position on an issue
       • actively initiate suggestions for possible social action and change and
       • experience knowledge amalgamation using authentic materials and contexts through the use of communication and
collaboration skills as well as through independent learning and knowledge application.

       The EFG Thinking Framework

With a deliberate emphasis placed on developing leaders who are grounded in values, the GPP team developed a Thinking
Framework with three dimensions of thought – (i) to think ethically, to think in a forward-looking and positive manner and to think
with the global/local (Glocal) contexts - so that when they create change, it is humane, sustainable and meaningful. The
framework further delineates the specific habits of thinking under each dimension of thought.

For example Ethical Thinking is displayed through moral reasoning and perspective-taking in the light of a dilemma or conflict of
priorities. Likewise, Forward and Positive Thinking are effected through problem-solving and positive-self-talk in the face of
challenges. Glocal thinking is demonstrated through critical thinking and an awareness of cross-cultural skills.

Thematic Overview: Building An Inclusive Society

Selected skill-sets anchor each module taught and assessed
every term. The topics were selected to support the VIA level
outcomes and to infuse a sense of empathy for their
environment and the people in the community. This approach
was targetted at helping students in their roles as Thoughtful
Leaders who want to build an inclusive society. (Refer to the
following picture on the topics planned for the two years.

An Overview of the Two Years of Learning and Assessment

Developing an Informed Response On Topics Through Perspective-Shifting

Students were exposed to perspectives on a given topic that are explored through phases: from the activation of their (i) fa miliar and
personal schema, then (ii) the familiar but less personal local views and and finally (iii) the less familiar and less personal global stand-
points – before arriving at an informed and locally rooted personal perspective. This approach of shifting perspectives was anchored
through a variety of pedagogical approaches – research, role-play, debates, discussions and inquiry-based projects.

The six core skills of the EFG (Ethical, Forward/Positive and

Stages of Implementation in 2014-2016
The GPP was implemented in 2014 to Secondary 1 Express
students as a pilot programme. Selected lessons were trialed
among students from the Secondary 1 Normal Academic and
Normal Technical streams. By 2015, all Secondary 1 and 2
classes were introduced to GPP.

       Student Leadership Programme
The Swiss Student Leadership Programme has a 2-tier structure comprising cohort programme as well as select programme.
For the cohort programme, the school developed a student leadership curriculum based on our PEMT framework (Principled,
Efficacious leaders with Managerial competencies and a Transformational mindset) which focuses on explicit leadership
competencies at the different cohort levels to allow students to develop into a Thoughtful Leader. The student leadership
curriculum has a spiral progression across the 4 years.

self-management competencies to help them manage with
the increased workload from primary school and settle down
       in secondary school.

In Secondary 2, peer leadership competencies such as
communication and facilitation skills are taught, where students
are given direct platforms for application such as their Integrated

Eldercare Project
As part of our vision to mould students to be Thoughtful
Leaders, the Student Council continued their journey of the
Diff-ability Project this year and extended it to advocate for the
elderly. Looking at the community in Bukit Gombak, there was
an increasing need to reach out to the elderly as there was an
increasing number of elderly living around the vicinity.

The increasing need to build an inclusive society has propelled
the Student Council to embark on this simulation project, the
‘Eldercare Experience’ to help Swiss students explore more real
life issues that are happening around them. This project aims to
help students be able to have a better understanding of the
concerns and problems the elderly face in their daily lives. We
hope that such programs will sensitise our students and spur
them to make a positive change in the community.

                                                                     Primary School Outreach Project

THE VALUES-ACTION-PROGRAMME

The Swiss VIAP is one of the key levers to develop student character, leadership and spirit for volunteering. With a two-tiered
whole-school approach to deliver the programme, all Swiss students experience VIA through diversified cohort programmes and
student-directed VIA activities.

“Awareness-Action-Advocacy” (3A) provides the framing for our VIA curriculum and programme to accentuate the importance of youth
volunteerism through student-directed VIA. Our students, as thoughtful leaders, will step forward to advocate for the good cause they
believe and lead others to achieve position and sustainable change for the community. Our VIAP is crafted in three tiers:

Tier One: Cohort VIA programmes

The cohort VIA programmes centralised on specific theme:

Secondary One: Environmental Awareness
Secondary Two: Junior Care
Secondary Three: Elder Care

For the secondary One cohort, to develop the sense of care and
belief in self to make a difference and contribute to the community,
a recycling project was embarked to collect items like newspaper
and clothes. All proceeds garnered from the recycled items were
donated to the Society for Physically Disabled.
Tier 2: Co-curricular Activity based VIA programmes

are tasked to explore their choice of social cause and partners

example, class of 4E3 2016 chose Muscular Dystrophy
Association of Singapore (MDAS). The class went on a visit to
understand the needs of the patients of muscular dystrophy. With
the insights and knowledge gained, they shared with the school to
create greater awareness of the challenges and resilience
demonstrated by the patients. The class went on to organise a
fund raising in school to sell handicrafts made by the patients and
even rally volunteers to participate in MDAS’s flag day.

W2 Cluster Art
Student artists from five secondary schools, Swiss Cottage
Secondary, Hillgrove Secondary, Yusof Ishak Secondary,
Kranji Secondary and Jurongville Secondary, came together
for this mega-installation artwork called ‘A Journey in Space’.

The theme of Space has been symbolically used throughout to relate
to the image of space in universe parallel to our environment. At the
same time, the theme focused on spatial concept. Students were
channelled into their own inner artists as they made marks onto
sphere by experimenting with given materials. They would then
contribute their spheres to a mega-installation artwork with the same
given theme of space, led by Ng Yang Ce; Singapore’s
multidisciplinary artist who makes sculpture, drawings and
installations. The mega artwork installation was conceptualised to
bring all the spheres together through the sub theme of embracing
unity in diversity. The idea was to let students reflect on their
differences through the spheres and at the same time, give them the
notion of connectedness.

As part of the Chinese New Year celebration, a classroom decoration competition
was held among the classes. Using couplets and Ang Baos to decorate their
classrooms in relation to Monkey, which is the Zodiac sign of this year, the festive

       & Racial Harmony Day
The theme for this year allowed us to explore our country’s cultural heritage. While
recognising the varied nature of the cultural heritage from the different ethnic
groups, we also acknowledge the commonalities among these cultural heritages
and the role that they play to unify Singapore as one.

Our students were exposed to several cultural heritages such as our traditional
cuisines and the use of Singlish which helps to bring Singaporeans together from all
walks of life. Food vendors selling a wide variety of cuisines ranging from satay, ice-
kacang and teh tarik were called in to educate our students on the rich heritage of
these cuisines. The lower secondary classes also had the opportunity to try their
hand at playing various traditional games such as the top, five stones and chapteh.
Teachers and students alike had a fun time playing these games together while
learning about the heritage of these games.

It was a fun and memorable day as the school came together to commemorate
Racial Harmony Day. The sight of our students in various ethnic costumes and the
smell of the piping hot satay will remain etched in our mind for some time to come.
