Indigenous Initiative William & Sandra Dumas T he Indigenous Initiative continues to connect with churches across the NSW & ACT by providing resources, advice, and encouragement to help promote cultural safety and awareness practic- es. In particular, we have designed and developed inclusive and interactive training and work- shop packages with a Biblical Perspective. A major annual highlight for us is ACC National Indigenous Conference. In 2019 it was called “Garulbu” which means “Together”. The conference had around 300 people in attendance, with amazingly 25 Indigenous leaders travelling all the way from Wyndham in Western Australia. churches represented across the state we saw over 5,000 young people come to be a part of the event. 593 salvations took place across the 9 locations in Ballina, Coffs Harbour, Armidale, Newcastle, Central Coast, Sydney (we combined the previous 5 UWS events across the Sydney region into one huge sold out event to maximise and expand the vision of UWS), Canberra, The Riverina, and the South Coast. This year, the 2020 UWS will be an online event. We are excited to launch what could be the largest single gathering of young people in Youth Alive history. Youth Alive Retreat This is always a highlight for us. For the past two years we Youth have seen over 250 Youth Pastors and leaders fill the room for the purpose of encountering God in a way that sets the course for the year ahead. We truly believe that God used the YA Retreat to prepare the young leaders of our state for the unprecedented season that came to be. Alive The Tour The Tour encompasses our ‘resource’ element of the Youth Alive vision to Reach, Raise and Resource. On ‘The Tour’, over 200 youth leaders and youth pastors across the state are able to lean in…ask questions…gain insight…connect and network with some of the most influential Youth Alive leaders. In 2019 we held a Tour event in 4 loca- tions, Coffs Harbour, Newcastle, Sydney & Canberra. This year, we were Stephen Lott able to expand our Tour event to include Newcastle, Central Coast, Sydney, South Coast & Canberra. We are humbled to be a part of what God in His Church and in young people all over NSW W and the ACT. It’s incredibly exciting to have them. new faces on our team, as well as being able to cheer on those who are continuing their ministry journey, just in a new season. Since our last bi-annual report we have redesigned the structure of how leadership in Youth Alive is outworked across NSW and the ACT. It is now split into four super regions: North, Central, Sydney and South. Each Super Regional Leader is responsible for the care, outworking of roles and com- munication with their regional leaders within that super region. Since 2018, Youth Alive has been able to release the pressure of having to raise money from events due to new sponsors and the success- ful operation of the Youth Alive Academy (2020 saw the start of the Sydney Academy, which was a great addition to our Hunter Academy which has been such a success). We have established a plan that allows 25% of Youth Alive’s profits made from regional events to be assigned back into the region in which the event was held. This provides Regional Leaders with financial support to network with local youth pastors and youth ministries as well as give them the opportunity to run their own events. Events we ran this past 2 years were: United We Stand The 2019 UWS was the biggest and best we have ever seen. With over 400 volunteers actively involved and up to 200 15 16

Community Engagement Andrew Harper F or me, this season has been very busy and challenging…but at the same time very rewarding. More than ever “The Church” has had itself tested in this year of droughts, bushfires, and Covid-19, with the simple message from their communities being “don’t just tell us you care…show us!”. Our ability as a movement and churches to respond to this season I believe has bought new meaning to ‘Community Engagement’ for us all. I am proud of our response as a movement with churches from Merim- bula…to the far west…to the North Coast. • We have been working hand in hand with Chaplaincy Australia and ACCI to respond to needs in affected communities. • Our amazing chaplains have shone, they are quite often the first responders in a tragedy. • We have been ‘on the ground’ to respond practically and emo- tionally to support people, especially in the wake of the devas- tating bushfires. The increased desire for community engage- ment saw our churches simply ask how they could help their communities…the result being they were asked to rebuild sheds burnt in the bushfires, make meals for exhausted front- line medical staff, and deliver hampers to vulnerable people. This year we have seen the introduction of the concept of “Cinnamon”. This has now given a way for all our ACC churches to get access to proven programs which are easily replicate able…why reinvent the wheel? When you engage your community with acts of kindness, year after year, with no strings attached…you earn the right to answer the question “why”. Personally, just recently, I had the amazing privilege of seeing 22 clients from the Bay City Care Community Food Care Program respond to an invitation to attend an Alpha course…so good! I would love to help your church engage more in your community…please don’t hesitate to contact me to see how. I strongly believe that community engagement has found its place as the ongoing ‘support strat- egy’ of our movement. 19 20

SPECIAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The financial position of the ACC NSW & ACT in the 2018/19 period could best be described as a tale of two (SCRIPTURE IN SCHOOLS) years! 2018 showed a robust surplus due to a strong income and some trimming of our expenses, before 2019 produced a significant loss of income resulting from one of our leading long-term churches, Hillsong Barbara Scott Church, needing to reposition within our movement.
