Research activity During the Bachelor and Master thesis periods in the labs of Prof. Lanzetta and Dr. De Castro, the focus of my research project was the chemical characterization of glycolipidic Gram-negative bacteria endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides or LPS), directly purified from different bacteria. To this purpose, I developed good knowledge in both purification methods and spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques (NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry) for the structural analysis of biomacromolecules. Then, I moved to the University of Milano - Bicocca for a PhD in Chemical Sciences under the supervision of Prof. Francesco Peri. The topic of my PhD thesis was the design, synthesis, structural and biological characterization of bio-active small molecules. These compounds were tested for their activity on LPS binding proteins. The work was supported by NMR interaction studies between synthetic ligands and purified receptors that I deepened during my research period abroad in Madrid, in Prof. J. Jimenez-Barbero’s group. Now I am a Post-Doc fellow, under the supervision of Dr. Cristina Airoldi. My current scientific interest concerns the application of NMR spectroscopy to both metabolomics and molecular recognition studies. In particular, my research projects are focused on the identification of metabolic markers of pathologies from biofluids and on the study of the metabolic profile of food matrices, but also on the NMR characterization of biologically relevant molecular interactions and recognition processes. Research experience abroad Oct – Dec 2012 C.O.S.T.
