ABC for medical applications AI, Big Data and Cloud EU perspective Sasa Jenko, PhD European Commission DG Research & Innovation and DG SANTE
ABC for medical applications: AI, Big Data and Cloud • European open • science cloud Big data • Digitalising health • European Commission Cloud Strategy • and care Artificial intelligence for Europe
ABC for medical applications: AI, Big Data and Cloud Coordinated Plan on the Development and Use of ‘’AI Made in Europe’’ • National AI strategies: By mid-2019 all Member States should have their own strategies in place outlining investment levels and implementation measures, which will feed into discussions at EU-level • A new European AI public-private partnership: A new research and innovation partnership on AI will be set up, to foster collaboration between academia and industry in Europe and to define a common strategic research agenda on AI • A new AI scale-up fund: The Commission will support startups and innovators in AI and blockchain in their early stages as well as for companies in their scale-up phase • Developing and connecting world-leading centres for AI: European AI excellence centres will be developed and connected, world-reference testing facilities will be established in areas such as connected mobility, and the uptake of AI across the economy will be encouraged through Digital Innovation Hubs (€66 million for robotics hubs are announced today). A European Innovation Council pilot initiative will also be launched to support next generation AI technologies High Level Group of Experts European AI Alliance https://ec.europa.eu/futurium/en/ai-alliance-consultation/membership
ABC for medical applications: AI, Big Data and Cloud What is artificial intelligence? Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to systems that display intelligent behaviour by analysing their environment and taking actions – with some degree of autonomy – to achieve specific goals. From Communication from the Commission to the European Parliament, the European Council, the Council, the European Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions on Artificial Intelligence for Europe
ABC for medical applications: AI, Big Data and Cloud Simple example: StethoMe: faster diagnostics within arm’s reach • wireless intelligent stethoscope StethoMe • smart device uses artificial intelligence algorithms to monitor a patient’s breathing sounds, allowing parents to examine their child and send the data to a doctor – without leaving the house StethoMe, a start-up from Poznan, Polan
AI in health and care - examples http://www.htx-h2020.eu/ Patient-centred, societally oriented, real-time decision-making on access to reimbursement for health technologies throughout Europe prediction models and AI/machine learning methods are used to forecast treatment effects in groups of patients that receive combination therapies, individualised treatments Coordinator: Wim Goettsch, University of Utr
ABC for medical applications: AI, Big Data and Cloud What is Big Data? Big data in health encompasses high volume, high diversity biological, clinical, environmental, and lifestyle information collected https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27338147 from single individuals to large cohorts, in relation to their health and wellness status, at one or several time points. Big Data in Health refers to large routinely or automatically collected datasets, which are electronically captured and stored. It is reusable in the sense of multipurpose data and comprises the fusion and connection of existing databases for the purpose of improving health and health system performance. It does not refer to data collected for a specific study. https://ec.europa.eu/health/sites/health/files/ehealth/docs/bigdata_report_en.pdf
Big Data example: Big Data for Better Outcomes is a comprehensive European research programme funded by the Innovative Medicines Initiative 2 Joint Undertaking (IMI2) aiming to develop key enablers to support healthcare system transformation through the use of big data. European Health Data and Evidence Network will build a large scale federated network of data sources and harmonize 100 million anonymized health records https://bd4bo.eu/i
ABC for medical applications: AI, Big Data and Cloud • What is European open science cloud? A catalogue of European research data funded with public money A catalogue of services to re-use these data Tools to make their own data open and FAIR Advanced tools to merge and analyse the data in a secure environment A simple access gateway to these services (EOSC Portal) Communities at work (EOSC ‘Coalition of Doers’) Prototype EOSC Portal Turning FAIR into Reality: Report and Action Plan: https://doi.org/10.2777/1524 Prompting an EOSC in practice: https://ec.europa.eu/info/events/2nd-eosc-summit-2018-jun-11_en

EOSC thematic cloud: Health research and innovation Cloud RTD-BIG-DATA@ec.europa
EOSC thematic cloud: Health research and innovation Cloud Interoperability, standards where necessary: community driven HRIC ethics/legal/security issues = gatekeeper Health Research and Innovation Cloud SaaS: software as a service PaaS: platform as a service FAIR data • Health Care? • Health Research Public trust Local/ national Local/ national clouds clouds Some requirements: Needs: Data resides locally strategic agenda built on close interaction between Federation of local databases/clouds community & policy licenses for data use code of conduct, guidance on interpretation for lessons learned from different health implementation of GDPR in health research/care communities better dialogue between researchers, clinicians, lawyers, bioinformaticians and ethicists skills: researchers trained in ethics/data , DPO RTD-BIG-DATA@ec.europa
Cloud example: EUROPOND: European Progression of Neurological Disease Initiative • data from neurological patients to improve treatment and develop predictive models of disease progression • Case studies: Dementia, understanding healthy ageing process, neurodevelopment, multiple sclerosis, prion diseases • two software-based tools for computer-assisted evaluation of patients • computational modelling tools in cloud-based image-analysis systems that supply radiological assessments to clinicians Coordinators: Daniel Alexander, Neil Oxtoby, University
Cloud example: CINECA: Common Infrastructure for National Cohorts in Europe, Canada, and Africa - transcontinental cloud-based human data exchange - access to human big data to accelerate research and improve patient care Coordinator: Thomas Kaene, EMBL
