6 Wednesday, December 5, 2018 The queens of pop There’s no room for the beige and boring in this lively Mt Pleasant home, writes Sue Allison. W hen you’re told to look out for the pink and yellow letterbox and mako shark hanging in the trees, you know this house is going to be a bit different. And Leigh Barrett and Nadia Marinelli’s Mt Pleasant house doesn’t disappoint. The door opens to reveal an eye-spinning interior that exhibits a flagrant disregard for convention and a passion for colour. In the far corner, the scene is set for yuletide with a Christmas tree clad in faux snow and decked with fake fruit and foam doughnuts. Perched atop is a hot-pink flamingo, co-ordinating perfectly with its flamboyant surroundings. ‘‘I like to be amused,’’ says Leigh. Salvatore the pug relaxes in a sunny corner. PHOTOS: JULIET NICHOLAS As devotees of pop art culture and fans of free spirits such as drag queen RuPaul and musician David Bowie, the couple have thrown a good smattering of irreverence and social satire into their rainbow interior. A Butcher Billy Bowie poster declares ‘‘I’m Afraid of Americans’’ while a grim bulldog suggests ‘‘In Dog We Trust’’. Plastic animals trek along the frame of a moustachioed Tretchikoff beauty, and a beatific Jesus sits in a circle of flashing lights above the kitchen sink. ‘‘We don’t stick to the rules around here,’’ says Nadia, who describes their style as ‘‘pure maximalism’’. The two-bedroom 1950s house they share with their 8-year-old son, Hero, and an elderly pug, Salvatore, was designed by Paul Pascoe, one of the country’s pioneers of modernist architecture. ‘‘We love that mid-century era,’’ says Leigh. ‘‘We’ve taken out a couple of internal walls, but otherwise it’s authentic.’’ The single-storey wooden abode was one of the few houses in the hillside enclave to escape with minimal damage in the earthquakes. When they bought the house in 2007, it had textured beige wallpaper, beige curtains and beige carpet covering the rimu floorboards. For Leigh and Nadia, that translated as a blank slate on which to have some fun. The couple do their own renovating and Leigh is accountable for most of the interior decorating. ‘‘Tape is one of my favourite mediums,’’ she says. She calls her technique ‘‘free-styling’’ and applies it to myriad surfaces, from the walls, floor and ceiling to the car. Even a previously ‘‘ugly, cream and discoloured’’ heat pump has been given a fluoro facelift and its sensor covered with a TURN TO PAGE 8 The pink and blue master bedroom is dominated by a vinyl portrait of a sultry woman by Joseph Lynch.

Wednesday, December 5, 2018 13 Time stops for no woman Ageing is a fact of life, but can it not be done less visibly? A nother year has passed and insolently embedded the year’s events on my face. It would appear I no longer look 30 or even 40 or 50 for that matter. Eventually even denial runs out. I know this because earlier this year I gave the nice lady taking admission fees at a motoring Sue exhibition the exact money and she handed me Bramwell Humour back change telling me kindly that pensioners got a discount. My son almost killed himself laughing; me, not so much. A month later I was whizzing along the open road with Aretha Franklin belting out of my CD player when I heard the enchanting tinkle of a siren and saw blue flashing lights in my rear vision mirror. I pulled over to let it pass, at which point it pulled in behind me. Apparently Aretha and I had overdone it and were being a little free with the accelerator. I promptly admitted I was an idiot and apologised and got off with a warning because ‘‘woman of your age aren’t our usual target demographic.’’ It’s an odd sensation being both happy and deflated at the same time.
