GENERAL INFORMATION CALL FOR ENTRIES This call for entries contains all relevant information general rules and procedures for the Royalty Soapie Awards. The 5th Royalty Soapie Awards entries submissions open on the 29th of June 2021 and close on the 29th of July 2021. Direct communication on the nominations process will be sent to all members of the South African television industry, production houses as well as the public. Announcements through the official Royalty Soapie Awards website and social media publishing will also be made. WHAT ARE THE ROYALTY SOAPIE AWARDS? Attracting over 25-million viewers daily, soap operas and telenovelas have the power to influence society through entertainment. These programs are a part of our everyday lives, it’s part of our lifestyles. Referred to within the industry as daily TV dramas, they have succeeded in providing entertainment that is educational with public service messages and melodrama that enthrals millions of viewers from around the country daily. The Awards shape and grow the industry, fostering star quality and recognising the achievement of role players such as, actors, scriptwriters, directors, technical directors, and creative directors. The Royalty Soapie Awards believe that the power of entertainment influences society to develop a greater tomorrow. The RSA’s aims to nurture and grow talent by creating a standard of excellence for the industry. Through the years, the Royalty Soapie Awards have become renowned as the premier event dedicated to honouring and recognising achievement in daily TV drama entertainment programs broadcast across South African channels between the hours of 6:30pm and 9:00pm by presenting awards of merit in various categories. The presentation of these awards is intended to be an incentive for the continued pursuit of excellence and keeping the arts and film industry in South Africa alive. WHAT’S NEW? COVID-19 RESPONSE The Royalty Soapie Awards (RSA) continues to monitor policy and procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic. The safety and well-being of our staff, production partners, stakeholders, entrants, nominees, and special guests, is our top priority. We are collaborating with government and local agencies to implement best practices aimed at managing the spread of the complex virus. RSA has put in place preventative measures to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus, at the awards ceremony. Further communication and terms will be communicated on the awards ceremony registration form. DEFINITIONS DAILY TV DRAMA: A daily TV drama, typically performed as a serial on daytime television, is characterised by characters and situations, sentimentality, and melodrama. It is a series of experiences characterised by dramatic displays of emotion. SOAP OPERA: A television daily TV drama program dealing typically with daily events in the lives of the same group of characters where storylines intertwine and are told during indefinite, continuing runs. A soap opera has no definite end date, it evolves over time and new characters can be introduced and old characters are written out, sometimes returning years later to continue their storyline and branch into new ones. TELENOVELA: A television drama program characterised by a continuing melodramatic story line and a permanent cast. Telenovelas tells one self-contained story, typically within the span of 10 and 11 months, they are written with a definite start and end part. GENERAL RULES ELIGIBILITY PERIOD Nominations are to be submitted in accordance with these published rules. All recordings submitted for the 5th Royalty Soapie Awards must have been produced and publicly exhibited or broadcast in South Africa during the period 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021 (“the entry broadcast period”). ENTRIES 1. Nominations made before the deadline may be modified by the entrant until 10:00 am on the 30th of July 2021. An example of the modification would be the replacement of the episode submitted for judging with another eligible episode. 2. Non-South African talent and crew featured in or participating in the production of an eligible entry will not be eligible for awards; and a. Only South African television productions and broadcasters will be considered for entry. b. RSA reserves the right to request proof that all actors, producers, and directors qualify, as set out herein. 3. Programs and individuals previously entered in any other national competition are eligible. 4. If an entry is made in the wrong category and the error is not discovered until it goes to the voters on the nomination ballot, it will be disqualified. If the RSA makes an error that leads to an incorrect categorisation on the nomination ballot, a correction will be issued. 5. Non-compliant entries will be disqualified at any stage of the competition. 6. Unless otherwise stated, awards are presented for daily TV drama programs (soap opera/telenovela) broadcasts. An episode is defined as a televised production screened on South African television. Only South African daily TV drama programs (soap operas and/or telenovelas) will be considered for entry. 7. Nominations in categories that receive less than three entries are not eligible for an award but may receive a certificate. ELIGIBILITY FOR ENTRIES 1. Programs must be entered for consideration by the producers or production companies, distributors, or broadcasters or (authorised representatives) who are the owners of the copyright to the entered program. a. An authorised representative is defined as a person appointed by the eligible copyright owner to make a submission on their behalf. 2. Individuals may NOT enter themselves. Only authorised representatives, agents, managers, studios, production companies or broadcast entities can facilitate an entry by completing an entry form on behalf of an individual. The listed entrant will then be considered as the eligible entrant. 3. Only the producer and/or line producer can confirm and sign off an entry. 4. Producers, production companies or broadcasters may enter their programs for nominations in all categories but may not enter a performer in more than one performer category i.e.: Outstanding Lead Actor/Actress and Outstanding Male/Female Villain and Outstanding Supporting Actor/Actress. With exceptions to the Outstanding Newcomer and Outstanding Couple, who may be entered into one other performer category i.e.: Outstanding Lead Actor/Actress and Outstanding Male/Female Villain and Outstanding Supporting Actor/Actress. 4
5. Producers may submit one or more program entries per category. In the case where a producer makes an entry for an eligible individual or team, it is the producer’s responsibility to inform that individual/team that they have been nominated by the respective production company or broadcast house for the 5th Royalty Soapie Awards. VETTING All nominations received by the entries closing date are vetted for compliance with the rules of the awards. The purpose of this process, known as vetting, is to ensure that each nomination is eligible and not at risk of disqualification. The administration committee of the RSA performs this function. Nominations submitted into incorrect categories are recommended for placement in the appropriate or more appropriate categories during vetting, in consultation with the nominating company. Nominations that do not comply with the submission requirements will be disqualified. JUDGING A panel of judges made up of South African film, television and production industry producers, directors, actors, designers, academics as well as media commentators from relevant industries adjudicate all the categories in the Awards, apart from the Viewer’s Choice - public vote categories, the Lifetime Achievement award, and the RSA recognition awards – Background Actor and Social Cohesion. The panel of judges is reviewed annually, and they are selected for their expertise in their respective fields. All qualifying entries are forwarded to the judges who adjudicate according to defined guidelines, applying the assessment criteria for each category, their expert knowledge of actors, TV programming, the market, and the general appeal of the product. In the interest of uniformity, judges are required to return results on the online “prescribed judging forms”. Results are then collated into auditable sets. The results are calculated on which the list of nominees is based in accordance with the general rules. Any decisions made by the RSA judging panel and board shall be final and binding and no correspondence will be entered. The judging process will begin on the 2nd of August 2021 and shall be completed by the 16th of August 2021. Nominees are announced to the public, media, and industry members. Finally, the winners are awarded at the Awards Ceremony recording and the show is later broadcast on SABC 1. CONFLICTS OF INTEREST Judges are required to disclose all programming they are currently working on or have worked on within the past two (2) years. Judges are not permitted to judge categories featuring their own work. If a judge is placed on a panel in which they have a conflict of interest, the onus is on the judge to alert the RSA organisers. PRIZES 1. Statuettes are awarded to all specified winners. Actors, producers, or directors whoare nominated in any category are expected to attend the awards ceremony recording. 2. Should the application be successful, then the nominee may be required to record an audio-visual interview for each category entered for broadcast purposes, a copy of which must be emailed to entries@royaltysa.com by no later than the 8th of September 2021, should the nominee not be able to attend the awards ceremony production. 3. The statuette will be given to the winning individual(s), producers, directors and/or teams. 4. The statuette may be given to the winner on the night of the awards ceremony or within 30 days after the date of the Awards Ceremony. 5
PUBLIC VOTING Three (3) categories will be voted for by the public only. The Viewer’s Choice categories are not open for entry; nominees selected will be chosen from the final nominee list. The public will vote for the Viewer’s Choice categories via SMS/USSD. Public Voting opens on the 1st of September 2021 the day that nominees are announced and will close on the 14th of September 2021. RIGHTS & CLEARANCES 1. All nominees hereby waive any claim of whatsoever nature, which they may have against the sponsors, Indonsa Productions and/or the Royalty Soapie Awards arising out of, or in connection with, their participation in this competition and will ensure that the nominees will do the same. 2. Indonsa Productions and the Royalty Soapie Awards shall not be liable to a nominee for any reason whatsoever, whether in contract or otherwise arising out of, or in connection with, the 5th Royalty Soapie Awards. The nominees hereby fully and effectually indemnify the sponsors, RSA, and their successors, assigns, licensees and each of their officers, directors, employees, and agents and hold them harmless from and against all claims, liabilities, judgments, losses, damages, costs, and expenses (including reasonable legal expenses), directly or indirectly, due to any breach of these rules by the entrant. This indemnity shall survive the completion of the Awards. 3. By submitting a fully completed nomination form to the 5th Royalty Soapie Awards the entrant agrees to abide by the rules as stated in this document. 4. All decisions with respect to the acceptance of any nominee and eligibility of nomination are made by RSA and shall be final and binding upon all entrants. In the event of any dispute, RSA's decision shall be binding on the entrant and no correspondence will be entered. 5. All materials submitted become the property of RSA and will not be returned to the entrant. RSA shall not be responsible for late, lost, damaged, misdirected, stolen or misappropriated entries. 6. RSA may, without the entrant's further consent, use the entrant's name, and the name, likeness, biography, and photographs of its nominees owned or controlled by the entrant ("contribution materials") without charge, in exploiting, advertising, and publicising the competition in all media and formats throughout the universe. 7. The entrant hereby represents, warrants, and undertakes to RSA that the entrant is entitled to enter the competition and has full power and authority to grant rights herein expressed to be granted. 8. The entrant shall not, without the prior written consent of Indonsa Productions and the Royalty Soapie Awards (except as required by law) at any time hereafter, either personally or by means of media or publicity or advertising agents or agencies, divulge or disclose any information of any nature or kind relating to the development or production of the competition to any person, relating to any matter arising hereunder or to the general affairs of the RSA, coming within the entrant’s knowledge by reason of this competition or otherwise howsoever. 9. Notwithstanding and irrespective of any advertisement or announcement which may have been or may hereafter be published, RSA shall not be liable to the entrant for, or in respect of, any loss of publicity, advertisement, reputation or the like due to the entrant's non-appearance in the competition and/or RSA's failure to produce, advertise, promote or exploit the competition, and nothing contained herein shall be construed so as to impose upon RSA any obligation to make use of the services of the entrant, or to permit the entrant to play any part in the making of the competition, or to produce, advertise, promote (or to continue the production, advertising, promotion or exploitation) of the competition. 10. Once nominations have been submitted, only the nominating body can withdraw the nomination. The request to withdraw an entry must be made in writing and received by RSA no later than 7 days after the closing date of the entry period. 11. RSA reserves the right to withdraw a nomination or an RSA statuette from any nominee or winner, who in RSA's sole discretion, has brought the RSA into disrepute. 6
12. All productions that go through to the final judging phase grant RSA the use of video clips up to a total sum of 3 minutes of the production for the purposes of publicity and the promotion of the RSA and agree to use the phrase “The show is nominated for the 5th Royalty Soapie Awards”. As custodians of the awards, we will ensure strict use of any footage for promotional purposes only. By submitting an entry form, the entrant has agreed to the use of materials for the RSA. HOW TO SUBMIT NOMINATIONS Entry forms must be completed in full, and the link can be found on the Royalty Soapie Awards website www.royaltysa.com Step 1 – Straight Forward Registration Production House to register details of relevant contact person handling all entries submission for their program. Step 2 – Categories Entry Submission Submit entries in multiple category groups Upload supporting documents, videos, and audio Step 3 – Submit Entry Save entries as draft, and come back later to complete them, when they’re ready submit your entry. No changes can be made to entries once they have been finalized and submitted. WHAT NEEDS TO BE INCLUDED ON AN ENTRY FORM? The following information is considered Essential Entry Information. It is REQUIRED for each entry unless specified: o Category o Program Name o Episode References o Airdates o Broadcaster Channel Name o Entrant/team details (Birth Name & Surname & Contact Details) o Character Name (for actor role categories) o Submission Video (up to 2 full episodes / 1 showreel, subject to category requirements) o Photograph of entrant/team o Screen Credits o Script (for Outstanding Writing Team category) o Motivation / statement letter(s) (for specific categories) o Production Audio Intro Song (sound bite – only required once) o Production logo (only required once) O ENTRANT DETAILS Please ensure you enter team members in the order you wish them to be displayed for each technical or creative categories, for actor role categories please ensure you complete the name the actor is known as publicly (stage name). Credit lists will NOT be alphabetized by our organisers. These spellings and titles as submitted will appear on press releases, invitations, TV broadcast, social media platforms and the statue (if you win). Correct nomination information is the responsibility of the submitting company. The RSA is not liable for incorrect ballot listings that are the result of incorrect information on the nomination forms. O SUBMISSION VIDEO UPLOAD Every single submission requires a up to 2 video uploads with exceptions to the Lifetime Achievement Award, all three Viewer’s Choice categories, Highest Ratings categories. Refer to the by-category listing for specific requirements such as full episode, clip reel or multiple videos. Video format: MP4 or .MOV 7
All video files need to be clearly labeled with the show name, category group & episode numbers. Some categories require showreel videos, and some categories require full episodes. DO NOT include bars and tones. DELETE intervals/commercials and pull blacks down to 2-3 seconds. For showreels, we allow for clips from any episodes within the eligibility period. You will be asked to list the airdates of ALL episodes used in your showreel. Showreels must NOT be sizzle reels. The same video file can be uploaded across categories provided they have the same video requirements. Where the same video file is used for multiple categories, the entrant can clone a category form containing the video that is to be used for other categories, the entrant will be able to change the entry details and assign the relevant new category to the cloned form leaving the video upload as it was uploaded on the original form. You may also choose to upload separate videos for each category, depending on the video requirements and what aspects you want your submission to showcase. It is the responsibility of the entrant to ensure that all videos uploaded are correctly formatted. Only episodes that have been broadcast and released withing the broadcast period 1 July 2020 – 30 June 2021 are eligible for entry. O PHOTOGRAPH / LOGO UPLOAD For the Technical, Creative and Special categories – you must upload a hi-res image of your show logo. You are only required to upload this once during your entries process. For all Actor role categories – you must upload a hi-res photo of your talent. The RSA organisers reserve the right to use these photos for production, broadcast and on production specific media platforms. Format: 300dpi .JPG or .PNG O PERFORMER BIOGRAPHY UPLOAD For Actor role categories – a short biography/synopsis of the character/performer For Lifetime Achievement – detailing achievements, works, years in the industry, etc. Format: PDF O AUDIO UPLOAD You must upload your shows intro song for the purpose of the awards ceremony walk-up music. You are only required to upload this once during your entries process. Format: MP3 O SCREEN CREDITS The screen credit list is required showing the names and designations/character name of all eligible team members and/actors that have been entered into the 5th Royalty Soapie Awards, please ensure the document is clearly named with the showname_screen credits. You are only required to upload this once during your entries process. Eligibility is based on screen credit. Producers and broadcasters may not alter an individual’s screen credit to qualify the individual for a Royalty Soapie Award. Format: PDF O SCRIPT The script will be required for the Outstanding Writing Team category. Only PDF documents will be accepted, please ensure the document is clearly named with the ‘showname_writingteam_episode number’ Format: PDF 8
AWARDS CATEGORIES DESCRIPTION & CRITERIA 1. LEAD ROLES Video submission requirements for the following categories 1.A – 1.D: o Submit a showreel can be up to 15 minutes in total running time o Showreel may consist of any clips from any episodes from the eligibility broadcast period o Nominated performer must be clearly visible in all scenes o No internal editing or enhancement of the original content is permitted o Provide 2-3 seconds of black between scenes o State “End of Showreel” at the end of the submission Other Requirements: o Performer Photograph(s): 300dpi JPEG or PNG o Character Bio/Synopsis: PDF A. OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR Awarded to the lead actor for a continuing performance in a daily TV drama program (soapie/telenovela) who has portrayed the character with the largest role in the production piece. This award is for the outstanding male lead with the best consistent performance, interpretation, and realisation of the scripted character. This category will be judged on the excellent individual performance skills with the effective use of the craft of acting appropriate to the role/character. B. OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS Awarded to the lead actress for a continuing performance in a daily TV drama program (soapie/telenovela) who has portrayed the character with the largest role in the production piece. This award is for the outstanding female lead with the best consistent performance, interpretation, and realisation of the scripted character. This category will be judged on the excellent individual performance skills with the effective use of the craft of acting appropriate to the role/character. C. OUTSTANDING MALE VILLAIN Awarded to the actor for a continuing performance in a daily TV drama program (soapie/telenovela) who has delivered an outstanding performance as the antagonist “evil” role in the production piece. This award is for the outstanding male villain with the best consistent performance, interpretation, and realisation of the scripted character. This category will be judged on the excellent individual performance skills with the effective use of the craft of acting appropriate to the role/character. 9
D. OUTSTANDING FEMALE VILLAIN Awarded to the actor for a continuing performance in a daily TV drama program (soapie/telenovela) who has delivered an outstanding performance as the antagonist “evil” role in the production piece. This award is for the outstanding female villain with the best consistent performance, interpretation, and realisation of the scripted character. This category will be judged on the excellent individual performance skills with the effective use of the craft of acting appropriate to the role/character. E. OUTSTANDING DAILY TV DRAMA Awarded to the outstanding daily TV drama program (soapie/telenovela) in which the ongoing theme, storyline and ensemble cast are presented under the same title with impressive television ratings/viewership numbers. All daily TV dramas (soapie/telenovela) are eligible for entry and must demonstrate compelling storytelling, casting, characters, scriptwriting, direction, with an overall high-level production and entertainment value. The award goes to the producer(s) whose specific screen credit is Executive Producer, Co- Executive Producer, Supervising Producer, Producer or Produced by, and whose functions support those credits. This category will be judged on the excellence in overall production execution, value, and viewership ratings. This category is judged by the RSA appointed judging panel and is not open for public vote, the viewership ratings will be provided by Nielsen for the judge’s consideration. OUTSTANDING ONSCREEN COUPLE Awarded to the best onscreen couple in a daily TV drama program (soapie/telenovela) who have delivered an outstanding chemistry performance, where the dialogue flows smoothly between the two actors and the energy of both dialogues match up. The actors will be judged on interpretation and realisation of the scripted characters, their comfort around one another and the physical component of the relationship seems natural. D. OUTSTANDING NEWCOMER Awarded to a performer in a daily TV drama program (soapie/telenovela for his/her first acting role who has delivered a breakthrough performance with the best consistent performance, interpretation, and realisation of a scripted character. The performer may have been in the television industry for one year but less than two years. This category will be judged on the excellent individual performance skills with the effective use of the craft of acting appropriate to the role/character. E. OUTSTANDING YOUNG PERFORMER Awarded to the outstanding non-gendered performer age 18 years or younger with a lead, supporting or guest performance in a daily TV drama program (soapie/telenovela) who have demonstrably excelled in the field of acting with the best consistent performance, interpretation, and realisation of a scripted character. This category will be judged on the excellent individual performance skills with the effective use of the craft of acting appropriate to the role/character. 3. CREATIVE AWARDS A. OUTSTANDING MAKEUP & HAIR STYLING Awarded for the outstanding achievement in makeup & hairstyling in a daily TV drama (soapie/telenovela), this category is awarded to the lead makeup artist and hairstylist of the serial. This category will be judged on an original, imaginative, and unified design that reveals a strong vision that enhances and supports the characters and the theme from the production as evident from the directional vision. Definitions: Makeup – Makeup is any change in the appearance of an actor’s face or body created by the application of cosmetics, three-dimensional material, facial hair, and/or prosthetic appliances applied directly to the actor’s face or body using an appropriate adhesive. A Prosthetic is any 3-dimensional appliance, including transfers, that have been prepared in advance from a mold and applied to the actor to change his/her appearance and/or give character to the makeup. It could be as small as a scar or wound, or as large as a full facial piece and/or body parts. 11
Hairstyling – Hairstyling is any change in the appearance of an actor’s hair by the act of styling, designing, cutting, colour, as well as the preparation and application of hairpieces or wigs to create a character. OUTSTANDING CINEMATORGAPHY Awarded to the cinematography team for a daily TV drama program (telenovela) shot in the field single camera or multiple camera style for the outstanding work done involving techniques in lighting, cameras, and the integration of any special effects. Recognising the many talents, love, and passion an individual from the television industry has shown throughout his/her career. The dedication to the industry and the inspiration has established a benchmark for others to look up too. 14
The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises an actor, director, producer, the technical or creative member of the television industry. The recipient gets decided by the members of the Royalty Soapie Awards executive committee. Recommendations from production houses are to be submitted online during the entries period, accompanied by a letter of motivation. The nominee is to have a minimum of 20 years of documented accomplishments in daily TV drama programs and must have contributed significantly throughout his/her career to the development, upliftment, and advancement of the television industry.
