HISTORY AND TRADITIONS OF DRAGON BOATING A dragon boat is a human powered watercraft. Traditionally crafted out of teak in the Pearl River Delta region of China’s southern Guangdong Province today boats are made from lightweight carbon fibre with racing in mind. Modern day dragon boating is a truly competitive sport with teams competing up to World Championship level. Over 50 million paddlers participate annually in competitions across the globe and Australia competes strongly on the international stage. Dragon Boat has rich cultural origins, being deeply imbedded in China’s “Dragon” Culture. That’s why when we race, each boat is dressed with an ornately carved dragon’s head at the bow and a tail at the stern. The boat is painted with scales and to complete the picture, the paddles symbolically represent the dragon’s claws. Originally, more than 2000 years ago, Dragon Boat was used for religious purposes as a way to appease the rain gods with a group of superstitious people believing the boat racing would ensure prosperous and bountiful crops. Later Dragon Boat celebrated the life of Qu Yuan, a great warrior poet, who committed suicide in the river Mi Lo, as a protest against political corruption of the day. STATE BY STATE According to legend, when news of Qu Yuan’s drowning became known, boats were launched by the local fishermen in a race to be first to recover Qu Yuan’s body. Thus dragon boat racing was born. The furious splashing of paddles and banging of drums used these days to get the crews in time has its origin in the fishermen’s bid to scare off fish and other river creatures from defiling his body. To commemorate his sacrifice, the people began to organise dragon boat festivals in his memory. The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated every year on the 5th day of the 5th Moon (month) of the Chinese lunar calendar. Some original rituals continue to be practiced today such as the “Awakening of the Dragon” by dotting the eyes of the dragon’s head on each boat with red paint. This ceremony awakens and gives sight to the dragons. It will also cleanse and bless the area of the competition, the competitors and their boats and gives the boats and their crews the strength of the Dragon and the blessing of the Goddess of the Sea Thankfully some other traditional rituals are no longer performed such as the crowd throwing stones at the rival boats and it is no longer imperative that a boat capsize and at least one person drowns – this was once considered a special sacrifice to the gods and was, surprisingly, a sign of good luck! 15 The Naturally refreshing Sunshine Coast official destination partner for the event The Naturally refreshing Sunshine Coast official destination partner for the event 16
